4-0 out of 5 stars Explains the basics of computer graphics
This book was written in 1984 and explains how to create graphics using the BASIC programming language. For most computer users today, this is not helpful since many programs do the work for you.For computer enthusiasts who still tinker with the BASIC programming language, this could be helpful.

This book not only explains the basic routines needed to create the graphics, but it explains the mathematics involved and shows diagrams to help you visualize what you will be creating. Some of the ideas covered in this book are animation, analytic geometry, and three-dimensional graphics.

If you have a fairly good grounding in mathematics, this book could be of use to computer enthusiasts. If you let the software do the work for you, then this book will not help you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So Happy to have this book!!
I had a copy of this book as a gift from my son. I loved it. I let someone borrow it.. Never got it back.I was so happy I found it and thanks so much for sending it so fast!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good resource if you are computer literate
This is a good reference for general information about using a computer to enhance or create art. The author mainly uses Adobe products, such as Photoshop and Illustrator for editing images and graphics. Before you will be able to create these projects, you have to be familiar with your software AND have software to create some of the effect (image editor, paint and graphics program). If you are looking for a book that specifically tells you how to do these things, that will not be found here. You have to be "computer-literate" and software-literate to get the most from this book.

There is a lot of good information provided and several projects are shown using illustrations and photographs, not in a step-by-step format.

4-0 out of 5 stars starting point for computer crafts
Ashford knows the art of computer craftmaking and provides the reader with very good starting points for crafts that intertwine computer and manual art. Regarding hardware/software she clearly favors Mac/Adobe, so her recommendations reflect this.In spite of this slant, she gives some helpful overviews of the technological side of various formats, graphic standards, etc.
Want to intermingle computer graphics with your arts and crafts? Here's a good starting point.

5-0 out of 5 stars Restoring modesty to the artist's tool enriches everyone
The potential of the computer in craft has been seriously damaged by the excitement computers have generated.A parallel can be found when the Russian novelist Tolstoy was given a dictaphone to help speed up his writing. After a few weeks he threw it out the window. His neighbor asked if it didn't work.Tolstoy's reply was "It worked fine, but I got so excited using it I couldn't write." For almost two decades a generation of designers have succumbed to the excitement and hype of the computer without significantly adding any real content or substance to their work under the digitized banner. It is time for that to change, and Janet Ashford is a winning harbinger of that change.

It doesn't help matters that most design software seems to be written by the left-brain dominant spouses of craft practitioners...well intentioned souls with no sense of the real kinesthetics of working color, form, texture.

Janet Ashford has navigated through the difficult middle course between technology and entrancement. She draws! She creates custom palettes in her application software! She doesn't hit you over the head or talk down to the reader.Perhaps her experience of designing for and with her daughter has given her the wonderful tone of teaching someone she likes, who is lacking in knowledge but not in ability. That is a prized gift in any teacher, and Ashford has it mastered.

She has maintained her enthusiasm, her innocent pleasure in sharing the joys of color and pattern, line, light and form. She is conscientious in gathering really useful resources together into a book that can pay off in serious fun the first weekend you get to use it, without resorting to false expectations. Buy the book.Use the example. You, and your craft, will be enriched without hype or over-simplification.Serious artists and craftspeople do not expect the tool to do the real work of creation for them. This book is written for the serious artists and craftspeople at any stage of their careers...from about 9 years old on up.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Inspiring Book
I can't say enough great things about this book. It's full of interesting projects to try, and the design of the book itself is great, light and airy, despite being packed with useful information.

You'll need some software to try the projects in it, an image editor of some kind and a printer. But that's all you need for most of the projects described.Janet Ashford has really creative ideas for transforming every day objects like metal tins and boxes, using computer designs.

I can just about guarantee, if you're artistic at all and you buy this book, you'll not only enjoy it, but you'll wind up designing some really amazing things as a result! ... Read more

Rapid advances in 3-D scientific visualization have made a major impact on the display of behavior. The use of 3-D has become a key component of both academic research and commercial product development in the field of engineering design. Computer Visualization presents a unified collection of computer graphics techniques for the scientific visualization of behavior. The book combines a basic overview of the fundamentals of computer graphics with a practitioner-oriented review of the latest 3-D graphics display and visualization techniques. Each chapter is written by well-known experts in the field. The first section reviews how computer graphics visualization techniques have evolved to work with digital numerical analysis methods. The fundamentals of computer graphics that apply to the visualization of analysis data are also introduced. The second section presents a detailed discussion of the algorithms and techniques used to visualize behavior in 3-D, as static, interactive, or animated imagery. It discusses the mathematics of engineering data for visualization, as well as providing the current methods used for the display of scalar, vector, and tensor fields. 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent product and delivery
This is a must have resource for anyone wanting to know what goes on underneath the covers. It is well written and has examples to reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Used Book Looking Brand New
Received the book earlier than expected.
Also did'nt expect it to look like brand new since I bought it used.

