Product Description
Talking about Writing is for high school teachers and students who

1. need a common vacabulary with which to discuss written language;

2. desire a working knowledge of the chief elements of sentence structure, grammar, usage and punctuation as they apply to the wiritng process;

3. demand an integrated approach, and a sequenced format adaptable to individual lessons; and

4. appreciate the help of an answer key.

A mechanic immersed in the intricacies of engine repair does not ask for a "thingummy" or a "whatsit." He or she names the tool and holds out a hand to receive it.

In the same way, teachers and students poring over the products of the writing process need a basic common vocabulary with which to discuss the work. They need to make mutually understandable statements which will clarify and improve the material under review. For example, "This sentence contains a misplaced modifier" is more helpful and precise than "Don't you think putting this bit in a different place will make the sentence sound better?" Talking about Writing supplies this basic vocabulary.

The text has a simple format. It teaches the recognition of the nine sentence errors which writers commonly make. It integrates the grammar necessary to understand each sentence error. Sentence combining, usage, and punctuation exercises strengthen writing technique.

Talking about Writing fills a need for both a concrete objective in English language study and a teaching plan. It provides a method of entry - the nine sentence errors - which is useful to many: beginning teachers, for example; teachers of other subjects who have been asked to pick up one or two blocks of English in the timetable; teachers wish a clear explanation of the language in the writing process; or parents who run home school.

A further advantage is to make a connection between the teaching of English language and other languages; such as, French or Spanish. Students studying a second language are expected to recognize, for example, a direct object or a past participle in order to make the necessary agreement. The grammar component accompanying each sentence error encourages the transfer of this knowledge from one language to another.

Talking about Writing is sequenced and self-explanatory. In each chapter the material progresses in simple and logical increments to the desired end; namely, to recognize a sentence error in order to discuss written work, practice effective writing techniques, and empower communication. The sentence errors progress in difficulty from grades 8 to 12. The format is adapted for individual lessons.

Curriculum guides tend to be written in generalities. Talking about Writing provides the teacher with a pattern. Having experienced the focus of this programme and the integration of the topics, he or she then knows how to access additional material to suit a student's individual needs.

How Talking about Writing is organized

Students are taught to recognize the nine major sentence errors: two in each of grades 8 to 11, and one in grade 12, as follows:

Grade 8-Run-on Sentence, Sentence Fragment

Grade 9-Lack of Parallel Structure, Misplaced Modifier

Grade 10- Dangling Participle, Lack of Agreement

Grade 11- Indefinite Antecedent, Incorrect Tense

Grade 12- Wordiness ... Read more

I have been looking for this title for some time now and have had no luck.I own the Cassell's Contempory French, Spanish, and German and think they are wonderful. After searching through italian grammar books on Amazon, I discovered that the Langenscheidt Pocket Italian Grammar was formatted the same as the other Cassell's titles I own.Once I check the Langenscheidt French/Spanish/German Grammars, they were identical to the Cassell series, right down the the page numbers and listings in the table of contents. The Cassell's Contempory Italian is now Langenscheidt Pocket Italian Grammar...

5-0 out of 5 stars a shame this is out of print!
This is a great book for improving your Italian. You need to know at least some basics of grammar to use the book effectively. However it is a complete review grammar, followed by lots of special sections (how to write letters, how to write essays etc etc). There is information in here that I haven't seen anywhere else.I recommend this very highly, for example, over the Proudfoot grammar. If you find a used copy, I suggest that you snap it up! ... Product Description

"The Mountain Man's Field Guide to Grammar" is the brainchild of a man who loved to write, but hated learning the rules."
Samuel G. Freedman, the New York Times

A Fearless Adventure in Grammar, Style, and Usage

Conquer new frontiers with this fresh & outrageous take on grammar! The Mountain Man's Field Guide to Grammar - with its fresh, witty, and humorous style - turns the stuffy old grammar book format on its head, delightfully reminding you that grammar can actually be fun.

Whether you are a writer, professional, student, or just an adventurous soul, The Mountain Man's Field Guide to Grammar is the perfect trail guide to lead you safely through the tangles and gorges of the grammar wilderness.

