Happy Halloween!Amazon.com Review
Cocoa Cobweb Cupcakes, Black Cat Cookies, and Stained-GlassSpooks are just a few of the spirited tastes you'll encounter inDonata Maggipinto's delightful Halloween Treats. But it's notjust recipes--you and your favorite little goblin will love creatingspooky craft projects such as Candy Cauldrons, Leaf Lanterns, andPaper Bag Pumpkins together in anticipation of All Hallows'Eve. Maggipinto includes craft ideas for "Pixies" (children 4-8 yearsold) as well as older children, and nearly every recipe includes asafe task for younger helpers. (For example, while mom or dad shouldheat the milk for hot cocoa, kids can roll and stamp out marshmallowghosts as accompaniment.) A few of the craft ideas will require a tripto the art supply store (such as lampshade paper for the very niftyflashlight lanterns), but Maggipinto leaves plenty of room for themagical combination of imagination and found objects. Her great"fanciful masks" are dime-store masks decorated with autumn leaves, candy wrappers, feathers, or anything else you might have at hand.

Maggipinto believes that Halloween festivities should last for atleast a week; you'll find enough project instructions and recipes herefor a month of Halloween fun. Grownups will love her Halloween dinnerparty menu (with Pumpkin Crackle Custard for dessert!) and kids canhelp by making corn kernel napkin rings and three-tiered pumpkincenterpieces. If you're looking for costume ideas, you won't find themhere--the book is focused firmly on kitchen and decoration fun--butthe beautifully illustrated Halloween Treats is a wonderfultreasure trove of tricks and treats that every family will enjoyworking on together. --Rebecca A. 5-0 out of 5 stars Fun book
I've collected a lot of Halloween books over the years, and some of them have been real duds. I was relieved this was not one of those. The pics are cozy, there are some fun decorating ideas, and I found the recipes creative and different. I highly recommend both the book and the seller.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute
This book is cute and has some fun ideas but not all the items have pictures and there is a lot of "adult" oriented food in there which is not why I bought it. A few cute ideas but I suggest buying it used to get your moneys worth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Pictures, Good Recipes, Fun Ideas
I have had this book for sometime now, and I always break it out for for my halloween parties. The pumpkin curry soup recipe is sooo yummy, and the pictures and crafts are inpiring! If you are in the 20-35 year old set, I would reccomend this book!

3-0 out of 5 stars More trick than treat
Some of the ideas were cute and worth trying. But, for the most part, it is not worth the money.I loved the pictures, which were the best part of the book.I plan on trying some of the ideas, but depending on the age ofyour children, it's not really a family oriented book.I lost interestvery rapidly, as did my 4 and 7 year olds.

4-0 out of 5 stars great photos, inspiring ideas
It was so hot here in AZ this fall, I needed a jumpstart to get into the Halloween spirit. This was just the book. Great photos and seasonal recipes made me run out to buy sweet potatoes for making the baked chips! Ienvisioned keeping them on hand for lunches and snacks, but they were gonein a day. The black cats were cute, too, but we all suffered with blacktongues after the fact. Plenty of other cute ideas for little ones.

Ifyou want Julia Child, don't buy this book; but if you want a holiday read, with great pictures and some nice recipes, find a notch on your bookshelffor this one. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars SAVE YOUR MONEY!NOT WORTH IT!
I am guilty for being the type of consumer that doesn't bother writing up reviews or feedback, much less taking time out of my day to do something that I don't feel is necessary. But yes, I do go out of my way to read other persons' reviews to make my decision before purchasing.
I got this book today along with "Out-of-this-World Halloween craft ideas" by KMS Publishing from here, and BOY AM I DISAPPOINTED!I wish I could return these "books" but we are stationed overseas in Asia and I already looked over both books AND felt the need to review said books! Our family LOVES Halloween, so we go out of our way to decorate and find new ideas to celebrate this time of year for family and friends.I have a very healthy collection of go-to Halloween magazines, books, and websites that I defer to over the years, so I would like to think I know what is worth good money or is just a rip-off.The book has 2 pages out of 78 of photcopy quality-like "pictures" if that is what you call it and pages 76/77 are "Halloween Coloring Pages" to xerox and pass out...I would be embarassed to even show that to my guests! No color pictures, lame ideas, and nothing new to offer that could easily be accessed online for FREE.And no, I am no way affiliated with any publisher or competiting book either.BUT I would be leary if another 'consumer' followed up with an "outstanding" review, which you can conclude is either the publisher, the author, or family relative.
So, either disregard this review and see for yourself or use your money wisely in our tough economic times. As for me, I am this close to pitching these in the trash....and that says ALOT!
Negative ZERO stars if I could.Amazon should have better screening procedures before putting "books" out like this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Halloween Party Ideas
I was looking for a book that had something about parties for teens and this one does. It also had some great ideas about what to do for your kids costumes if you are on a budget. That itself is worth it during a recession. There are also some recipes for punch and a nice one for a cake using leftover candy..very creative!

