Nice resource for fans of Scandinavian glass
I recently had to help my family price out their collection of Scandinavian glass and pottery for insurance purposes. My parents collected many items from Sweden and Denmark from the 1960s and beyond but could not always remember where they bought a particular items. This book was an ENORMOUS help. I was able to find at least half a dozen pieces that we owned and determined reasonable values for quite a few more.

I also purchased the 'Smoke and Ice' book by the same authors. The difference is 'Smoke and Ice' deals mostly with clear, lightly colored, etched or similar styles of glass while the 'Fire and Sea' book deals more with colored glass. Both are excellent and have beautiful pictures. I just wish they had released a book on pottery too.

Scandinavian Design at its best
The Schiffer publications know more about glass and ceramics in Scandinavia than the Scandinavians know themselves. High class pictures, almost photographic art, very reliable references. Kilnforming 101...and then some
In this case, you CAN judge a book by its cover--A Beginner's Guide to Kilnformed Glass is a well-illustrated journey through the first year of serious kilnforming. Well-written and thoughtfully organized, it provides clear explanations of the tools, equipment, studio and materials you'll need to get started "fusing" glass. It moves through explaining basic techniques like glasscutting, layup (assembling glass or frit so that it will fuse into your design), firing and coldworking (shaping and polishing the fired piece). Don't be tempted to skip these chapters; I've been working glass for 15 years but even so, I found a few new ideas I could use in the studio. The author is a teacher, production glassmaker and artist who obviously knows her stuff (disclaimer: I've met her at several glassmaking functions so I knew she was good BEFORE I got the book).

And then the fun starts. Where many books offer simple beginner's projects that LOOK like simple beginner's projects, the projects in this book produce sophisticated and often beautiful pieces of glass. The techniques required are relatively easy to master even if you don't have much experience with glass, and there's a point to them, i.e., one project helps you understand precision cutting, another what happens when you overfire thin glass, and yet another introduces making components for larger assemblies. There are the usual drapes, plates and potmelts too, but they're well-presented. The author includes templates for each project, but clearly encourages you to use them as a starting point for your own designs. (I'm making a note to myself to try that three-tiered water fountain; it looks cool)

I do have a minor, minor quibble: This book is a good in-studio reference, especially while you're working on a project, but it's hard-bound and the pages have trouble staying flat; if there's a second printing a spiral-bound might be useful.

i have made fused and slumped glas for 15 years, but there was still something for me to learn.......... a super bok for beginners, you will get many of the tips, you otherwise will learn by dooing........

Perfection

I wish that I had begun my glass work with this book at my fingertips.Not only is the layout attractive and clear, but the topics are covered in a clear and logical manner.Her projects are imaginative, with a stretch for true beginners, but they lend themselves to application of techniques and the user's creativity.This should be in every fuser's library!

Excellent illustration and information!
I have not bought my kiln as of yet, but this book has given me a great deal of instruction for "how to" and I can't wait to try the projects out!Love the illustrations and project ideas.Most of the projects look fairly to somewhat simple to do....excellent beginner's book.

Amazing!
This book is great for any fan of Chihuly's work, or just anyone who enjoys beautiful art.Not only are Chihuly's works extremely aesthetically pleasing, but they are enchanting and inspirational.

Inspiring for future glass artists
Purchased as a gift for a beginning glass artist, the book is inspiring and beautifully done.It is a great reminder of the exhibits that we have seen.

I admit it:This book has won me over.
This bookwas produced in conjunction with a series of Florida exhibitions in 1993.This book, filled with dozens and dozens of Full Color and full page reproductions in approx. 142 pps., really lays it out for the viewer in a way that, if you were either unfamiliar with or indifferent to Dale Chihuly's work, will make you a convert.Really.I fall into the latter category perhaps because, as the world famous art dealer Henry Geldzahler puts it in the foreward of this book " Chihuly's work is American in its apparent vulgarity, it brazenness and its fearlessness to move farther out west even if there is no further west to move to."
However, when one goes through the varous glass genres that the artist creates, Baskets, Sea Forms, Persians, Venetians, Ikebana, Niijima Floats and Macchia, among others, one begins to appreciate the sheer power and artistry that gets expressed in Chihuly's florid craft.The publishers might have botched the operation if they had cheaped out on the book's production values, fortunately they did not and this 'Made In USA' book can takes its place among any other of your expensive, high-end coffee table (folio sized) art books.As the reviewer states below, there isn't a lot of text here, just an introductory paragraph or two from the artist before each themed chapter but really, the art work says more than enough.I can heartily recommend this book even if you do not collect glass work, and even if you haven't yet cottoned on to Mr. Chihuly's work.