Seasoned throughout with colorful stories, clever anecdotes, and offbeat words of wisdom, The Mountain Man's Field Guide to Grammar relives the rollicking, riotous days of the old West and the long-lost lore of the mountain man.

Mount up, and keep a sharp eye. Keep your steel keen and your powder dry. Where we go, few follow.

"In writing this book, I have attempted to make each line of text, each rule of grammar, and each example fresh and new and original. But a noun is a noun and a verbal is a verbal, and festooning them in gaudy finery can neither add nor detract from their essence. American grammar and construction—the essential stuff—is staid and stately, elegant, sensuous, raw, and beautiful."

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious and practical
Holy smokes! If this had been my grammar book back in junior high, or whenever it was that the tedium of rules overcame my innate joy of learning, I'd have probably learned all this stuff. Learned it and spared countless teachers, professors and bosses along the way the trouble stumbling over my confusion of punctuation and mixed tenses.

Want to tune up your grammar and have a good time doing so? Buy the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars The most informational grammar book ever.
Mr. Spina covers every aspect of grammar in the book, and it's actually understandable!

Not only do I no longer make silly grammatical errors, but my writing style has tremendously improved. Being a college student, I have to be able to write good essays. So far in my college career, I have never gotten under and 'A' on my essays, and all my teachers think they are wonderful.

To be honest, everything I know about writing essays came from THIS book.

P.S. It's a fun read. Not even slightly boring. I didn't really understand how interesting mountain men were until I read this!

If you want to learn about grammar from A to Z or just want to improve your writing, I highly recommend this easy read over any other grammar book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Most entertaining grammar book you ever read
Crittur:

Reading this grammar book is like tapdancing with your sweetie at the rendezvous. Who ever heard of a grammar book written by a mountain man? No one. Those are supposed to be penned by bespectacled spinsters. But not this one. It's a hoot! The grammar is muscular, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mountain Man's Field Guide to Grammar
This book is delightful!Mr. Spina weaves his story with lessons in grammar that is original and enjoyable.I never knew the study of grammar could be so much fun.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grammar with Style
Gary Spina has succeeded in producing a grammar book comparable to the best-selling "Eats Shoots and Leaves" tainted by a mountain man's flare. His book is a laugh-out-loud way to master the rules of grammar. It is a truly painless way (except for the stitch in one's side caused by laughing) to learn. If you're one of many clueless people who can't tell an expletive from an appositive, this book is for you.As well as introducing you to the life of a mountain man, this book will help to keep you from embarassingly dangling your participles in public. It's the most fun you'll have with the English language, and it will even fit in your briefcase.Mary Louise Helwig-Rodriguez ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended to me by a native Spanish speaker.
I am currently taking a Spanish 1 course at our local college.A colleague of mine, who is a native Spanish speaker recommended this book to me.Fortunately, although out of print, I was able to find it online. This handbook is clearly written and an excellent resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great supplementary study aid
This is a very helpful study aid for Spanish speakers at most levels. I consider it a study aid only because it uniquely covers grammatical points that are geared towards the Intermediate and Advanced speaker but it certainly does not go into depth and definitely does not cover any complex structures. I found it to be very practical, with clear and concise explanations and examples provided. It's not a workbook so don't expect any practice exercises. The back of book serves as a handy reference and covers subject matters outside of the grammatical realm such business writing, idiomatic expressions, thematic vocabulary etc. This book is an excellent complement to a good grammar book. It definitely is handy for clarifying doubts from time to time and the grammar topics cover are the most typical reoccurring grammar points that present difficulty for learners of the Spanish language. The lessons are in English with relevant examples in Spanish.

How often do you need a quick answer to a simple grammatical question? Just when should you (or would you) place (or put) a hyphen between (or inbetween) words?
Is it "its" or "it's?""Shall I?" or "Will I?"Is your handwriting "legible" or "readable?"Do you "lend" money or "loan" money? Is your perfume "sensual" or "sensuous?"Did your last job interview go "nowhere" or "no place?"

A great copyeditor is a writer's best friend - and I have one sitting on my desk! His name is Harry Shaw.

"Errors in English" has a dictionary-like section that quickly provides the answers to questions like:Is Susan a "person" or an "individual?"Is that chewing gum sample "free" or "gratis?"
