4-0 out of 5 stars Grammar, etc
It is a workbook with explanation. It will not make your kid a grammar ace or award winning writer, but he will have fun with this one (if he likes fairytales). The best part was the learning extensions. These were silly writing prompts that encouraged DS to write his version of fairytales. He appreciated being able to use his imagination in his writing, and I appreciated someone else coming up with a writing topic for the day (sometimes that is the worst part :p) ... Read more

Product Description

Since its initial publication in 1993, this entertaining grammar book has helped thousands of middle school teachers teach even the most reluctant learners using lessons that de-emphasize rote learning and treat the parts of speech as building blocks for crazy writing assignments. Prompts include using at least 10 prepositional phrases from a list to write a scene from the new vegetable horror novel Squash Cemetery, and using lively verbs to write the monologue of a soda can telling his miserable life story to a psychologist. This new edition offers quirky quizzes to check student progress, even more writing ideas, and a guide to Internet enrichment activities, including "Stupid Roadside Attractions," in which students research goofy tourist traps in America and use vivid adjectives to describe the six that they think are the stupidest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Summer Workbook
My son struggled in English in 5th grade. Although he passed, our school system cut out summer school. I ordered some workbooks for him for the summer to help him. I must say this is the best workbook out of all of the ones I ordered. It helps teach the various parts of speech. I admit my son struggled through the book, but at the end of the summer his confidence has improved and he understands his parts of speech now!

5-0 out of 5 stars Can be easily integrated into lessons - fun and engaging
I would not really build an entire lesson around the activities in this book, but use them in the context of a unit which requires focus on parts of speech. The worksheets are engaging and fun, not the usual droll and uninspiring worksheets taken straight out of textbooks. I would use them as sponge activities, or as filler activities when there's some time left over at the end of a lesson. In doing so, instructional time can be utilized to its maximum and students will benefit from learning. This is an invaluable resource for LA teachers, grades 5 and up.

2-0 out of 5 stars There are better books out there
This book is nothing but a collection of worksheets to "practice" the parts of speech. The subject matter of the worksheets is a little out of the ordinary, but nothing extraordinarily creative. Each part of speech is handled separately; there's no mixed review. Unless you're planning to spend an extensive amount of time on each part of speech and can't think of how you're going to fill all that time, save your money.

4-0 out of 5 stars A worthwhile purchase
My middle school students love the activities in this book.I find that I pick and choose lessons based on what I'm teaching from my grammar book. This book makes grammar a bit more interesting for students and I'd recommend it for anyone who teaches grammar.

5-0 out of 5 stars my high schooler likes this!
I've used this book with my high school aged son who had grammar all these years but hated it.This he enjoys! It does not teach technical aspects such as diagramming sentences. However, it does review and provide realistic practice, in a variety of manners for each topic, for all the parts of speech, emphasizing why they matter in real writing/real life! The other reviews sounded like this is for younger kids.I disagree, I think it is for the child who has had difficulty with grammar and needs to tighten up their understanding of the relations between words.Another very good grammar book is Jensen's Punctuation.Good luck! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars The title is a sad irony.
It should say A Quick Guide To "Proper" English not "Good" English. Apparently the author of this book needs to study English Grammar.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy purchase
My order arrived on time and in the condition described by the seller. I'm very satisfied with my purchase.

3-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, that's for sure
A little unwieldy at times, but it is thorough and concise, easier for an English-speaking adult than for its possible needed audience. Useful but not thrilling.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Resource for Beginning Writers
"Essentials of English Grammar" is a nice introduction to grammar for beginning writers. It begins by going over the basics of grammar and then eventually builds up to more complex constructions.Towards the end of the book, there is a short section on style. This gives beginning writers some tips on how to make their writing a little more professional. Finally, there is a useful section on words that are easily mistaken for each other.I found that section to be very useful even for advanced students.Basically this is a book for beginning writers. It would be a good reference for high schools students, college freshmen who haven't had much experience in writing, and students who are studying English as a second or foreign language. If you have lots of writing experience, you won't find anything new here.Give it as a gift to a high school student and their writing skills will improve if they read it.

4-0 out of 5 stars cool little grammer book
I love this book. This is a thin book so easy to carry and has almost everything that you need in your day to day work. The book is extremely handy and essential if you are writing essays or even letters. English is not my first language so sometimes I use it. To be honest everyday. I like the book. The other good thing is that it is succint and do not take you through 50 pages of example. Very practical book> But this is not for the ones who are majoring in Enlgish language and wants to write a thesis on literature. So please judge your purpose and then buy it ... Read more