5-0 out of 5 stars i whish i can give it more than 5 starts
This book is the best of the kind.
With 1000+ pages, this book is a very broad and deep interview of windows graphics system. This book is for advanced developers. It does not teach you hand by hand how to draw a text, how to draw a window..., instead, this book is for the person who want to know how Microsoft implemented the Win32 graphics system. This book includes many windows internals and undocumented stuff.
I want to say thanks and show respect to the author 'Feng Yuan', for his kindness to publish the knowledge.

Keep in mind this book was published in 2001, I whish there will be a 2nd version, which include the new changes in Windows XP, and include details of the OpenGL's connection with GRE. And about the new Longhorn graphics engine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on Windows GDI
This the most extensive, best explained Windows GDI book ever read by me! I hereby highly recommend this book to everyone who is doing GDI intensive work.

Great job, Yuan!

1-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Coverage, Poorly Written
After spending several weeks going over the contents of this book, I do not recommend it to the beginning or intermediate readers.Feng Yuan insight into the Visual C++ environment is excellent; however, he does a very poor job with organizing and explaining the topic to the average reader.

I had a hard time following his technical jargon; it was no different than reading the MSDN help manual, which was really cut and dry.If it was his intent to write this book as a reference manual to demonstrate the features of GDI or for the advance developer (who probably doesn't need it to begin with), then he did a very good job. However, developers, like myself, who is just getting into GDI it just left me chasing the bandwagon.

The sample code had little or no comments; it was difficult trying to match his explanation to the code sample because he would write the explanation in its entirety and then provide the code sample at the end.Feng, if your reading this, please provide the code explanation in the context that it is being referenced.I had a hard time referring back to your code sample while following your explanations.

If you are a developer of C++, I recommend Kris Jamsa who does a very good job of organizing and structuring his books. If only Kris wrote a book on GDI, I would have opted for it than this one. ... Read more

Product Description
The world is inherently complex and multimedia in nature. The development of computer systems to tackle real-world problems is an extremely difficult task. As computers capable of manipulating multimedia information are becoming more powerful and commonplace, larger and more complex systems are increasingly being built. To fully comprehend the complexity of such undertakings, proper modelling of multimedia information and systems must be carried out. A model provides a high-level abstraction of the system in which the implementation is based upon. It permits the desirable properties of the system to be extracted and analyzed and also provides a uniform framework for integration between different systems, and for interactions between the system and human users. This volume is devoted to the discussion of effective modelling of multimedia information and systems for a wide range of applications. It aims to provide common modelling frameworks for the integration of the diverse subjects in the field of multimedia information. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Total Beginner's Book
If you're a total beginner, and I do mean total, you'll find this book useful. Also, you're better off if you're a Mac user. What I can't understand is how can you discuss graphics when everything is black andwhite? At least, the parts concerned with colors shouldn't be black andwhite, don't you think?

2-0 out of 5 stars Too basic
This book contains a few interesting chapters, but most of it is just space-filler.There's some good info about how to minimize the size of your graphics, but very little about how to actually make your graphic inthe first place!

The author should have chosen a couple of graphicprograms (ie Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro) and shown actual examples ofdifferent techniques that work well for web graphics (ie how to makelettering appear to glow or shimmer, liquid and fire effects, etc).Alsosome info on using scanned images would have been useful.

If you'recompletely new to graphics then you may learn something from it (get thebook out of the library, it's not work buying), otherwise don't bother.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny & Englightening
Web Graphics for Dummies is entirely fun as well as enlightening. I learned a lot not only about creating graphics for the web, but also aboutthe Internet in general. The demo programs on the CD are very useful andhelped me make a decision about what programs to buy. I liked this one alot!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not in a league with other "Dummies Tech Press" titles
I was extremely disappointed in Weg Graphics for Dummies, especially in comparison with other books in the "Dummies" series. Usually I find these books a great way to get a jump-start on a new technology, butnot this time. First, it seems ludicrous to publish a book on web graphicsthat is completely B&W. Several lessons on color refer to the B&Wimages in the book to demonstrate...DUH! The print quality in general wasinferior, making the graphic examples literally useless in many cases.Frequently you are unable to distinguish between the "before" and"after" images at all. If you know absolutely nothing about webgraphics, you will at least learn the difference between a .gif and a.jpg...but not a whole lot else. Also, you will be better served by thisbook if you are a Mac user vs. a PC user. If you are looking for a goodoverview on how to create icons, buttons, background borders and seamlesstiles, I suggest finding a book published with some color and some betterexamples. ... Product Description
Written for game programmers and developers, this book covers GPU techniques and supporting applications that are commonly used in games and similar real-time 3D applications. The authors describe the design of programs and systems that can be used to implement games and other applications whose requirements are to render real-time animation sequences (such as walks through complex scenes) at the high quality now available from GPUs.