Chihuly is incredible.
Not much in the way of descriptions, just a brief introduction to each series (Macchia's, Persians, etc.), which I found just enough.What I'm interested in are the actual pieces, and there are plenty of exceptional pictures.

Having recently returned from Venice, I wish I had this book before I left. Mr. Gable's meticulously researched volume offers so much valuable information, any glass collector or any tourist interested in a deeper perspective of the glass art of the city should read this book. The author's grasp of the nuances of the various styles is masterful and gave me a whole new appreciation of the experience I had in Venice.

flashy but ignorant book


Nice pictures and easy layout attract beginners (like myself), but about 30% of patterns do not quite correspond to the descriptions and incorrect. Historical facts are awfully wrong throughout the book.
How could the authors release this book? And why was it reprinted without corrections?

Like most people, this book is imperfect but necessary:
Would that it were otherwise! The fact is, no other commonly available reference is as handy and easy to use; and while the pictures leave much to be desired, this book has more useful color pictures than any other.It has helped me become familiar with the most common EAPG patterns, but since I know it's full of mistakes I don't accept its information uncritically. I wish the authors would clean up their many sloppy errors in future editions, even as I look forward to the book's expansion.This book is helpful, but I use mine alongside McCain's vastly more authoritative, reliable work.

A good source for identifying early pattern glass
Some of the reviews of this book surprise me. I have seen similar negative comments written about these authors on separate web sites, and no doubt the comments here are by the same people. My experience with this book is this....the main appeal to this book is that there are literally hundreds and hundreds of patterns identified, and by using the photos in this book, I've been able to identify pieces in my collection that I previously could not. Certainly I wish there was more information and detail written about each pattern...this book lists maybe a line or two about each pattern only, with no to few comments about reproductions. So, I use this book in conjunction with other pattern glass books (Reilly and Jenks, Warman's, etc) to get the most comprehensive picture I can.Some of the pictures are not super clear. Compared to other books which don't list many patterns at all and then do so in black and white or hand drawing, I'll live with it. I would imagine photographing the detail on clear glass isn't easy! I guess I'll summarize by saying that while the book is not perfect, it certainly takes a good stab at trying to organize information and photos of hundreds of pieces of glass from the turn of the century. Are there errors? Probably! But with all the fires in these glass companies over the years I am sure no one has the truth about everything.

A beautiful book, but lacking!
Suppose you do not know much about glass.You probably won't know a whole lot more when you've looked at this book.Some of the pictures do not show the pattern.There are numerous ones, ie.; caprice, chestnut oak, star & thumprint, etc. that are taken at poor angles, or poor lighting or whatever and are just indisctinct.I was looking for a pattern on Cathedral and that is shown on a bowl that has the pattern going underneath.No way can you see what the entire pattern looks like.In the front of the book, they describe the shapes of the glassware.They list 20 shapes, but in the price guide, they list many more.What is the difference between a milk pitcher and a pitcher?a tumbler and a goblet?What size and shape is a sauce?What is a wastebowl?They never show or describe the bottom pattern.No explanation is given as to whether this is important, distinct or has no effect whatsover.I have no more knowledge of the patterns on my glass than I did before. ... Not helpful
I bought this book to help me sort through my parents and grandparents glassware that I inherited. Out of 10 boxes of glassware, only ONE item was in this book. I guess I should have read the description better - it is just for one brand of glassware, and I have many to sort through.

What am I missing?
Apparently, a lot. This book makes me want to go out and buy a different one on the same subject. I can't seem to find anything in it that is useful. Either they left a lot out, or I am just looking in the wrong book. I see things on Ebay all the time that one would think would be in here but they are not. I've only identified one pattern so far. There are no toothpick holders or salt cellars. I'm more confused now than before. The pictures are dull and boring. I think a Field Guide in general is a bad idea because the size of the photos is so small. Sticking to the large books would have been better.

