Product Description
Championship Gymnastics represents an entirely new approach to the study and understanding of gymnastics movement. It is the only textbook on the market that bridges the gap between theory and practice. Whether you are a gymnastics performer, teacher, coach, or even a judge, this textbook seamlessly weaves together the "science" of biomechanics with the "art" of gymnastics movement.Rather than laboring on complex physics formulas, fundamental principles of biomechanics are clearly explained and presented in layman's terms. Easy to read and expertly illustrated, readers are guided effortlessly through a "conceptualization process" for developing ideal movement patterns. The book includes over 120 technical illustrations by noted artist and gymnastics coach Jim Stephenson. Gymnastics skills are described clearly and illustrated progressively to demonstrate that "similarities" in gymnastics movement patterns far outweigh "differences." As a result, seemingly complex gymnastics skills are reduced to simple, easy-to-understand patterns of motion. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Championship Gymnastics: Biomechanical Tecniques for shaping Winners
I have been involved in gymnastics all of my life. I was a gymnast as an AAU, USGF, High School and Collegiate competitor.
I am now a coach, Nationaljudge and a club owner. I read Jerry's first book 20 years ago and waited for his next one to come out. Well it is finally here. I think that it is the best book for a beginning level coach, judge or athlete to read through an elite coach, judge or athlete. Please read this one it is for all to enjoy.
Thanks Jerry for all that you have done for us. Also thanks to Jim Stevenson for the great art work.

5-0 out of 5 stars not enough stars
I've been teaching gymnastics for 20 years.I'd acquired a copy of Jerry's earlier book, "Biomechanics of Women's Gymnastics" and found it to contain clear descriptions of how certain skills should be performed, and from those descriptions constructed the mental models I've used to teach these skills.I find that "Championship Gymnastics" does an amazing job of explaining "why" a skill works - a key element in upgrading my mental models and my athletes' performance.By page 65, I decided I'd already gotten my money's worth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the time to read.
As expected, Dr. George has again produced a definitive volume of scientific as well as practical methods for gymnastics training. This new book, though technical and concise, is surprisingly not difficult reading.Special to me are the lyrical, almost poetic, quips opening each chapter and woven throughout which is uncharacteristic of a book like this. Such inspired enthusiasm must be born of a deeper affection and respect for the role this sport can play in the life and growth of a child. All in all, with quality graphics and illustrations, George has skillfully amassed a very substantial composition well suited to everyone interested in understanding the complexities of gymnastics preparation and development.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must-Read" for every Gymnastics Coach
Dr. Jerry George is one of the finest gymnastics technicians and teachers in the world. In his book Championship Gymnastics, he breaks down movement technique into key elements that allow the gymnast to go from basic to elite movements successfully. Using this book every coach will get a clear picture of what they need to teach, and what every gymnast needs to understand to perform their best. The detailed illustrations give the teacher, coach, or gymnast a clear picture of the "key" parts of a gymnastics movement (the secret to the recipe) which is often missing. This book is a must-read for anyone involved in gymnastics.

As a gymnastics coach myself for 45 years, from beginners to Olympicv level, I feel Championship Gymnastics is the best "gymnastics teaching" book I've ever read.

Product Description

This book explores, analyses, and explains divergent ideologies and practices of gymnastics in selected European nations. It reconstructs the ex- and import processes from Europe to America and determines the processes, interrelationships and transformations of these "transatlantic movements" in their new home country. The book offers a more complete understanding of the role of gymnastics and expressive movements in cultural and ideological transmission over time and identifies the impact of these concepts on American physical education, sports systems and sports cultures.

The main focus of the book lies in the two decades before and after World War I. This concentration on a specific historical epoch allows us to identify parallel, but also different developments of the various forms of gymnastics and of the transfer and implementation processes.

The volume covers the transfer and impact of German Turnen, Czech Sokol and the Delsarte system in North America. In addition, it traces the influences of French gymnastics in South America and describes the tours of the world-renowned Danish gymnastic reformer Nils Bukh in both Americas. A focus will be the "import" of gymnastics, but also on the adaption processes of these different concepts and their integration into the American culture.

This book was previously published as a special issue of the International Journal of the History of Sport.

This is an excellent bookby Headridge and Garr. It's really helpful for us coaches because it brings information and photos about procedures as well as documents for every purpose, such as parents' permission forms and others.
I do reccomend this book. Purchase it without fear, either if you are a new coach or an experienced one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for any first time coach, or long time coach that needs improvement.
I am a first time coach, and this book has been a true gift for me! Every idea is wonderful and the printable forms have been so helpful. I wish I could say more, but I have 19 girls waiting for me to begin practice right now. A practice that will be organized, consistent and well worth their time thanks to Pam's book.

