Extractions: Left to his own devices, John Adams might have lived out his days as a Massachusetts country lawyer, devoted to his family and friends. As it was, events swiftly overtook him, and Adamswho, David McCullough writes, was "not a man of the world" and not fond of politicscame to greatness as the second president of the United States, and one of the most distinguished of a generation of revolutionary leaders. He found reason to dislike sectarian wrangling even more in the aftermath of war, when Federalist and anti-Federalist factions vied bitterly for power, introducing scandal into an administration beset by other difficultiesincluding pirates on the high seas, conflict with France and England, and all the public controversy attendant in building a nation. Overshadowed by the lustrous presidents Washington and Jefferson, who bracketed his tenure in office, Adams emerges from McCullough's brilliant biography as a truly heroic figurenot only for his significant role in the American Revolution but also for maintaining his personal integrity in its strife-filled aftermath. McCullough spends much of his narrative examining the troubled friendship between Adams and Jefferson, who had in common a love for books and ideas but differed on almost every other imaginable point. Reading his pages, it is easy to imagine the two as alter egos. (Strangely, both died on the same day, the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.) But McCullough also considers Adams in his own light, and the portrait that emerges is altogether fascinating.

Bush, whose hairbreadth election was cemented by a Supreme Court decision five weeks after the ballots were cast, raised his right hand and swore the oath of the office and promised to bring civility, courage, compassion and character to the White House. Bush's wife, Laura, and 19-year-old twin daughters, Jenna and Barbara, stood with him as he took the oath, hand on the same Bible his father used in 1989. In the pageantry of the transfer of power, George Herbert Walker Bush, brushed back a tear as he stood proud witness to his son's inauguration 12 years after his own. In his 15-minutes long inaugural speech, Bush outlined his priorities, promoting what had been major campaign themes and offered a salute to his ex opponent Gore for a contest conducted with spirit and ended with grace. TECUMSEH AND THE PROPHET Tecumseh was born in 1768, near the present Xenia, Ohio. At the moment of his birth, a comet flashed low across the sky. Boy's father, a highly respected Shawnees warrior named Puckesinwa, himself the grandson of a famous chief, named his son Tecumseh, meaning Panther crossing the Sky.

Extractions: William Henry Harrison, (1773-1841), 9th PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES . The oldest president up to that time, to be inaugurated, he was also the first to die in office, surviving only one month. Harrison's Indian fighting and treaty making had secured the Old Northwest for American settlement and established the reputation that led him to the WHITE HOUSE . He was the first presidential candidate to campaign actively for office. The "Log Cabin Campaign" of 1840, in which Harrison, a WHIG , was pitted against the Democratic incumbent Martin VAN BUREN , was a spectacle of slogan and slander. Early Life Military Service After an interval of studying medicine in Richmond and Philadelphia in 1790 and 1791, Harrison decided on a military career, and on Aug. 16, 1791, he was commissioned an ensign in the First Regiment of Infantry. Although only 18, he recruited a company of 80 men, who were persuaded to hazard their lives fighting Indians in the western wilderness for $2 a month. Leaving Philadelphia in September 1791, the young ensign marched his recruits over the Allegheny Mountains to Fort Pitt (Pittsburgh), where they took boats down the Ohio River to Fort Washington (Cincinnati). Harrison remained in the Army until May 31, 1798, rising to the rank of captain. As aide-de-camp to Gen. Anthony Wayne, he was cited for bravery at the Battle of Fallen Timbers on Aug. 20, 1794, and the following year he witnessed and signed the Treaty of Greenville. He then was ordered to Fort Washington, where he served for a time as commandant.

Elected: William Harrison was born on the Berkeley Plantation in Charles City County, Virginia. Harrison grew up during the Revolutionary War, during which his home was ransacked by the British. Harrison chose medicine as his desired profession. He studied premedical studies at Hampden Sydney College. In 1791 he enrolled in the Pennsylvania Medical School in Philadelphia. Upon his arrival in Philadelphia, he learned that his father had died. He remained for a year at school, but when his money ran out he decided to join the army. Harrison fought in the Indian War in the Northwest Territories. For two years, in 1791-1800, Harrison served as the delegate of the Northwest territories to the US House. This was a non-voting position. From 1798-1799 he served as the Secretary of the Northwest Territories. From 1800-1812 Harrison served as the Governor of Indiana Territory. He was appointed to this position by John Adams. As governor, he led 300 regulars and a 650-man militia against the Indian confederacy, led by the Shawnee brothers Tecumseh and the Prophet. The Indians attacked in a pre-dawn raid near Tippecanoe Creek. The Indians were repulsed and Harrison rallied his men to an overwhelming victory. The battle earned Harrison the nickname Old Tippecanoe.

Extractions: William Henry Harrison was born in Charles City County, Va., on Feb. 9, 1773. Joining the army in 1791, he was active in Indian fighting in the Northwest, became secretary of the Northwest Territory in 1798 and governor of Indiana in 1800. He married Anna Symmes in 1795. Growing discontent over white encroachments on Indian lands led to the formation of an Indian alliance under Tecumseh to resist further aggressions. In 1811, Harrison won a nominal victory over the Indians at Tippecanoe and in 1813 a more decisive one at the Battle of the Thames, where Tecumseh was killed. After resigning from the army in 1814, Harrison had an obscure career in politics and diplomacy, ending up 20 years later as a county recorder in Ohio. Nominated for president in 1835 as a military hero whom the conservative politicians hoped to be able to control, he ran surprisingly well against Van Buren in 1836. Four years later, he defeated Van Buren but caught pneumonia and died in Washington on April 4, 1841, a month after his inauguration. Harrison was the first president to die in office.