The text is mainly structured around programming in Cg; but also includes techniques (in C++/OpenGl) that do not map onto GPU hardware. The supplementary CD includes implementation for most of the techniques covered in the book and full source code for an advanced render library in Cg/C++/OpenGL. This library can be used to quickly develop 3D games and applications which make use of the advanced features available in current programmable graphics hardware like GPU based animation, lighting, shadows and special effects. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars A pretty book from a distance
I bought this book because, standing in the bookstore thumbing through it, I thought that it seemed like a decent guide to modern GPU effects. The nice high-gloss pages have lots of nice colorful images, and there is a lot of code as well. However, when you actually try to learn something from reading this book, you may hit a roadblock fairly quickly. The problem is that there is precious little space devoted to explaining many of the shaders, and much of that space spells out only the totally obvious anyway, which leaves one doubly frustrated.

As an example, in the bump mapping section, there is a discussion on per fragment L and H computation as a means to getting higher quality results. The first thing to note is the declaration 'v2f IN'. It's noteworthy because 'v2f' is not defined anywhere! Thumbing backwards through the book, it becomes clear that this is some sort of structure for passing data from the vertex to fragment shaders, but not having it defined means you're scratching your head over what exactly is defined. Next, there is this bit of code:

// transform normal to world space
normal.xyz=normalize(normal.x*IN.tangent-normal.y*IN.binormal+normal.z*IN.normal);

WTF? One of the most interesting bits of the whole thing (bringing the normal into world space, as opposed to bringing the light and half angle variables into surface local space), and there is *absolutely no* explanation of why it's done this way or how that tight little snippet of code was derived. None. It's really unbelievable.

As another example, the parallax mapping code has this little snippet

// parallax code
...
float height = tex2D(rmtex,uv).w * 0.06 - 0.03;
...

Once again, WTF? What's with the magic numbers? Of course, once you understand what they mean, it's obvious, but then again, if things like this were obvious, you wouldn't be buying a book on the subject now would you?

The book is not garbage, it just needs to be expanded. It's pretty much impossible to actually learn anything if a particular topic has little more than a title and a few shader fragments thrown at you. I mean, don't get me wrong, writing a book like that would certainly be fun, but it would be of little use to anyone else.

4-0 out of 5 stars diverse game topics
A trifle surprising that no one else has already reviewed this book. Watt and Policarpo give a nice and current description of the advanced graphics. That are deployed in games. The narrative is a good combination of first principles physics and code examples and screen captures of rendered images. Of course, for motion, the images do this no justice. Still, even the static images should be inspiring to many readers.

Many topics are included. Like how to simulate particle systems. Basically, by discretising Newton's Equations of motion for a set of objects. This has been done for decades in science and engineering. Neat how it is now feasible for gaming. Though one difference is that in gaming, the rendering of the objects has high importance. Whereas for research systems, this was often a minor consideration.

Character animation is another well covered topic. Shows how to relieve the programmer from having to tediously code the motion of a human character in the game. With sophisticated skeletal frameworks that can be animated. An excursion into linear algebra and matrices. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Contents too basic for an advanced user book
The first part (chapter 1-3) contains basic informations on Visio (belonging to a starter book and not to an advanced title). 4-0 out of 5 stars Bring the world into your living room!
Calling this book "The Little Web Cam Book" is a bit of a misnomer. The book is huge, totaling 356 pages including the index. It is crammed full of useful information, lists of webcam sites, and places where one can download everything you need except a camera.

This is a greatbook! Ms Parker's writing style makes it seem like she is right there withyou, explaining each portion. More advanced users will know which parts toskip over, and most chapters stand on their own, so you don't have to readevery word to make sense of later chapters.

This was good for me, sinceI was not the least bit interested in reading about the screen savers orhow to make a photo my background. This part seemed to drag out, but thatis from the viewpoint of an expert; if you have never done those things, you might need to spend the time reading about them. For that reason, thebook spends quite a bit on the basics of these ideas. So if you still havethe same background picture on your desktop that came with it, check outthis portion of the book.

Other chapters cover tips for setting up thecam and choosing the best spots for broadcasting. If you want to startanother "cat-cam" or other pet-related site, it is worth readingher tips on how to make it exciting for your viewers even when the animalsdon't feel like being photographed. There are also some otherconsiderations you might want to read about before you invite anyone andeveryone into your home or office through a live webcam.

Another sectiontells about how to use the still pictures you can capture with a cam tomake GIF animations. This could be for fun, e-mail, or for your web page. The author also goes into creating and editing movies and how to insert GIFanimations and movies into web pages. This could save you from tons ofangry e-mail when your dog refuses to go near the webcam once it's live.

