Product Description
Demonstrating the intellectual excitement that is the practice of history at its best, Paul Conkin's The New Deal is still one of the best known titles in the very popular American History Series, edited by John Hope Franklin and A. S. Eisenstadt.

The New Deal, Third Edition is still the best succinct and coherent description of a chaotic period. It is an account of the major domestic policies adopted during the Roosevelt administration. It is also a rich portrait of Roosevelt the man and consummate politician, and the satellite figures around him. This highly interpretive text, with its spirited and often subtle assessments of New Deal personalities and programs, will continue to bring the period to life for new generations of students. Includes extensive photo essay. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One Man's Viewpoint
The other reviewer's a goof, Conkin's view was that the New Deal was a poor solution to a desperate period. He offers many criticisms and kind of contradicts himself. Like many of the New Left critics, he expects contemporaries to have foresight as keen as his hindsight.

That said, he also has a good understanding of people and history, which outshines his blatant disliking of FDR.

Good intro to a confusing subject. Unintentionally funny at times too.

Also he specifically says that FDR was NOT PRAGMATIC.

2-0 out of 5 stars I just did not like it
I was required to read this for a 20th century america class.I would not recommend it.

It is written in the viewpoint that the New Deal was what saved America from the Depression. It offered little criticism and failed to show the numerous unintended consequences which resulted from the New Deal (during the immediate time).

It did say, however, that FDR was pragmatic - so they got that one right.

I am sure there are better books out there.I would recommend "No Ordinary Time." ... Read more

This is one of the best books I've seen about the Depression. It is made up of a bunch of articles by historians and other experts, some of whom were alive during the Depression. It has a lot of information about the causes of the Depression, how Roosevelt tried to deal with it, and how some of his programs seemed to work while other ones didn't.A very useful book for students or anybody who is interested in American history. ... Product Description

During a twelve-month period in 1930 and 1931, Edmund Wilson wrote a series of lengthy articles which he then collected in a book called American Jitters: A Year of the Slump. The resulting chronicle was hailed by the New York Times as "the best reporting that the period of depression has brought forth in the United States," and forms the heart of the present volume. In prose that is by turns dramatic and naturalistic, inflammatory and evocative, satirical and droll, Wilson painted an unforgettable portrait of a time when "the whole structure of American society seemed actually to be going to pieces." The American Earthquake bookends this chronicle with a collection of Wilson's non-literary articles—including criticism, reportage, and some fiction—from the years of "The Follies," 1923–1928, and the dawn of the New Deal, 1932–1934. During this period, Wilson had grown from a little-known journalist to one of the most important American literary and social critics of the century. The American Earthquake amply conveys the astonishing breadth of Wilson's talent, provides an unparalleled vision of one of the most troubling periods in American history, and, perhaps inadvertently, offers a self-portrait comparable to The Education of Henry Adams.

Product Description
"My friends, I want to talk for a few minutes with the people of the United States about banking." So began the first of Franklin D. Roosevelt's famous Fireside Chats, which came on the heels of his decision, two days after his inauguration, to close all American banks. During this address, Roosevelt used the intimacy of radio to share his hopes and plans directly with the people. He concluded by encouraging Americans to "tell me your troubles." Roosevelt's invitation was unprecedented, and the enormous public response it elicited signaled the advent of a new relationship between Americans and their president. In this indispensable book, Lawrence W. Levine and Cornelia R. Levine illuminate the period from 1933 to 1938 by setting each of the Fireside Chats in context and reprinting a moving selection of the letters that poured into Washington from an extraordinary variety of ordinary Americans. In his foreword, Michael Kazin examines the achievements and limits of the New Deal and the reasons that FDR remains, for many Americans, the exemplar of a good president. He also highlights the similarities of the 1930s to our era, with its deep recession and a new progressive administration in the White House. ... Read more
