As a parent who takes an interest in my childrens' textbooks, I must say that this book is one of the dryest I've read.Though the book contains a lot of useful information, it leaves plenty of room for improvement in delivering more stimulating messages in plain and simple english.

5-0 out of 5 stars Traces recent military-political Israeli history with especial focus on the 1990's and beyond
Generals In The Cabinet Room: How The Military Shapes Israeli Policy by Yoram Peri (Professor of Political Sociology And Communication at Tel Aviv University) forcefully and persuasively argues the premise that while once Israel's military was the servant of its civilian political leadership, today it is the Israeli generals who have the lead in foreign and defense policymaking. The repercussions for Israeli--Palestinian relations, Israeli democracy, and other democracies are potentially earthshaking. Generals In The Cabinet Room traces recent military-political Israeli history with especial focus on the 1990's and beyond, and warns of a future in which democracy itself could potentially fall victim to too much militarization. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading on today's Middle East
Anyone seeking explanations for Israel's hasty and ill-considered decision to go to war against Hezbollah in Lebanon in July 2006 should begin with this outstanding book -- published just before the conflict -- as background.Yoram Peri is Israel's leading authority on civil-military relations. He writes presciently about the risks of allowing the military to monopolize Israel's intelligence apparatus, inviting generals into cabinet meetings to formulate policy, giving senior officers unlimited freedom to make media appearances, and encouraging a revolving door for ex-generals who retire to become politicians.

Peri convincingly analyzes the shifts in Israeli policies since the late 1980's as a reflection of the military leadership's changing perceptions of the country's security needs. His approach is subtle, recognizing that the generals first supported and advanced the Oslo peace process during the early 1990's before abandoning hope for peace with the Palestinians by the end of the decade. In each phase the views of the active and retired senior officers deeply influenced Israel's policy choices.

Peri concludes with a series of recommendations for reform, which, had they been in place when Hezbollah kidnapped two Israeli soldiers, might well have produced a range of viable policy alternatives for the civilian leaders, sparing the elected government from adopting the generals' recommendation to launch a poorly-designed military campaign in Lebanon.

The book is clearly written and is solidly based on interviews with numerous high-level officials. This is a worthy sequel to Peri's earlier book, Between Battles and Ballots, showing that state control over the military has been weak since Israel's founding. Peri's important work holds cautionary lessons for all democracies, including the U.S. since 9/11, that struggle against terrorists and seek to make the most of their militaries without giving them control over national policy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to American politics
I had to buy this book as a textbook for an intro American government class, and it's one of the books I decided not to sell after the end of the semester. It gives a basic rundown of all the branches of government, and incorporates recent U.S. history to further explain theories. (Using President Bush and the Iraq War to explain the powers of the president was a highlight.) Best of all, it's in a language that the everyday American can understand - even those who never went to college.

I'd recommend this to everyone who forgot what they learned in high school civics, right in the same breath as the "For Dummies" line of books.

Product Description

Political conservatives have long believed that the best government is a small government. But if this were true, noted economist Jeff Madrick argues, the nation would not be experiencing stagnant wages, rising health care costs, increasing unemployment, and concentrations of wealth for a narrow elite. In this perceptive and eye-opening book, Madrick proves that an engaged government--a big government of high taxes and wise regulations--is necessary for the social and economic answers that Americans desperately need in changing times. He shows that the big governments of past eras fostered greatness and prosperity, while weak, laissez-faire governments marked periods of corruption and exploitation. The Case for Big Government considers whether the government can adjust its current policies and set the country right.

Madrick explains why politics and economics should go hand in hand; why America benefits when the government actively nourishes economic growth; and why America must reject free market orthodoxy and adopt ambitious government-centered programs. He looks critically at today's politicians--at Republicans seeking to revive nineteenth-century principles, and at Democrats who are abandoning the pioneering efforts of the Great Society. Madrick paints a devastating portrait of the nation's declining social opportunities and how the economy has failed its workers. He demonstrates that the government must correct itself to address these serious issues.

A practical call to arms, The Case for Big Government asks for innovation, experimentation, and a willingness to fail. The book sets aside ideology and proposes bold steps to ensure the nation's vitality.