Don't Rely on These Values
This book is a fantastic take-along for going to antique stores and garage sales and the like.It contains several helpful sections to help you identify patterns including a catagorized section of borders (birds, floral, art deco, etc.) and a shape guide which is primarily useful when looking for plates and serving pieces.All of the photos of actual pieces are in color.This book also contains several patterns that Gene Florence's Collector's Encyclopedia of Depression Glass does not.

One thing about this book that needs to be mentioned is the large discrepency in value for many pieces between the Warman's guide and Florence's guide.I don't know if this is because this edition is already 3 years old or what.You may feel like you are getting an incredible deal when you are actually not.This book also doesn't contain much information on each pattern except for the basics and it doesn't have much good information on reproductions.

A welcome addition to my library on glass.
Having enjoyed other John Sandon books, I took a chance on ordering this one. I have books focusing on etched glass so I was looking for enameled, Bohemian, multi-colored, stemware, gilded, and painted pieces. This book has that and more. Some photos show several pieces from the same maker, style, or era. Heavy shiny photographic paper is used. It is not a large book but it has good sized, distinct photos with the details so you can enjoy turning the pages. I had viewed Miller's Collecting Glass and 20th Century Glass from the library. All three cover similar glass but the authors' choice for what to show as examples differs. 20th Century Glass was too limited for me but I liked the book. I ended up buying this book and Miller's Collecting Glass. They gave me a wonderful reference set with many examples from the same maker, style, or era. There are lots of differences between the books so I can not say that one is better than the other. Both describe the various styles and history of glass manufacture. Each author offers tips on buying antique glass and pricing. It would have helped if Amazon's Look Inside feature were available for both so that a person searching for something specific could decide if one book is more appropriate. If you are looking for a glass cross section these two books cover it all.

interesting, if you are from Europe
I found this book to be interesting regarding the history of glass and full of great photos, but a bit irrelevant unless you live in Europe or have access to old European glass.If I travel to Europe, I will find the book helpful as a resource.

This book has enough pictures that you would easily be able to locate pattern , although there is no full history as in the bigger book vs. the pocket guide , this is an excellent reference for starters, the back of the book has 12 pages of reproductions and how to tell them apart , the new photo legends helps as in you no longer have to guess is that the waste bowl or the cereal bowl , i would highly recommend this book small enough for travel and to kep near the computer so you can make an informed decision on what piece to buy

thick and dark
I bought this for someone who has enjoyed colouring mandalas. The designs are great but sometimes there is so much black around the design it is distracting and the lines are so close together in some of the patterns, the colour does not shine through. You also have to use felt tip markers to make the design look good - that uses a lot of felt tips. The background of the transparent areas is a light gray so that also mutes any colouring done. ... I really enjoyed the step by step tutorials with pictures in this book, as well as the way they took you from simple beginner's skills to more advanced concepts with ease.I was pleased to be one of the contributors to the book where so many other fine designers and lampwork artists were featured.There were definitely some fine ideas and technics for including in my future projects.If you're considering taking up jewelry design as a hobby, the tutorials are a good place to start for the fundamentals, and if you're already a jewelry designer you'll find some beautiful eye candy and thoughtful ideas for growing your skills.Don't try to copy exactly--but let the book get your creative juices flowing, while giving you the design and technical skills to make it work!Thanks Karen for giving us a practical and lovely book on the how-to's of jewelry design with the artisan art beads we all love so much.

Full of inspiration
As a glass beadmaker myself, I'm always searching for new and interesting ways to incorporate my beads into finished jewelry, and I found a lot of inspiration in this book!With designs for both the beginning and advanced beader, there's something here for any skill level.The layout of the book and the seasonal theme were especially well thought out, and the photography is absolutely stunning!Whether the reader attempts to recreate any of the pieces in the book or not, there's enough eye candy here to keep you inspired year round.

Beautiful designs-something for everyone!
I am a contributor to this lovely book.I was honored to be asked by the author to submit one of one ndebele necklaces.It was a challenge for me because I have never done anything like this before, but it was fun and I learned so much.This book is about integrating lampwork beads into designs.Lampwork beads are readily available on the internet and add such depth to any piece.I have been designing for several years now use lampwork beads in all of my pieces.I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn to make jewelry, especially to those who enjoy unique looks-one of a kind pieces.

