Extractions: I frequently score essays for a company that processes the state assessment tests that are becoming so common all across the United States. I have scored essays from nearly every grade level, from third grade right up to and including high school. One thing that I have noticed is that at all levels, most students have deplorable penmanship. It is often a struggle to make out one word out of five in any given essay. Some essays are so entirely indecipherable that they must be flagged as unscoreable. This problem is not confined to the K-12 level. As a college instructor I have also noticed a drastic decline in the legibility of my own students' handwriting. I am famous for my ability to make sense out of nearly indecipherable script, but even I am about ready to throw in the towel. More and more often I cannot begin to guess what my students' scribbles are intended to represent. A little over a year ago a student said that I was the only one of her college instructors who would accept handwritten essays, and she thanked me profusely for that policy. Like many students, she could not afford her own computer, and she often had to go to the computer center alone late at night to type out a paper for another class. Since she also could not afford a car, every late-night trip to the relatively isolated and poorly lit location of the computer center was a terrifying adventure. Campus security is not great at KU, and many womenand even one young manhave been raped on this campus over the years.

"I'm sure you're tired of hearing me say that, but I wish I could write like you." I explained to the clerk that if she had lived in the 19th century, she would have written the way I do. At one time, the handsome Spencerian script that graced the manila envelope had been the most common form of handwriting in America. I did not come by this skill naturally; in fact, my college roommate once described my former handwriting as a scrawl. Classified By 'Hand' In 18th-century England, there was no standardized way of writing script. Penmanship books of the era illustrated many "hands." (The page at right is from George Bickham's "The Universal Penman," published for businessmen in 1743.) Each style was reserved for a specific occupation, gender, or class. Many of the styles were derived from the native Gothic script of the Middle Ages, but a new set of hands had also arrived from Renaissance Italy. Italic was used mostly for Latin texts; the British Exchequer demanded that the pipe-roll hand (a Gothic script) be used; merchants soon adopted a strip-ped-down version of Italic, considered a masculine hand.

When I talk to customers about handwriting, I generally recommend a handwriting book for the time they are learning to print and then again when it is time to learn cursive. Why? You are teaching handwriting every time you notice that a letter is made incorrectlyyou say, "Let's make that letter like this!" And then you show the child how to do it a better way. I always ask the child to write a couple for practice. NOT a whole line or page, no, just a couple of the letters or word. Then I put a little heart or star on the best one. If the child makes a fantastic/perfect letter or word, I question them (it's a joke!), "Did I make this letter or did you?" They always think that's hilarious and TRY even harder to make nicely shaped letters. There are two aspects to learning cursive: the new shapes and the connections. Learning the new shapes is the less difficult for most children. Connections usually cause the problem. IF you have used a cursive book and the student isn't getting it, I would recommend making a special notebook with 26 pages. Fold each page in half lengthwise to make two columns.
