Product Description
In 1831 Old London Bridge was demolished following the construction of Sir John Rennie's replacement structure. Begun in 1176, it was the first stone bridge to have been erected across the Thames and until 1763 it had boasted a famous parade of shops and houses on either side of a narrow thoroughfare. Throughout Europe whole communities were supported by such habitable bridges. The last bridge of this type to be built in Britain was Pulteney Bridge constructed in Bath in 1773. This work examines the contribution that habitable bridges have made to city life from the Middle Ages to the present day. The history and construction of major inhabited bridges in Europe, the Middle East and America are discussed in detail. In Europe these include Old London Bridge, the Ponte Vecchio in Florence, Venice's Rialto Bridge and the Pont de Notre Dame in Paris. One section of the book is devoted to presenting the seven shortlisted entries in a competition to design a habitable bridge for London, spanning the Thames from Temple Gardens on the North Bank to the area in front of London Weekend Television building in the south.Among the entries is one by Daniel Libeakind, originator of the "boiler house" proposal for the extension to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Four pages are accorded to the winning entry in the competition. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide.Wonderful easy to follow maps
I have found this to be the must useful guide I have when I visited a number of these battlefields. You are given a small introduction to eachbattle. They are well written but brief. the great contribution of thisbook are the maps. Modern Ordance Survey maps showing modern roads andfeatures are in gray, the battlefield and troop positions are overlaid onthe modern map in color. The maps are easy to read and make following thetroop movements and actions possible. The book also provides a decentcatalog of major military events in England.I wish Smurthwaite and histeam wouldproduce a similar work on a single conflict or even better, produce this type of guide for the United States. If you visit thebattlefields of Great Britian this book is almost a must. ... Product Description
Heritage Interpretation is an essential guide to present practice and policy concerning issues in Heritage Management. The UK has an international reputation for the excellence of its heritage interpretation. During the 1980's and 1990's the UK developed innovative public presentation of heritage sites in the increasingly competitive cultural tourism market. UK heritage organizations developed ideas pioneered by the US National Park Service in the 1960's and applied these to cultural heritage sites.

This volume draws on this accumulated expertise to describe and analyze best practice in heritage interpretation with the UK. The contributors are all responsible for developing best practice in a range of heritage organizations, such as English Heritage, National Trust Historic Scotland, Cadw and National Parks. Looking at subjects from Public Art to 20th Century military remains and from Cathedrals to Urban Heritage, the contributors discuss the bewildering range of interpretive options available to them and how these can be sensitively and appropriately tailored to specific places and specific audiences. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Nifty book on riddles of Britain
Not an in-depth study, but still loaded with information, this is an over view of the riddles presented by Britain that goes well beyond scratching the surface.A wonderfully researched book covering stone circles and henges, but looks past to less covered questions, giving equal time to many other perplexities confronted when we look into Britain past.

Full of B+W photos, the book starts with Tombs and cairns -small and large, with a section devoted to Salisbury Hill and it's amazing construction. At the end - as with all chapters - it gives you prime examples of what the chapter covered with Places of Interest, listing specific directions and abrief description of why that spot is worth visiting.

The Next Section is the Vanished Wildwood, and written so well, that it was completely fascinating, discussing the trees that no longer could be found on British soil.It shows the influences of the changes in clime and the medieval need for wood nearly saw their destruction.A nice section of ancient woodcutting shows many trees. It goes on to Stone circles, and while there a many books more thorough on the subject, this is still a wonderful introduction to them. After stone circles, it moves to the ancient hillfortresses, then in natural progression - the homes of ancient man.

Also covered are the Chalk engravings such as the Westbury White Horse.Scotland's riddles are given several sections with Pictish Stones, followed by the fascinating brochs and even the more mysterious - the vitrified fortress. It touches boundaries and barriers, such as Hadrian's Wall and Devil's Dyke, finally to the end of the dark period as Christians came unto the pagan land, discussing the oldest churches surviving in the Isles.

A wonderful book for people wanting more than just a picture book.Especially recommended to travellers looking to know a bit more about Britain before a visit. ... Read more