I found the book to be well written and a good buy for the price. No color photos but it has been my experience with craft books, those are in the more expensive larger books. So all in all this is not a craft book, just one on different ideas for parties with recipes included. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Make Your Own Halloween Treats
ISBN 0439282780 - A fantastic idea that just kinda-sorta doesn't cut it, Make Your Own Halloween Treats is similar to The Sunmaid Raisins Play Book and the Cheerios, Froot Loops, Goldfish, M&Ms, etc. books, but instead of using your own various food items, you use re-usable stickers. If your child's hands are spotlessly clean and dry, the stickers will survive - if not, the life expectancy of them isn't long.

On the left hand page, there is a completed image and on the right, a plain one, missing details. The reader uses "more than 35 reusable stickers" to duplicate the look or create their own.A cake, a cookie and more, require the reader to help prepare for a Halloween party.

It's a great idea, and it's one that works for those books that rely on you supplying the food.Sonali Fry's text is simple and the illustrations by Judith Moffatt are nice, bright and not scary.Halloween books for really little kids aren't something I find often enough, so I was really happy to find this one - and sad to realize it won't survive most children.

1-0 out of 5 stars Make Your Own HALLOWEEN TREATS
This book by Sonali Fry had an excellent idea of using stickers to make faces on the opposite page from one already illustrated, i.e. Halloween cupcakes, apple bobbinge, etc.The problem is that my grandson used it twice and some of the stickers are not longer sticking so the book is really useless after a couple uses.It is a great concept but needs sticker more like colorforms than regular stickers in order to make it a valuable book. ... Product Description
Most Halloween books are for kids, but here's one that adults will enjoy, too! Filled with vivid, atmospheric color photos and illustrations, The Real Halloween opens with a fascinating history of Halloween's past and changing traditions. It's an overview of the holiday from ancient times to the present, shedding light on sacrificial pagan rituals, describing the medieval autumn religious festival, and concluding with the modern secular holiday's goblins, ghosts, costumes, and trick-or-treat rituals. Part Two takes readers to the present time, putting the emphasis on fun. It's a collection of games, crafts, recipes, and treats for Halloween party time. It also includes ideas for making jack-o'-lanterns, and presents recipes for pumpkin pie that everybody will love. The book's third and final section is a whimsical look into the future, with fortune-telling methods that use autumn leaves, nuts, cakes, and mirrors. It also features directions for making several magic charms, including "love apples" to keep romantic relationships sweet. Approximately 100 full-color illustrations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great grab bag of history and ideas for Halloween
This book is an interesting collection of all things Halloween. It runs the gamut exploring the inter-related holidays from All Hallows, to the Neo-Pagan Samhain, to the secular Halloween. With a wonderful visual collection of photos & folk art, the book unveils the history and symbolism of Halloween, and how we might celebrate today. In a very practical "how to" section, the book reveals recipes, spells, games, practical jokes, and divination that all feel steeped in the history of this ancient celebration. It isn't long enough to be a scholarly resource, but for a fun read, this book is a winner.

1-0 out of 5 stars BORING
I'm not sure who the intended audience was for this book, but by trying to be something for everyone, it is in my opinion nothing at all.It doesn't have the joie de vive of "Halloween Merrymaking" by Diane C. Arkins. It doesn't have the information of "Death Makes a Holiday" by David J. Skal. And it doesn't have the Wicca credibility of "Halloween: Customs, Recipes and Spells" by Silver RavenWolf.

The pictures are dull. The 13 (how cute) recipes are printed so small that the measurements are almost undecipherable; and one of the "tricks" involves breaking empty bottles in front of someone's house so they'll think their window was broken. So every human and animal who passes by after this "trick" will track broken glass around.

And if I had to read one more poem or reference to "soul cakes" I would have screamed. At least that would have had some Halloween-y feeling to it.

Totally unredeeming book.If I hadn't paid so little for it, I would return it, but it just isn't worth my time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for adults who love Halloween
I picked this up thinking that it would primarily be written for Wiccans. It did include several of the charms and spells that I expected, including an intriguing section about making a scrying mirror. What made me buy the book, though, was the other content. It is a great source of historical and cultural information about Halloween.

I especially enjoyed the brief section on the Mexican Day of the Dead, which includes a great recipe for "bread of the dead".Another section describes how the lost tradition of carrying turnip lanterns evolved into modern jack-o-lanterns.I followed the book's instructions for making my own turnip lanterns and hung them on my front porch this year--they looked fantastic!(By the way, hollowing out the turnips is easiest using a melon baller.)Another highlight is the vampire-hunting party game.I didn't get a chance to try it this year, but I'd like to adapt it to use with my friends.

The book is full of activities, recipes, and interesting Halloween facts. The layout is attractive and includes lots of color photos, which adds to a fun read.I would recommend this to Halloween enthusiasts of any age. ... Read more
