A total of 344 samples comprising of different vegetables, fodder and grain crops were obtained from a long-term experiment under sewage irrigation. The aerobic bacterial plate counts for vegetables, fodder and grain crops ranged between 2x10^6 and 3.5x10^7, 6x10^6 and 3x10^8, 2x10^5 and 3.8x10^1^0, respectively, while the corresponding Faecal coliform ranged between <2 and 9x10^5, 9x10^2 and 2x10^5 and <2, indicating that the pathogenic loads got reduced below permissible level in the produce that was harvested after sun drying in the field itself, whereas the parts coming in direct contact were the most severely contaminated. The health hazards could be markedly lowered with adoption of some of the low cost practices such as repeated washings, exposure of the produce to sunlight and raising the crops on beds. The coliform counts in vegetables were within permissible limits by two washings with water, exposing these to sunlight for about 4h and removing the two outmost leaves of cabbage. From the author: Nitrate contamination of shallow groundwater has been widely documented in association with agriculture in the Coastal Plain region of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Elevated groundwater nitrate levels limit the use of shallow groundwater for human consumption and also result in elevated nonpoint source nitrogen (N) loads to Chesapeake Bay via elevated stream base-flow nitrate concentrations. This study investigated the effects of cereal grain winter cover crops on nitrate leaching rates, profile nitrate storage, and nitrate concentrations in shallow groundwater in two field-scale watersheds planted continuously in corn (Zea mays L.) from 1984 through 1996. Winter-fallow conditions were maintained following the 1984 through 1987 growing seasons and cereal rye (Secale cereale L.) as a cover crop was planted immediately after grain harvest from 1988 through 1996. Cover crop effects on nitrate leaching rates also were evaluated in continuous no-till corn plots from 1990 through 1995. Nitrate leaching losses from the root zone and recharge of shallow aquifers occurred primarily during winter months under conditions of low evapotranspiration. The potential for nitrate leaching losses was determined primarily by the availability of nitrate in the root zone at the onset of the winter groundwater recharge period. Rye winter cover crops planted after corn harvest consistently reduced nitrate-N concentrations in root zone leachate to less than 1 mg/L during most of the groundwater recharge period, and reduced annual nitrate leaching losses by approximately 80% relative to winter-fallow treatments. Shallow groundwater nitrate-N concentrations under long-term continuous corn production decreased from the 10 to 20 mg/L range to less than 5 mg/L after seven years of cover crop use. Cover crops appeared to increase corn yields under adverse growing season conditions, but limited residual nitrate availability during the growing season relative to winter-fallow settings. Cover crop growth was generally N limited, suggesting that increased N inputs would have little effect on nitrate leaching, but would increase cover crop contributions to soil carbon pools.

For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-a-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved. This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the 230 countries of the world). Field trials were run in the humid forest zone of Cameroon to investigate the effects of crop rotation, cover crops and bush fallow on infestations by the noctuid stemborer Busseola fusca (Fuller) and on yield of maize. A continuous maize production system was compared with crop sequence systems, in which maize followed a grain legume (cowpea, soybean), cover crop (mucuna, pigeon pea) or a bush fallow. Compared to the continuous maize cropping system, maize in the crop sequence with legume and fallow systems had significantly higher leaf and stem nitrogen content at 35 and 63 days after planting (DAP), respectively. Differences in K and P at 35 and 63 DAP, and of N in stem and grain at harvest were not significant. Maize in the rotation systems had 1.5-2 times more borers per plant compared to the continuous maize production systems, particularly at the early stages of maize growth. At 63 DAP, larval mortalities were 1.4-1.5 higher in rotation systems than in the continuous maize system. As a result, dead-hearts and tunnel length did not vary significantly among treatments. In the insecticide protected plots, when comparing with the maize-maize cropping system, average grain yields were increased by 15.1-24.6% and 30.3-42.5% in crop sequences of grain legumes with maize and cover crops fallow systems, respectively. However, grain yield losses due to borers were 1.9-3.1 times higher in the continuous maize production system than in the crop sequences of grain legumes with maize and 4.5-11.1 times higher compared to maize after cover crops. It is concluded that an increased nutritional status of the plants lead to an increase in borer attacks at the early stage of plant growth, but also to improved plant vigour, resulting finally in a net benefit for the plant and grain yield. ...
