Extractions: Enter keyword: Jon.Reyhner@nau.edu According to Michael Krauss of the Alaska Native Language Center, there are 210 different indigenous languages still spoken by American Indians and Alaska Natives in the United States and Canada out of the over 300 spoken before the arrival of Columbus. These languages have survived suppression in boarding schools and catastrophic population declines. The question today is how much longer will these remaining languages survive. Children are no longer routinely being punished for speaking them in schools, but ironically many are not speaking them now that they can. Today, English language movies, television, and videotapes are doing what a century of washing mouths out with soap in boarding schools could not accomplish. Krauss's research indicates that only 35 of the remaining languages in the United States and Canada are still being spoken by children. When children are no longer learning a language, the language is dying.

We wish to acknowledge their efforts and the support of the following organizations in making the 1998 PBC conference a unique and exciting experience. The Pacific Islands Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL). PREL was organized in December 1990 as an independent, non-profit corporation funded by the U.S. Department of Education to serve the educational needs of the politically-affiliated entities in the Pacific region: American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia (Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei and Yap), Guam, Hawaii, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau. PREL works with schools, government and community agencies and businesses to improve educational outcomes for children, youth, and adults by providing research, training, technical assistance, group facilitation, resource information and evaluation services. PREL's approach, which is unique and a key to its success, is to work within existing cultures and administrative structures to facilitate collaborative efforts among its constituents and to build upon local resources.

Extractions: Chaminade University of Honolulu professor Jon James is living proof that one man can make a difference. Moved by compassion after a visit to southern India more than 14 years ago, he managed to raise $250,000 in four years to build an orphanage to help 72 of the world's "poorest of the poor" in India. "I was just going to raise some money and then pull out, but now I'm involved for the rest of my life," James said. "It's transformed my life and has become the most fulfilling thing, though it hasn't been easy." The journey began for James when he traveled to India for five weeks in 1988 for a Taize prayer meeting at the Jesuit campus of Loyola College in Madras. Arriving two weeks early, he stayed at the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart at the southern tip of India, called Lourde Puram, several hundred miles southwest of Madras. There, he watched the sisters and other groups work among the poor. James visited a center run by Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity and took part in several service projects. "I had never been to the third world and I was just traumatized by the poverty I saw," he said.
Extractions: Sports Our goal is to provide athletic opportunity for every student who has the desire to compete, and to help those individuals achieve their potential. CCA fields teams in cross country, volleyball, basketball, cheerleading and track, and is a member of the 280-school Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA). In past seasons, individuals and teams have won numerous league, district, and state honors. CCA's impressive collection of trophies stretches back to the 1952 boys' basketball team. More than 30 state trophies and well over 100 total trophies are housed in the newly-constructed trophy cases built by alumni. CCA is currently ranked #1 (Class 2A/1A) boys' cross country in Oregon since the inception of the sport in 1973 in an objective ranking by "Who's Who in Oregon Track."

Extractions: DATE: August 18, 2000 Dear Friends: We are on the verge of another academic year, with students and professors gathering like the sand hill cranes. I began August in Kotzebue, more specifically the Kobuk River, with Patty along with Martha Stewart (our Martha Stewart-the other one just cooks). It was great fun, lots of wildlife and a chance to meet with Gary Larson (our Gary Larson - the other one just draws) and his research effort. Scientists and students from across the country and a couple from across the world were hard at work. It was a great chance to meet researchers in the field. I was pleased to run by the camp again to deliver some fresh sheefish for their dinner. National Bureau of Asian Research I spent a couple of days in Seattle last week to talk with the National Bureau of Asian Research. I will get with Russ Howell, director of our American-Russian Center, to see if this offers UA some opportunities such as we now enjoy with the East-West Center in Hawaii. Regional Boarding Schools Several of us, Wendy, Marshall Lind, Ralph Gabrielli, Jake Poole, and others, met with several legislators at the Hutchison Career Center on Monday to talk about vocational education and a legislative project to explore the utility of "regional boarding schools." Gail Phillips, Eldon Mulder, Gary Wilken, John Davies, Gene Therriault, John Coghill, and an aide to Jeanette James were there. I think our discussion altered the direction of their first impulse. Marshall will follow the progress of this effort.
