Product Description
British architecture is experiencing an unprecedented period of vibrancy and international recognition. This book puts the current range of design trends in Britain in a cultural and geographic context by referring to developments in British architecture found in continental Europe and elsewhere abroad. The numerous illustrations and plans show buildings as an integral part of urban development that respond to the needs that face European and other cities at the end of the 20th century: postwar reconstruction, population growth, public transport and other pressing factors. "New Urban Environments" features spectacular examples of key urban building types designed by some 50 leading architects and engineers working in Britain and Europe, such as Foster and Partners, Richard Rogers Partnership, and Zaha Hadid. The book includes approximately 85 cultural buildings, commercial districts, transport interchanges, educational and environmental centres. Each section illustrates key projects with drawings, photographs, models and/or computer renderings and provides an overview of the site's development history.A number of comparative projects by non-British architects are described in brief, putting British architecture in a European context. Descriptive texts explain the selection criteria for each project and include reasons for the new development, design constraints and a summary of critical comments on the schemes, particular attention being paid to the environmental design aspects of the projects. ... Product Description
Most biographies of the Celtic saints are filled with legends and were written centuries after they lived. But the places where they lived and worked, generally in the more remote parts of their home or adopted countries can still be visited. Their chapels and huts are often placed in beautiful landscapes: sheltered valleys, sacred springs, peaceful lakeshores, sea caves, headlands and offshore islands. Archaeology, the study of sites and place-names, inscribed stones, and early texts can bring us closer to how these men and women lived and to the unique ideals they held. Elizabeth Rees, using this archaeological and literary evidence, has produced a guidebook to major sites in the British Isles where the Celtic saints lived and worked: Brigid and Patrick in Ireland, David in Wales, Columba in Scotland, and Aidan in Northumbria are among those who have left monasteries and hermitages, chapels and holy wells dedicated to them. The 250 sites examined here are listed alphabetically by area, with some fifty described in Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, and the rest of Britain.Accurate descriptions are given, with a history of each site, directions how to find it, and, where relevant, useful directions such as sailing times or where to find the key. A final section gives an outline of the lives of the saints with whom these places are associated. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Celtic Sites and Their Saints - Like a Travel Guide
It reads like a travel guide and offers obscure information regarding many obscure sites, monastic settlements, and churches. The author often describes prominent topographical, botanical and animal life in particular areas adding that touch of realism the detached reader often misses. I was impressed with how many holy sites and saints have been in use as pilgrimage sites since the early middle ages and how many more are still in existence. Some settlements have their origins with Roman and Romano-Britain foundations and military installations. Another impression was left as she described certain high crosses or cross slabs which were bi or even tri lingual. One in particular had Celtic Ogham, Norse Runes, and Latin all inscribed on different parts of the cross illustrating the truly catholic nature of Christ's Church. Do not expect more than quick overviews, but you may use the book as a valuable resource for gaining direction for further studies. The last part is a collection of very short biographies of many Celtic Saints. Again, very valuable for quick reference and making connections for further research. ... Read more

Product Description
As archaeologists, our engagement with our subject is shaped by the excavations we have worked on, and the other archaeologists we have encountered along the way. But the world of archaeology has changed dramatically over the past twenty-five years, not least in becoming a profession. Some argue that the fun has gone out of archaeology, and that the 'great excavations' of the past no longer exist for us to participate in and for future generations of budding archaeologists to look forward to. This collection of essays, deriving from a session at the Institute for Archaeologists annual conference in 2007, touches on that debate. Yet its main focus is on documenting great excavations of the past, assessing what made them great and why they persist in the memory and folklore of archaeologists today. It is, as one of the authors states, an archaeography. It is also a social history of our profession and one that should stir memories and dispel (or corroborate) some urban myths of which younger archaeologists may be aware. An impressive list of authors and projects make this a significant contribution to the history and development of British archaeology over the course of the twentieth century. Fifteen chapters describe specific projects, from Danebury to the Brieddin, from Howe to West Heslerton; six further chapters provide a thematic overview, covering early excavations, the IfA, English Heritage and the commercial sector. Lavishly illustrated, this is a book that will provoke memories and stir debate. ... Read more

Product Description
Cultural and historical attractions are some of the principal motives generating tourism trips and this has spurred the growth of a large heritage industry. However, the character and behaviour of such tourists and their social and economic impact on their destinations is as yet little understood. Richard Prentice presents a detailed analysis of heritage tourism by understanding the way the benefits gained from visits to attractions are consumed. This exploration into the nature of the heritage "product" calls into question the terminology used to define this aspect of the tourism industry, and Richard Prentice argues that it is all too easily regarded as a homogenous industry when in fact it covers diverse attractions which serve diverse tourism and leisure markets. A more sensitive approach to such questions as the promotion of these attractions, their retailing role, their sustainability and their educational impact is needed within the industry. In order to achieve this Richard Prentice shows that demands of tourists, their socio-economic background and the decision-making processes involved all have implications for the management and marketing of tourism. ...