There is a chapter on troubleshooting problems and it seems to be rathercomplete. Just about every problem I can imagine occuring is listed herewith possible solutions and resources.

I expected a list of other peoplewho have webcam, but a nice feature I didn't expect was interviews withsome of the pioneers and leaders in webcamming. This turned out to be quitea treat.

Supplementary information in the book about videoconferencingwas great. I didn't expect to find it here either; the author could havewritten that separately and she and the publisher could have made a lotmore money selling it as another book. They didn't, so I think a "hatsoff" is in order. Thanks!

3-0 out of 5 stars not the in-depth tome that I expected
Having read the reviews, I expected a lot of deep information.I was mistaken. It is not a bad book, but if it stands out, it is mostly because the majority of Java authors figure that publishing a poorly documented APIis adequate.I'd call this an intermediate level book.

It lacks apermuted index, which is a must for a book like this.A lot of thenitty-gritty information is presented as an aside to demonstrating theexamples instead of a well thoughout discussion. Some of these are in theindex and some are not.

If you're looking for thorough discussions of theAWT architecture, keep looking. If you're looking for a good discussion ofhow to use layouts, this might be the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best 1.1 compliant, AWT reference around!
Graphic Java 1.1: Mastering the AWT is the best book that I've comeaccross, so far, for AWT programming. The book is a little advanced, newJava programmers may find this to be a little difficult. However, at thesame time, the book also clearly teaches the new 1.1 event handling model. This is an excellent book for anyone who needs to do Windows programmingwith Java.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good, if you're good too
It helped quite a bit, but the book will get deepquick with not a lot of explanation of how it got there. Yes I have it, read it and like it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Serious Java developers need to buy this book now!
I concur with the review listed above, but must add that anyone out there trying to use Layout managers must read the 100 pages dedicated to that topic in this book...absolutely the best coverage of GridBagLayout that I have ever seen, including a very demonstrative applet that goes a long way towards helping a person learn how to use this very complex layout manager. The only reason I couldn't rate this book a 10 is that I found several coding errors when examining and running the many, comprehensive examples contained on the CD that accompanies this book.Definitely a must read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, effective, and accurate. Excellent book.
There are very many sorry Java books on the market these days. Therefore, I was very glad to discover "Graphic Java", 2nd edition. I found it to be a thorough guide to the AWT. In addition, it is accurate throughout, whereas many books fail to properly explain and use the new event model or other features of JDK 1.1.

The book covers every aspect of the AWT, including events, containers vs components, layout managers, lightweight components, etc. Each discussion is peppered with effective examples that clarify the topic at hand. And, along the way, the authors point out good coding tips, such as the effective use of inner classes for event handling, proper object-oriented design, etc.

As if that all wasn't enough, the second half of the book presents a very useful library of custom components that extend the AWT. The source code for this library is on the CD, and the book explains much of the source in detail. This section is also very valuable in learning to understand the AWT.

In a world full of mediocre, inaccurate Java books, this one is a JOY to read ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars As of Feb 2009 dated but still provides a good introduction to basics of animation technique
As of February 2009 this book is dated in terms of discussion of hardware and software platforms. As it was published in 1997 this is no surprise. Where the book does have some value, however, is in its discussion of animation techniques and method. The chapters covering these still are very relevant and, more importantly, they provide very good coverage of the topics. They do this, though, at only a beginners level. If you are interested in more than an introduction these chapters will not be for you. This is quite ironic as the subtitle of the book is "from starting up to standing out".

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent beginner's/intermediate guide
This book was an excellent starting point for me.The examples used are software neutral enough to be used on any plaform. This book is a wonderful resource and reference, I find myself always referring back to it for definitions and examples.A must have for the beginner as well as the professional.

2-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Fundamentals
This is the book I had been looking for a long time. Most 3d Software Manuals or tutorials tell you how to do something. But, this book explains why. It also explains the differences in software concepts: Ray tracing vs. scan rendering, surfaces vs. meshes, the different types of textures, and the different ways to apply them. Lighting & camera utilization. A must for every 3d artist.

4-0 out of 5 stars Work through it and your an instant 3D artist!
I don't usually rave about generic books like this but I'll make an exception. No matter what programme you are using to generate your little 3D gems, this book will give you a focussed step-by-step intro to doingalmost anything that you need to provide professional results.Completethis book, pick up a few more on photorealistic techniques and change yourname to George Lucas!

4-0 out of 5 stars A great book with a useless CD.
I had to choose between this book and the one by Michael O'Rourke. I chose this one because of the CD. But the CD is useless except for some sample files because it contains demos of some old applications and it's notworking well in my computer. ... Read more
