5-0 out of 5 stars Lives up to its name and then some.
Every topic is well chosen (not only everything a language learner needs to stay out of trouble, but also everything that helps the language learner thrive),
clearly explained with effective examples,
cross-referenced as needed,
clearly arranged,
easy to find,
easy to understand,
easy to remember
and easy to put to immediate use.
The book is cheap.
The book almost the dimensions of a paperback Louis L'Amour novel.
What more can we ask for in a pocket reference grammar?

Carry this little gem with
your favorite compact dictionary,
the Spanish-language paperback that you're enjoying
and Alfredo González Hermoso's "Spanish Verb Manual" (ISBN 0844213462, almost the same dimensions as this book, yet a big improvement on "501 Spanish Verbs"). ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Theoretically well-organized, but...
My husband and I ordered two of these books so we could study together, and although we've only got through the first couple of chapters, the content seems good so far, and was clearly meant to be well-organized, but there was an oops in both books that takes more extra effort than many language learners may want to invest. The pages were assembled backwards, so that you need to skip ahead two pages, then go back one, then ahead and back and so on. It's manageable, but not ideal, and I'm sure there are plenty of other books out there that were assembled in order.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best French grammar text!
I have had years of French, lived in France, and been inflicted with many many French textbooks (mostly memorization)....and, by accident, discovered this wonderful book in my public library. It simplifies French grammar...it gives you the rules (did you know there are rules for gender in French?) and makes it very very easy to, with a little work, pick up all the important parts of French grammar. There are exercises, with the English translations...words like "conditional" and "future perfect" are really explained (i.e. given the English equivalents) unlike many dictionaries, which just tell you "the pluperfect" is thus and so, etc. (Which means you need Latin) This is short, enjoyable, and clear....all the rules are here. It will not help with pronunciation...but with good CDs or tapes, this will fill in the grammatical foundation. Highly recommended! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference
I got my copy of this book at a used book shop, and it was so worth it. I have several other German grammar guides, but this is the one I always end up coming back to. I'm in my second year of college level German, and this book is still hella useful. Whenever I'm writing an essay I use this book to look up little grammar tips. It may not be a great way for you to actually learn German, however. Leave that to an actual text book.

Everything is laid out well; it's easy to find things and the grammar is straightforward and easy to understand. The best part is how easy it is to find what your looking for. What is the genetive ending for this again? How should I end this adverb? This book really delivers.

It's a little silly to be so gung-go about a grammar book, but I've tried allot of them and this is the only one that works well for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Covers nearly all grammar topics without mentally exhausting you.
I chose this book over 'German Grammar Drills' by Ed Swick because it seemed to be the one I would continue to use. While Swick's book might cover slightly more grammatic technicalities, this one does much the same, but in a less exhausting manner.

There are 87 units/chapters with each being about 1-2 pages long and containing 3 sets of quiz questions, ranging between 5-10 questions per set.

I have looked at many of the 'Teach Yourself' books before but have always found them to be second tier material in the way they constantly base their chapters upon dialogs at a library or bank or an airport. I never liked the way the grammar rules seemed to be addressed in such a willy-nilly manner. That's where this book differs. There are no dialogs and it simply addresses grammar topics in a straightforward approach, building up gradually from the most basic.

It's got a very good ratio of lessons/rules to questions/exercises.

While this probably wouldn't be considered anything near an exhaustive reference of grammar, I think its a book you might actually finish studying. ... Read more

Product Description
The 'guided discovery' approach of "Teach Yourself English Grammar" will give you the confidence to work out the rules of grammar for yourself and will help you learn and understand English grammar without a teacher. Each unit starts by looking at the meaning of the structure and asks you questions to check that you have understood. Then, it gives the form and looks at the spelling. It goes on to list the most common mistakes students make and ends with practice and exercises so you can have a final check that you have fully understood the grammar point the unit has been teaching you. The answers to all the exercises are at the back of the book, so you can check your progress and go back over grammar points that you have not fully understood. You can dip in and out of the book as a quick grammar check or you can work your way through it to give you a thorough grounding in essential and more advanced grammar. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Trying to make sense of Russian
I am a beginning/intermediate student of Russian, although I have studied many other languages before trying to take on Russian.Along the way, I have learned a lot about what constitutes a good reference book for a language. This one is not quite perfect, there are a few typos. These are very few, but unfortunately, one major one is a chapter title (Chapter 15 should be "Instrumental singular" but instead is titled "Instrumental irregular").Otherwise, it is a well constructed, wonderfully clear, and very useful book.As an added benefit, each point of grammar is explained on a single page, then followed on the next page by directed excercises (with answers in the back of the book) that allow one to learn the specific topic.I am still pursuing my study of Russian and have found it a useful reference all along the way.I cannot recommend this book highly enough. If you want to find a clear way out of the maze of Russian, as it appears to a beginner, (or even an intermediate student -- do you understand how "open" versus "closed" conditions are expressed), this book is a very good starting point.I use it all the time. ...
