5-0 out of 5 stars Reads Like Interesting Story
I wanted to know something about this exotic country and this book taught me a lot. The author has not only extensive knowledge of the region but also a love for people of Papua New Guinea.
The book is very informative about different aspect of the history and culture, nature and it is full of beautiful pictures. I wish the map of the region at the end was a bit larger. Besides that it is a very nice books which talks about people of New Guinea, some of them were not aware of the outside civilization until... 1930-es. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
The authors challenge earlier analyses of Highlands societies of Papua New Guinea that have concentrated on gendered antagonism, taboos, and male domination. Drawing copiously on courting songs, ballads, folktales, and myths, they display the emotional sensibilities of the people and the importance of female spirits to their imaginative lifeworlds. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Guineas," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Guineas in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Guineas when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Guineas, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Papua New Guinea--a country that shows great diversity in a small geographical area--constitutes a unique and fascinating laboratory in which the impact of variety on a human population can be studied. For example, more than a quarter of the world's languages are found there among less than four million people. It can be regarded as a small "cosmos" in which complex interrelationships can be studied within a connected whole. This revealing book describes the human biology of Papua New Guinea. Additionally, studies of the geography, demography, social anthropology, linguistics, and human genetics of the country are presented. These studies are linked to biomedical and epidemiological research. The results are of wider significance and will be of interest to those working in human biology and biomedicine elsewhere in the world. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This work addresses the global-local tension evident in much work on development issues, through the example of fresh food markets in Papua New Guinea. A key feature of the book is the author's interweaving of theoretical constructs with a detailed ethnography of marketing networks, at the rural village and the urban market-place, as well as in the "spaces in between". It shows the rural community not as an isolated universe, but as consisting of dynamic linkages and networks which extend way beyond the locality. At the same time, local actors with their own agendas and interpretations of the meta-narrative of "development" are shown to be crucially important for shaping the outcome of the market integration process. This work is of relevance to geographers, anthropologists, sociologists and economists dealing with development issues. It is also a useful read for Oceanianists/Melanesianists as it tackles processes and problems, which few ethnographers, who have worked in Papua New Guinea, have made their central concern. The book is suitable for courses in development studies, geography and human ecology, and Oceanic studies, at advanced undergraduate or postgraduate level. While it deals with complex theoretical issues, it is written in a clear and accessible language. This makes the book suitable for those outside of academia, for instance in government or international agencies, who work with rural development issues and design and monitor development projects. ...
