5-0 out of 5 stars Great rabbit book for newbies
This is one of the better pet rabbit books that has been published recently. It is very well balanced, simple to read, and very informative about keeping rabbits. It covers all aspects of rabbit onwership, from rescue, to breeding and showing. I would recommend this one for any pet owner, rescue worker, or breeder.

There is also a great section on rabbit behavior and behavior problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Well Written Comprehensive Look at Rabbit Behavior
A good thorough book on rabbits for the avid reader, of which I'm one. As a rabbit owner, I've bought many books on bunnies and they all have their own certain charm. However, what really makes this one stand out is its smooth flowing writing style that makes me feel like I'm reading a book. The book doesn't really have lists, contact charts or excessive photos. It simply addresses a problem in an understanding and sometimes light comical way that makes it a can't-put-down book, which is rare in non-fiction.

This book really helped us when our rabbit starting grunting all the time when she was running around. This was sudden, unexpected behavior from her especially since she seemed healthy, happy and full of life. We found the unexpected reason for this problem inside this book, which I won't give away (you'd be very surprised though!). We were able to act accordingly.

A good read for rabbit lovers who love to read.

Darien Summers, author of The Mischievous Hare, a children's book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Does My Rabbit . . . ?And why it doesn't . . . .
Anne McBride's book on rabbit behavior describes both the normal and abnormal in rabbit actions. It is easy to use for reference, and many common problems are arranged in alphabetical order, and even deals with wild rabbits, a bit of history, and affects on behavior as separate chapters. In all, it is a handy book for rabbit lovers and owners to use in discovering more about these unique and lovable animals.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, Informative Book On Rabbit Behavior
I read this book straight through the day I bought it, and it was a fascinating book on rabbit behavior. It was a good book to read through, and it provided a whole lot of information about rabbit behavior. I'm going to have to read it multiple times to glean all of the information it presented.

There were some things that bothered me though. Because the heart of the book, information dealing with specific rabbit behaviors and how best to deal with them, was based on letters from specific people with specific rabbits a lot of the information was too specific, and as such many, many behaviors were missing, although I suppose it would be impossible to cover all of them.

Another thing that I found difficult was that it was written from a very Brittish perspective, so some of the terms and information were at best unrelatable and at worse contridictary to the way things are in America. I suppose this is something that is rather hard to avoid considering she is in England and all the experience and research as the base of this book is from there.

All in all, this was a very good book, but for me the omissions and cultural differences lowered the book's overall appeal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Now I know why my rabbit...
Before you buy one, read up!Before you give up on a bunny, read this book! Before you know it, your bunny with be your buddy, too!My bunny and I bonded immediately but he wasn't always mindful of my rules... now I know why he needs to dig and chew and I provide alternatives for him.He has his own bedroom that has been completely bunny-proofed and is allowed in the half of the house that has no carpet. Cords are covered in cloth and he seems to leave them alone now. He is the best pet I have ever had and is as affectionate as a dog and as playful as a cat. He is litter trained, and I feed him only vegies and hay. This book helped me understand his fear of being in the open yard with me, and to expect him to chew and dig because he is a rabbit.

3-0 out of 5 stars Didn't help me...
I got this book from the library, after my shipment was canceled by the sender.I am happy I didn't pay for it, as it did not help me at all.I wanted to know why my rabbit did normal things, like running around our legs, pooing around his litterbox, ect. This book only covered major problems that people might have with a rabbit, like aggressivness, stealing food or clothes, and fear.If your bunny is fine, get it from the library. If your bunny has some issues, get it from the libary, and read how to stop it.If your bunny needs a lot of help with many issues, then I think the book would be helpful. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars its just like the other book the author wrote
i'm not to impressed its the exact same book only larger as the other book she wrote doesn't tell you anything new the history about rats is so vague i'm not impressed at all i dont know why people like the book so much i personally dont but thats just me

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST for rat companions
My grandson loves his new pet rat, Roxanne. Unfortunately, his previously also-loved rat passed into pet heaven at less than a year old. I couldn't tell him much about proper nutrition or care, or how long they may live, so I want him to be better prepared this time. Roxanne will probably also give me a kiss for this. This book is brightly illustrated, with good instructions.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Care Guide
This is the most complete and accurate guide to caring for pets rats that I have ever read. It is a terrible shame that it has been allowed to go out of print. It is an indispensible reference for new and experienced rat owners. Nutrition, training, history, health...it's all here, along with some really cute photos.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super book!
This is just about the best rat book I have ever seen!I really think it deserves 6 stars, but that wasn't an option. :-)It is a exelent beginner's book, but even the most experienced rat owner can learn somthing from it.I only dissagree with Mrs. Ducommun on one point- she says to use 1x1 1/2 inch mesh for a cage. This is too big- a rat could get it's head stuck!Other then that, everything you need to know about rats is in here. The book also gives good information about breeding and showing your rats.A must-read!<:8)~

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
I concur with the other reviews in this space. It really is an excellent guide, and the author's website...is also quite helpful.I am truly impressed by the detail of this book, which still maintains an easy reading level (so it's suitable for kids in the 9-12 range right on up to grownups) and an attractive layout. In addition, the author states that she is willing to help *you* with any rat questions or problems and gives her contact information, including phone number! That's dedication!