1-0 out of 5 stars Socialist Trash...
Yet another screed against free markets. It's too bad that the average rant of this variety neglects that we haven't had free markets for a very long time. What could be more important to a so-called "free market" than the price of money? In order for a free market to exist, interest rates would need to float freely, not be set by the Fed. The Fed "sets" (translation: rigs) interest rates which causes economic dislocations and malinvestment. What we've had is crony capitalism and rigged markets for large corporations and the Federal Reserve Banks. Government isn't the solution - individuals need to keep what they earn so that they don't need to borrow money and be played by banks and vote-buying politicians.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a "Liberal" Rant
I have recently read Henry Hazlitt's "Economics in One Lesson."In that book, Hazlitt argued that government intervention in the economy is disastrous and will be the eventual cause to our downfall.I did not wholly agree with Hazlitt. Therefore, I hoped that "The Case for Big Government" would refute Hazlitt.I was pleased to find that it did.

Madrick contends that for some reason the public believes there used to be a period in American history where a truly laissez faire economy existed without the intervention of the federal government.Madrick states this is simply not true. The public has forgotten how the federal government was responsible for the selling of land in the 1800s, Jefferson's purchase of Louisiana, the implementation of tariffs to protect domestic manufacturing, subsidies for the development of railroads, laws enacted to protect civil rights, etc. Those events only occurred in the 19th century though. Many more took place during the 20th and 21st centuries.

Besides the brief history lesson, Madrick provides specific evidence of how government involvement does not curtail economic expansion. One quick example includes the income tax.Madrick writes that in 1913 the income tax was two percent of GDP.In 1942, it rose to 15 percent. There should be evidence of a reduced rate of economic growth, if one believes that increased income taxes decrease economic growth, but there is no supportive evidence.Madrick provides many more examples which support an increased governmental role.

In the final part of the book, Madrick presents an agenda that the government should adopt. This includes a universal pre-k program, college subsidies, universal healthcare, investment in infrastructure/energy, unemployment expansion, social security solvency, etc.[...]

The book is about redistribution of wealth, which are words that are rarely spoke in the U.S.However, Madrick provides a solvent plan and evidence to support his thesis. This is not a liberal rant.Madrick is harsh on both republicans and democrats. If you are interested in an increased government that supports equality, read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars historical perspective bought up-to-date
Jeff Madrick presents an historical outline of an active U.S. government and how it must maintain an active role if we are to continue our prosperity through a mainly capitalist economic system.

4-0 out of 5 stars a big argument for sane political discourse
Republicans seem to be in denial that we already have a huge government. the difference is that Republicans support big govt. for the sake of the warfare state, while demos for the welfare state. what about statistic that 80% of R&D at universities is supported directly or indirectly by the Pentagon? Americans need to understand that all the investment in the military produces end products that either are destroyed (bombs, bullets) or wear out (trucks, guns). that investment if applied to civilian life would produce permanent end products such as houses, infrastructure improvements and the like. your statistics on income disparity and stagnation are very sobering. i left america to move overseas after college in 1982 and returned in 2005. hardly recognized the nation. people work much harder for much less. quality of life plummets. nature of media is like a vast dumbed down propaganda machine. impression that the country is one vast intellectual prison camp. it also seems to me that the debate on health care and the refusal to seriously consider the single payer option used in many european countries indicates that americans no longer have a sense of social contract. the mass media also is so corporately driven that it is able to shape the debate on any particular issue according to the dictates of wall st. and the financier class. our country has become in all but name a third world nation of gross social and economic inequality.

The only things I found disappointing in your book were:

a. your discussion of globalization. your proposal that the US pressure its trading partners to improve their wage structures and environmental efforts seems hopelessly naive, especially since US wages are so regressive themselves.

b. your failure to address the perceived corruption of the federal reserve central banking system. since the release of aaron russo's film America from Freedom to Fascism, there is a growing perception among the public that the federal reserve is an elitist system that serves the narrow interests of the financier class to the detriment of the public as a whole and that serves to concentrate greater levels of wealth into Wall St. institutions. there is a sense that the Fed is a massive disinformation program designed to dupe the public. there even is a spreading belief that the entire fractional reserve banking system is hopelessly corrupted and permits the banks to obtain obscene profits and to dilute the money supply. (consider that for every $1 paid out by banks in interest payments to savings account holders, they accrue $20 in interest revenues from loans. this is perhaps the highest profit margin (1900%) of any industry on earth!) there also is outrage that the original income tax amendment provided for taxation of corporate profits but not personal incomes and that this too has been disregarded. your book fails to address any of these rising concerns.

c. your failure to consider the problem that history indicates that no ruling class ever willingly surrendered its powers. there is a growing sense in the nation that only armed revolt will enable the kinds of reforms your book discusses and suggests. your approach is far too passive and optimistic.

