From the supplier: Controversies continue to hound the calculation and uses of the Consumer Price Index (CPI), the most well-known inflation indicator in the country. The CPI is blamed for overstating inflation rate, resulting in a federal deficit and prompting Federal Reserve Board Chmn. Alan Greenspan to suggest to lower it by one percentage point. Speaker Newt Gingrich agreed with the idea, but some Democratic senators denounced political pressure concerning the CPI and called for careful study. The dispute offers two lessons, namely, that there is no 'perfect' index and that politics should be kept out of good statistics.

Excellent source!
Encompassing close to a thousand pages, Mickolus' latest chronology and bibliography stands as an important contribution to the ever prevalent empirical research on oppositional political terrorism. The book, building on the author's previous three chronologies and two bibliographies, is divided into four sections. It begins with a brief four page introduction which characterizes the research effort as documentary rather than analytical. Unlike previous volumes, Mickolus' introduction avoids a discussion of simple aggregates, and provides a brief explanation of the amount of attention (measured in bytes) his chronology devotes to individual terrorist eventsbased on months and years.

The introduction is followed by "Updates of 1960-1987 events," which occupies approximately ten percent of the volume. To his credit, Mickolus recognizes that with time new information on old terrorist incidents, which he previously chronicled, accrues and includes this in his new book. On the heals of the updates section is the listing of the 1988-1991 incidents, occupying close to seventy-five percent of the book. In this section, individual events are described in more detail than Mickolus' previous compilations. While the majority of incidents are international in origin, he provides a number of domestic events that help place the international incidents in context.

Finally, the author concludes the book with a comprehensive selectively annotated bibliography, occupying almost eight percent of the total book, which focuses on recent literature on terrorism which is subdivided into six general classifications with a total of fifteen subdivisions.

While the length and cost of the chronology and bibliography would be increased, the events section could have benefited from some summary statistics similar to the one the author used in previous compilations. An index to the incidents as was included in previous editions, and may have been useful here as well. An index of this type makes it easier to access particular events in certain countries or committed by particular terrorist organizations. An inevitable consequence of any comprehensive effort, such as this one, is that the volume is quite pricey, retailing at ...which makes it out of the range of private researchers and places it squarely in the domain of library acquisitions.

In sum, the book is extremely helpful to researchers and policy-makers conducting empirical research on oppositional political terrorism. It is also useful to those researchers trying to understand the incidents that took place during the Gulf War. ... Read more