Some day, I hope to get hold of a copy of her Rat Health Care booklet, but for now this book remains my ratty Bible. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mandatory reading for anyone caring for rabbits
I volunteer in a rabbit filled animal shelter and this book covers almost every issue that comes up even in young rabbits.Worth every penny.I am going to get a 2nd copy to donate to my local library too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Give a copy to your vet for Christmas
As a rabbit rescue I thought I pretty much knew everything when it comes to rabbits. Majority of the rabbits I take in are sick or injured so my vet and I have learned together.

But even I learned a few new tricks. The chapter on medications is worth the cost of the book by it's self. I'm going to give a copy to my vet, I have the feeling even he could learn a thing or two from this book..

3-0 out of 5 stars good book for beginners--very basic
This book was great when I got my chin.I consulted it all the time for very basic information. However, it does not have enough info on illnesses. It is simple and easy to understand but I definitely recommend getting an additional book for more detailed info.

2-0 out of 5 stars good pictures, short on information, poor housing suggestion
The barrons book on chinchillas is a very short beginner book that has nice pictures. However, the book has little more than just the barest of information, nothing on diseases, and very little other than general information. The suggested cage is constructed of wood and since chinchillas are chewers, it is a poor choice of frame for a chinchilla cage, although it would work for a rabbit. 4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Basic Book - But Stick With Donna Anastasi
First off, I've read MANY of Sue Fox's books, and I find absolutely no fault with her research or presentation. As a small animal vet, I give her opinions great weight. That being said, my issue is with TFH and other "pet care" books affiliated with the pet food and product industry... specifically, the placement of easily identified products in photographs, even if those products are not the best items for the featured pet.

In two of the Animal Planet pet guides, for example, there are written sidebars or paragraphs "debunking" the issue of pine and cedar bedding.Fueled by the wood producers, these try to convince first time owners that there is no hard science proving that phenols from softwood shavings cause lung damage in small pets. This is patently false - see a paper written by a doctoral student here:

http://www.ratfanclub.org/pine&cdr.html

No legitimate breeder or rescue will recommend softwood bedding - not only for the risk of lung damage to the small pet, but because it can also carry in parasites such as mites much more readily than paper bedding (though this is largely the case when the producer is not one of the "big name" bedding producers).

When an author's work is edited or revised to align with pet industry interests, it is an insult to the author - again, Sue Fox is a wonderful writer and her work is largely VERY good advice. Also, due to the fact that she is a veterinarian and writes about a large variety of species, she is not able to specialize in any one - whereas Donna Anastasi, author of GERBILS, is president of the American Gerbil Society.I'd suggest reading both books together, and pulling the best information from that cumulative effort. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Dwarf Rabbits Complete Pet Owner's Manual
This slim book offers a surprising amount of valuable and practical information. I love the great ideas and photos of how to set up an adventure playground, and how to provide plenty of activities to keep your rabbit happy.Really this book is fantastic for any rabbit owner, not just those with dwarf breeds. As a gardener I also love the table on page 33 which outlines the type of plants (including twigs)which can be offered to your rabbit, and which plants to avoid.
Plenty of helpful, practical and creative tips(and great photos) to ensure the health and well being of your pet rabbit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should definitely read before getting a dwarf bunny
The book's design and photos are very pleasing (& very cute!).The author offers much useful and easy to understand advice. If you're looking into getting a bunny or just became an owner of one, I highly recommend this book because it will make you & your bunny's lives easier. It gives you tips on how to bond with your bunny, what to do and what NOT to do with him/her.I made the mistake of not having read this book before raising my bunny.I did things that I thought were completely normal to do (I have 2 very small dogs & have had many animals before) but were totally inappropriate when it comes to rabbits.Just being caring and loving is not enough. You need to learn to care and love the right way to ensure a happy and enjoyable life for the both of you.

Product Description
If you re thinking about getting a pet but don t want a traditional animal like a cat or dog, you might want to consider getting a pet chinchilla. One of the best things about this pet is that it s so soft. In fact, it has the softest fur in the world. Chinchillas are unique in other ways, too. As with any other pet, you need to feed your chinchilla the right foods, clean its cage, and spend time playing with it. Are you convinced you d like one of these animals as your pet? 5-0 out of 5 stars All you need to know
I am a University student studying in zoology.
Before buying my own chinchillas I went through many books, but this one in particular was the most complete.
It gave me all the basic needs in owning a chinchilla with the little extras.
It is simple and the information just sticks to you with the many images illustrated inside this book.
It encourages you to care for your chinchilla and makes you feel confident in going forward to purchase one of your own.
I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised
After this publication hit shelves, it was brought to my attention that one of my sites, The CHINformation Organization Forum (http://www.chinformation.org/forum), had been listed as a web resource. I was honored, but a bit apprehensive, knowing that most books contain incorrect and even dangerous information regarding chinchillas. Promotions of the site are great, but I did not want to be associated with a publication that had the potential of doing more harm than good.I purchased the book and read it cover to cover and was very pleasantly surprised! It could stand to have better pictures of chinchillas, since most of the chins pictured are less than ideal, and it states that introducing adult females is easier than introducing adult males, which I tend to disagree with, but it's over-all pretty well written.I would recommend this book in addition to lots and lots of online research to prospective chinchilla owners. ...
