3-0 out of 5 stars Sure, go ahead and buy this book....
I found the book to be informative, however, I am not impressed with the style of writing. It does not have a nice flow to it.In some instances, it is choppy and unclear. Also, being that this is a book on ancient Greece, the author should have consistently used the Greek God's names and not the Roman. I did not like having to change the names myself and improve upon the writing style as I read aloud to my children. But, over all it is a decent book; and I do recommend it along with the student guide and teacher guide to "Famous Men of Greece."

2-0 out of 5 stars Did anyone edit this edition?
I have an earlieredition of this book, which I think is great.I ordered a second copy here recently, and there's a major, major publishing error in this edition. No numbers are included in the book! For instance, it will say something like, "Pericles lived from ___ to ___ B.C." Or "Sparta was able to marshall ____ fighting men, but Athens could recruit only ____.There are no Arabic numerals anywhere in the book though numbers that are spelled out do appear. So, somehow it went to press without the numbers being inserted.Don't buy it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not factually correct!
In the section on the Greek gods, the author gives them their Roman names. He calls Zeus Jupiter. Quite a blunder.

5-0 out of 5 stars Famous Men of Greece
This work is part of the "Famous Men" series brilliantly done byGreenleaf Press. Each book has a focus of a particular time period withshort biographies, and stories of those times. Some are legendary, but manyof the legends do have basis in fact. We are not full-fledged historians, either by academic training or career pursuit, but have found these booksto be a thrill to define the culture and thought of the time period. Theprimary challenge has been to keep the books in hand, as the kids love themand "borrow" them. It is fun since the stories are short and canbe acted out, or built with Legos, or enjoyed in any learning style. Theyare also easy to use, with questions for each lesson which you can discuss. For younger children(3rd-6th grades)it is a new experince, olderchildren(7th-12th grades) like the adult style of learning via discussion. In our experience, it can be helpful to get the small group of books thatcomes each "Famous Men" book, which will give you moreinformation (and neat things to do)in that time period. Each book is a treatboth visually and in the text. ... From the supplier: A study was conducted on Greek students to determine their views concerning the ideal physical education class environment. Their views revealed that they learn best in environments where the teacher initiates both mastery and performance of a skill. Furthermore, teachers' involvement in mastery orientation tends to influence them to treat both boys and girls equally during their physical education classes.

Chapters: Socratic Method, the Clouds, Gymnasium, Ephebia. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 50. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Clouds ( / Nephelai) is a comedy written by the celebrated playwright Aristophanes lampooning intellectual fashions in classical Athens. It was originally produced at the City Dionysia in 423 BC and it was not well received, coming last of the three plays competing at the festival that year. It was revised between 420-417 BC and thereafter it was circulated in manuscript form. No copy of the original production survives and scholarly analysis indicates that the revised version is an incomplete form of Old Comedy. This incompleteness however is not obvious in translations and modern performances. The Clouds can be considered not only the world's first extant 'comedy of ideas' but also a brilliant and successful example of that genre. The play gained notoriety for its caricature of the philosopher Socrates ever since its mention in Plato's Apology as a factor contributing to the old man's trial and execution. Short summary: Faced with legal action for non-payment of debts, Strepsiades, an elderly Athenian, enrolls his son in The Thinkery (the "Phrontisterion") so that he might learn the rhetorical skills necessary to defeat their creditors in court. The son thereby learns cynical disrespect for social mores and contempt for authority and he subsequently beats his father up during a domestic argument, in return for which Strepsiades sets The Thinkery on fire. Detailed summary: The play begins with Strepsiades suddenly sitting up in bed while his son, Pheidippides, remains blissfully asleep in the bed next to him. Strepsiades complains to the audience that he is too worried about household debts to get any sleep his wife (the pampered product of an aristo...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=157337 ... Read more

Product Description
The book concludes that Aristotle's views yield a compelling argument for the claim that public supervision of education is a necessary condition for a just society. It examines the implications and limitations of that argument, including particularly the form and substance of the educational equality which it demands. Contrasting it with other recent arguments for educational equality, I conclude that it provides the most decisive argument for educational equality available, but also that it does not establish a legitimate basis for a state monopoly on the provision of schooling, and for ensuring its availability to everyone. Some privatization schemes, but not others, would be compatible with this result. ... Read more
