Introduction Sounds Links Technical notes/Kudos These samples are each approximately fifteen seconds long, files of about 300K, dubbed from compact discs. The "CD info" links each go to an appropriate entry at another site where you may learn more about or purchase the disc. In some cases, they also have better sound samples from these albums, using RealAudio or other formats. These sound samples (all in stereo) are of reasonable quality but are certainly not great: they do not represent accurately the sound quality of the recordings. They are here primarily for use in rough comparisons among the instruments: the basic features of the sound. The actual instruments sound quite a bit different, especially regarding high harmonics. If possible, play and listen to representative instruments in person, or find these and other similar recordings. On the plus side, all these samples are distorted similarly by the CD-sampling utility I used...it's a level playing field. The utility was an early one (1996), and I probably should remake all of these samples someday....

The modern harpsichord derives from several historical periods and a number of countries; nevertheless, every harpsichord or virginal works the same way. When a key is pressed, its far end rises a slip of wood called a jack. The jack is fitted with a plectrum of bird feather or plastic, which plucks the string. The string vibrates and transmits its energy to the soundboard, which vibrates in response, creating pressure waves in the air around it. These waves are transmitted to your ears, and through a complex mechanical and neurological process your brain converts that energy into the incomparable glittering, majestic sound of the harpsichord. A harpsichord is more than simply an instrument upon which you make music; it is also a decorative object, a visual as well as an aural feast. The decoration of our instruments is based on the best of the antiques, seeking not to copy them as much as to recreate their baroque and early classical motifs. Extractions: A Message from the President of SDHS Just several years ago, a group of harpsichord enthusiasts met to discuss the possibility of forming a society that would bring together harpsichord owners, builders, and performers with the purpose of promoting public interest in harpsichords and early music. We had no idea how successful our efforts would be. Indeed, there were concerns about whether enough people in the area would have the interest to support such a group, and whether these people could even be found. We soon discovered, however, that there are many people in the San Diego area who have built or own harpsichords, or who just enjoy listening to harpsichord music whether they are performers or not. These are the people who would attend harpsichord concerts and are serious enough to seek us out and join our organization. Due to such enthusiasm, SDHS has a growing membership, a Newsletter and a steady stream of concerts. Details of these will appear regularly on these pages and in the Society's Newsletter. Extractions: Introduction to the Harpsichord and Clavichord Two types of stringed keyboard instrument were available to the household or court musician from the 16th century to the middle of the 18th: the harpsichord and its near relations, the spinet and virginal; and the clavichord. In the harpsichord family the string is plucked by a small plectrum, originally of quill but nowadays usually Delrin. The variety of sound from these plucked instruments is achieved not primarily by finger pressure, but more subtly by phrasing and articulation. Variety of tonal colour can be obtained, on a harpsichord in particular, by judicious choice of registration. The harpsichord was used both for solo performance and accompanying in chamber groups and in larger ensembles of the period. It typically had two sets of strings per key, tuned either to the same pitch or with one set sounding an octave higher (a 4' register). On later instruments an additional device could be found, called a buff (or sometimes harp) stop to give a pizzicato effect. The registers were controlled by hand stops above the keyboard. Two manuals (keyboards) were to be found on certain larger instruments, which usually featured three sets of strings. The spinet is a smaller, domestic harpsichord normally with one string per note. Having a shorter string length, the strings often run diagonally from the keyboard in order to save space. The virginal (or virginals, the plural being equally correct) also has one string per note but here these run parallel to the keyboard. This useful domestic instrument was more popular than the harpsichord in northern Europe (particularly in England and the Low Countries) in the late 16th and early 17th centuries.

The difference is in the action, or the way the sound is produced. The harpsichord is a plucked instrument. When the key is pushed down a jack is pushed up. The jack has a quill attached (originally a bird quill, although today it is common to use a plastic substitute). The quill plucks the string, producing the sound. It is best to think of the harpsichord as a lute or a guitar with a keyboard. The first harpsichords in the 15th and 16th centuries were used to accompany solo singing. The harpsichord probably developed from the desire to have a lute-like instrument where a single player could produce a greater number of notes somewhat louder. One of the reasons the harpsichord and the piano are confused has to do with history. Although the harpsichord was already centuries old, the first piano (with a hammered rather than plucked action) was built by a harpsichord maker in 1720. Both instruments were used for a time, but with changing taste at the end of the 18th century, the harpsichord died out and the piano evolved with the industrial age of the 19th century.