Sincerely,
A Cheerleading Coach from Washington State

4-0 out of 5 stars Straight to the Top

It is not specific to the United States, so most of the suggestions, strategies and helpful hits can be used in countries outside of there (for me specifically Australia). Just starting a squad is must less daunting with the assistance of this text, as it clearly lays out an idiot-proof way to work through each step. Thanks heaps!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiration from an American hero
I met Timmy when he was the celebrity judge at the Branson Chili Cook-Off.Although he said my chili "tasted like one of his severe injures [he] incurred during the Olympics," and that it was "really bad," he inspired me to buy his book, and his book inspired me to be the man I am today.I noticed that Timmy was walking with a pronounced limp, breathing heavy and sweating profusely. When I asked him about this, he told me that he had been an Olympic "star" and that he had suffered severe injuries while competing, but came back to be a celebrity judge and motivational speaker.Frankly, he certainly wasn't much to look at, in his stained overalls and whiskey breath. So I thought his story of Olympic glory was just a product of his extreme intoxication.Boy, was I wrong.

The book is a page-turner.Without trying to give too much away, it is the story of an above-average gymnast who suffers crippling injuries during the Olympics -- twice costing the Americans the gold medal -- and who (for religious reasons) refuses medical attention. His left leg now has only one-half the size and strength of his right leg, but the size of his heart more than makes up for it.

This is about gymnastics. This is about severe injuries. This is about your gymnast friends not talking to you anymore because you cost them gold medals. This is about refusing medical attention. This is about walking with a limp. This is about a hero.

I give this book my highest recommendation.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Book is Great, but "Ouch!", my leg!
I remember dearly when Timmy won the gold for our great country. And his book on achievement delivers more of that olympic gold straight to you!Boy did I learn to achieve. However, what is not clear in the book (and I only learned when my lawsuit was dismissed), is that you can achieve in more than just gymnastics!I really messed up my leg something bad. They need to come out with a second edition that explains the message better, like in the front cover or something. Then, this book will be a "perfect 10".

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE BOOK YOU CAN'T HELP BUT READ OVER AND OVER.
I FOUND THIS STORY TO BE VERY ENTERTAINING AND MOTIVATING.I WAS INSPIRED BY TIM DAGGET'S COURAGE AND DETERMINATION.THIS IS A WELL WRITTEN BOOK AND CONTAINS MANY INTRIGUING FACTS ABOUT TIM DAGGET AND GYMNASTICS ... Read more

Product Description
After 47 years behind the camera Walter Iooss Jr. can't quite put a number on the countless sports subjects he has photographed throughout his career. But whoever the portrait, whatever the setting, a common theme runs through his personal archive: All are athletes lured into the joy of sport. In a 256-page panoramic collection, Iooss handpicks more than 150 of his classic images--dozens never before published--to create a cinematic compilation of his work.

For Iooss--whose efforts have graced the cover of Sports Illustrated nearly 300 times--every picture really does tell a story. Here he highlights his favorites with behind-the-scenes anecdotes. For the famous "Blue Dunk" overhead shot of Michael Jordan taken in 1987, Iooss personally painted the parking lot, stationed himself in a cherry picker and waited for the shot. While shadowing Tiger Woods from hole to hole in Carlsbad in 2000, the photographer purposefully wore dark glasses the entire day so as to not look in the golfer's eyes. And in 2003, Iooss literally couldn't sleep the night before reuniting Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier for their first photo together in 30 years. In a lyrical display, we witness a creative evolution as Iooss continually discovers new ways and approaches to capture the athletic spirit. Iooss's passion, power and perspective are clearly at play in this artful package. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Heavy Waste of Space but Great Photographs
This is the kind of cumbersome coffee table book you thumb through once and then ignore for the rest of your life. The photography is great, and my husband the sports nut appreciated receiving it, but it honestly got packed into a trunk when we moved, and I didn't realize it was missing until I emptied the trunk 8 months later. It's heavy. It gets in the way of the piles of junk mail that collect on surfaces. Our shelves are too flimsy to hold it. Paper covers on hardback books rip, and the tattered look makes you like it even less.It also collects fingerprints. This book might save my life some day when I need to bludgeon an intruder.Until then, it collects dust.