1-0 out of 5 stars No case, just revisionist history and logical fallacies
Madrick would be better served arguing for his case for moral legitimacy rather than efficiency and growth, but even then he would fail due to logical fallacies. ... Read more

Product Description
Global politics in the 1980s and 1990s have been transformed by revolution and reformation. Political systems have crashed or teetered precariously as entire governments and national boundaries have dissolved. Even the relatively stable industrialized democracies have been forced to reorganize their governments in the face of the increasing discontent of their citizens. Guy Peters provides a concise and insightful guide to the fundamental ideas underlying these reform movements and their future impact on governance.

Focusing on Anglo-American examples, Peters reveals how the reform efforts reflect four major alternative models of state governance based respectively on the concepts of market, participation, flexibility, and deregulation. His close examination of these administrative models underscores their wide-ranging implications for reformers, bureaucrats, and public administrators, as well as the crucial importance of integrating ideals with contexts in any attempt to make government more responsive.

An internationally recognized authority on public administration, Peters draws upon an impressive array of sources to provide a unique synthesis of new approaches to improving governance in the industrialized democracies. His work will help scholars and administrators alike gain a much clearer understanding of the ideas and processes that influence those approaches as the world moves ever nearer to millennium's end.

This revised edition includes three new chapters that add valuable analysis and perspective to current debates surrounding the political and administrative change in less-developed countries, the deficiencies of public administration theory, and the ways in which reform begets further reform and creates a belief in the desirability of continuous reform.

This book is part of the Studies in Government and Public Policy series. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The Future of Governing by Guy Peters (2001, 2nd edition)
Peters's book The Future of Governing (2001) is an interesting theoretical synopsis of continual challenges joined with an emerging obsession to reform the global public sectors. In the other words this book, with its comparative intention and partial historical analysis, provides very complex picture of the current situation with several implications how the public administration should look like in the future.
Moreover, by reading this book I've got an impression that the reforms are mostly based on good governance practices which should indirectly create one ideal system which would fit to the public sectors all around the world. However, the concept of New Public Management and principals of democracy - where citizens are not anymore only receivers but also active players, have created situation which requires unceasing improvements of public performance - only because people are different and they have different needs which constantly change with the time.
I highly recommend this book to everybody who wants to find inspiring answers on often contradictory activities occurring in the current public sector.

2-0 out of 5 stars Useful content, poor presentation
If this is the second edition, I'd be scared to open the first. This book reads like the rough draft of a lengthy working paper. The sentences are convoluted and don't flow from one to the next, and the author seems to go out of his way to make everything passive tense and start every sentence with "it". Combine this with the breezy way in which he briefly invokes concepts from other papers or recent history (sometimes three or four in a sentence) without providing any explanation whatsoever, and you have a difficult read. If you're educated enough to catch most of his "inside jokes" (he loves quotes), you probably don't need to read the book anyway.

I'm also frustrated by the way he slips personal opinions in as facts, often without providing any substantiating argument or background. I'm new to political science, but I know that in the social sciences if you espouse a certain view you should at least explain why, and probably also mention that there are other opinions on the matter. For example, on page 2:

"Despite the popular mythology to the contrary, it is rare that governments are imperialistic and go looking for new problems to solve; they are more likely to be handed the poisoned chalice of an insuperable problem."

