On October 16, 1859, an armed band of abolitionists led by John Brown attacked the arms arsenal of Harper's Ferry (then located in Virginia). The two-day raid was intended to help create an independent stronghold of freed slaves in the mountains of Maryland and Virginia. However, Brown and his band of sixteen whites and five blacks were overwhelmed by federal troops. Professor Theresa Leininger-Miller will speak at 7 p.m. in Crisp Hall Room 125 in honor of Black History Month. Her lecture will focus on the work of African-American artists in the period now known as the Harlem Renaissance - a time when authors, musicians and artists focused on African-American identity, culture and history. The term "Harlem Renaissance" is generally applied to a number of African-American writers, artists and musicians active in New York and other cities during the 1920s and 1930s, said Dr. Stanley Grand, director of the University Museum. Following the lead of W.E.B. Du Boiswhose milestone book The Souls of Black Folk (1903) rejected unflattering 19th-century stereotypes of African-Americansmany of the emerging talents associated with the "Harlem Renaissance" promoted the ideal of the educated, cultured and sophisticated "New Negro."

The story follows these artists via their early exposure to European art and genre paintings and respectfully following these rules in their learned crafts. Later, there is a fusion shown, using the European, African, and American cultural context in these artists' works. The exhibit is a visual presentation, along with historical text covering the early and recent achievements of these artists involved in the Visual Arts. Over 60 personalities are on display with biographical facts and information. Many examples of their creations are also represented.