The book was in excellent condition. It has many beautiful designs. It may be hard to find the beads or similar to do these creations but very good ideas.

Pretty jewelry, but no how-to for the lampwork art beads
While I thought the jewelry was attractive for the most part, I was *very* disappointed that there were no instructions for how to make the lampwork Art Beads USED for the "art bead jewelry."(I also own Leonardo's "Creating Lampwork Beads for Jewelry," but I did not find many beads or the jewelry very inspiring or interesting to re-create from that book.)"Art Bead Jewelry" has far more interesting lampwork beads for creating jewelry with, but no instructions.

It would have been *much better* if this book showed us how to make the lampwork art beads for use in the sets, especially since a lot of the beads used in the pictured jewelry are not "generic" styles found just anywhere.Some of the lampwork beads are a particular style for the piece and it would have been nice to know make your own lampwork bead.Given that the author knows how to instruct for lampwork, it should not have been difficult to show how they were made.Too bad; maybe next time.

8/3 ADDENDUM:To be fair, in re-reading the intent of this book, the Amazon Product Description does state that it is ... "how to incorporate [lampwork beads] into interesting and unique jewelry designs. Rather than concentrate on making the beads themselves, author Karen Leonardo focuses on making jewelry from finished lampwork beads."Also, the lampwork beads used are not necessarily Leonardo's but other jewelry designers. Still, my attention was drawn to the lampwork beads, which are the focus of the jewelry.So, while I would add another star, I would still have liked to learn how to make the unique and attractive lampwork beads. ... Good Glass information
This book is a good "starter" book for anyone interested in Art Glass.It gives you a great starting point for learning about Art Glass.

I guess I'm a little disappointed.
Definitely some great pieces of glass in this book. However, I found the printing of the images rather dark and sometimes lacking clarity....the pictures are a little fuzzy or out of focus on some pages.Some pages were much better than others for photo detail.In addition, there was a large section devoted to pictures of stained glass catalogs and glass factory postcards that I didn't find particularly useful...I guess I'm a little disappointed in the book overall, despite it still being a good reference for American art glass.

Review of American Art Glass
This is an excellent piece of work. It will be of much interest to any serious collector of American glass. The photographs are very good, the historical perspective is to be commended, and the pricing of pieces seems to be well researched. Of course, the focus is on high end items and categories of glass so that it is not a stand alone reference for all "art glass" produced in the United States. Nor should it be. It is a fine book to be part of a collector's resources on the subject.

A 'must' for any serious collector.
The second updated edition of Collector's Encyclopedia of American Art Glass is a winner: it packs in full pages of color photos on each and every page, pairs these with written descriptions, and includes the latest updated values. Pieces come from a range of collections, so they aren't limited by collection or ownership, and glass examples were chosen with readers' interests in mind. From glassmaking tools and their history to logos and design insights, this is an outstanding survey and a 'must' for any serious collector.

Great book
I am studying glass blowing for my BFA and from the first time I saw Dante's work he became my idol.This book is a very fast read and shows so much of his work but more importantly it explains what his work is all about.Any one interested in glass, especially anyone working glass needs to at least read this book, if it doesn't inspire you then there has got to be something wrong with you.

Excellent!
This book is an excellent example for the beginning glass bead maker. It demonstrates then shows examples of each procedure the author describes. As a beginner,bead making can be intimidating. This book breaks the steps down in layman terms to demystify the process. I loved the bead examples from other artists at the end of the book.The step by step photography are clear and straight forward.I highly recommend this book!

Great instructional book
I really like the fact that this book explained many intermediate, glass working techniques with beautiful photos and well written instructions.

Glass Bead Workshop
This book covers more advanced bead making, e.g. hollow beads, off mandrel, sandblasting.Beautifully presented with lots of step by step photos.Really pleased I bought it.

Not for beginners
This book is not for beginners or novice lampworkers.The instructions are fairly clear, pictures are good.In order to make the beads represented, you need to have a fully equipped studio and other fairly expensive equipment like a sandblaster.The book is for the more experienced and serious lampworker, not the occasional hobbyist.