Peters states this as plain, bald truth: no mention is made of public choice theory, which makes a valid rebuttal to Peters' opinion. I'm sure the book could be a useful EDITORIAL on the subject of 20th century policy reform after some thorough editing, but it shouldn't parade as a text. ... Read more

Product Description
Double-digit unemployment. Housing prices plummeting. One of the largest stock market crashes in history. There's no doubt that we're in a serious economic crisis, perhaps even the Second Great Depression. Many in the federal government want you to be afraid of economic collapse so that they can take advantage of American workers with more taxes, more debt, and earmarks coming out of their ears. What's worse, Congress is pushing government solutions to problems that government actually created-a vicious cycle that needs to end. Until we can return to a fiscally sound government, there's only one thing we can do with this economic situation: capitalize on it. You can do so by taking advantage of low interest rates, government stimulus programs, and inflation of the U.S. Dollar. You can also obtain government grants, take unemployment money, and start a business to reduce your tax obligations. And if all else fails, you can take your business offshore. This book will show you how to do all of that and more in easy step-by-step techniques. Stop being afraid of another economic depression and start taking advantage of the government that is trying to take advantage of you! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars dissapointing
Other than the chapter on gold, I found it to be of no use to me. I felt that the part about trying to get unemployment by otherwise normal ways did not impress me.It's not that I disagree with everything he says in his book, but I could not put into practical use all of his suggestions. As an average joe I was looking for ways to stay financialy secure in the coming months and years. Others may find the book interesting or helpful, but I cannot reccomend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid
3-stars for length (it is only 6 bucks after all), but 5-stars for the concept, the writing and the techniques. I've taken a couple of the suggestions and started investing in TIPS and gold. I'm not ready to get laid off to get unemployment (pretty funny section though), but I'm looking in to starting a 5013c to get a grant to do what I want. Brilliant. It's our money, why shouldn't we be taking advantage of it?!

5-0 out of 5 stars This rocks
THe history will make you mad and the techniques will give you something to do about it. Government's encroaching on our liberties but you CAN do something about it- get this book- you won't be sorry!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good synopsis, clever ways to capitalize on the current system
"Surviving" is along the lines of a number of books recently released (Meltdown, Gimme My Money Back, Liberty and Tyranny) that give an explanation of how the US got into this current financial "crisis". Morse does put a unique twist with a history going back to the late 1800s showing that we had economic depressions since banks started dominating finance. But government didn't have to put up massive bailouts or stimulus plans back then and we still got out of the mess. Now, however, we have all these government inventions (like the Fed and income tax) to prevent economic depressions and it looks like not only did the government prevent downturns, it made them worse!

After the history, Morse goes into ways to capitalize on the current system- including taking advantage of stimulus, getting grants, going on unemployment, and taking your business offshore if all else fails. This is a clever book and one that you should get soon before the recovery is in your rear view mirror! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Never Again will I use Amazon for books
I purchased this book from Amazon because of the good price and reasonable shipping. I paid for expedited shipping so I could receive my book in time for my second assignment. It said 2-7 days it would be at my door. On the 7th day when my book never came, I emailed the seller to see what was going on. Apparently, Amazon never sent the seller the email to let him know to send my the book. But they sure took my money. I asked the seller for my shipping money back, and to ship it to me ASAP, but instead he refunded my entire money, not what I wanted. Therefore, I will never ever use this site for book purchases. If Amazon is going to charge my account for a purchase, they need to get on the right page with its sellers. Now I still do not have a book for my course because after the whole ordeal it was not worth it because my class was half way over. ... Read more

Product Description
“Dr. Geiger’s research proposes innovative and practical responses to the ‘cost war’ fought by government organizations struggling with lower budget levels. His sustained research contributions into the measurement and management of cost in government organizations promise to improve government’s mission effectiveness by improving its mission efficiency.”—Association of Government Accountants

As the United States moves from Cold War to Cost War, the management of cost has greatly increased in importance. In fact, the greatest threat today to the strength of the nation may be poor management of the limited remaining resources.

Winning the Cost War documents a new doctrine of cost management developed from battlefield management, one of managementÂ’s oldest applications. Dale Geiger defines and illustrates new ideas for everything from managerial cost accounting to analysis and accountability.

“Winning the Cost War has moved managerial costing from being a secondary chore to a framework for success in today’s environment. A must-read for agency and corporate leaders who need to adopt battlefield instincts of strategy and tactics and apply them in the new fiscal war.”—Ward Melhuish, partner, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP
