2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I was looking forward to some great reading and fun ideas for quality crafts and stories, but what I received I almost threw away with all the fliers that Amazon sends with your order. This "book" looks like it was typed on an old typewriter, photocopied and stapled together.

I skimmed through it and then managed to read through about half of it before it disappeared. (I'm guessing it got mixed-up with other papers that were taken to the recycling center) From what I did read this "book" had very little that was new to me. I give it 2 stars only because the writer was faithful to the customs without the usual hyped-up, romantic-type ideas that tend to fill up books of this genre.

I suppose if this item has a drastic price drop, people interested in the culturally based customs of Samhain would enjoy the read, but don't have high expectations. Similar material can be found on the web with a wee bit oftime (to sort through the fluff.) ... Read more

Amazon.com
Interior designer Jill Williams Grover remembers that as a young girl, she chose her trick-or-treat visits not for what candy she'd receive but because of the front porch decorations. Obviously her fascination with Halloween continued into adulthood, and her marvelously inventive guide shows you how to turn your own home into a coveted trick-or-treating stop or the perfect place for a Halloween party. "Scary Nibbles" offers spooky snacks, like Ghost Sticks (white-chocolate-covered pretzel sticks) or Hand Full of Candy (a latex glove fitted with pointy black fingernails and filled with jawbreakers). "Enter at Your Own Risk" lets you startle your arriving visitors with blood-red footprints marching up the Poppin' Walkway (the secret is bubble wrap) and provides ideas for eerie decor, such as a witch hat luminary, masked and jeweled pumpkins, skeleton topiary, and of course, the Invisible Man. "Frightful Feast" sets forth a tablescape of ghoulish goodies, from spiderweb invitations, spider tablecloth, and bat napkins to dripping candles and Dracula's Bow Tie Pasta. "Goblin Gathering" rounds out the spooky selections with a Cyclops Mug, Frankenstein Cone Cake, and relevant place cards, place mats, and other tableware. Complete directions are given for all the projects, and there are recipes for the edibles (enough for a full-fledged Halloween dinner party). The great color photos make clear that these scary scenes are both fun and sophisticated--though kids will adore them, they'll also delight the grownups brave enough to venture into your house. --Amy HandyBook Description

Scare up a boo-tacular Halloween at your house with excellent decorations and party ideas. Shock everyone silly with nibbles from creepy containers--everyone will want handfuls of Ghost Sticks and Yummy Mummies, not to mention a Hand Full of Candy. Dare little trick-or-treaters to enter at their own risk by making a witch-hat light and flying bats--they'll get a real thrill when they see cool decorations like these. Then give them a frightful feast of Dracula's bow-tie pasta washed down with a fizzy clear drink chilled with spider ice cubes. The bat napkins and black mask candles will guarantee that the table sets a perfect Halloween mood and get all of the festivities going. An awfully good time is guaranteed for all.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Scary at all!
Having scary in the title is misleading. The book is fine for children's parties and has a few of nice ideas, but it is far from scary. However, some of the projects are too "artsie" and cute for me. If you're buying for young children's party ideas, it's a good book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Basic and boring
This book has warmed over ideas, they are nowhere close to scary. They are cutesy and meant for people who feel like Halloween isn't a "real" holiday.

4-0 out of 5 stars A cut above most
Like most Halloween craft books, this one is definitely family-friendly -- so if you want to know how to build a realistic heart that pumps blood, look elsewhere. That said, the projects in this book are definitely a cut above the average "cutesy" Halloween projects you see every year. The designs are clever, visually appealing, and easy to do.For the price, this is an excellent book.

1-0 out of 5 stars stay away from this author
I have been working in the design field for over 10 years now and I have yet to see a worse ripp off then this author not only are there no directions to her projects, but who would want to engage them selves in anything that turned out so chic and cheesey. I have personally met the author and her family I knew them for quite a while infact and never did I find that she could creatively enhance a project. she has some small skill in putting together junk so it doesn't look so much like junk. butlets face it - it's still junk. not something I would put in my house nor in my clients homes.

3-0 out of 5 stars not so scary
This book is good if you need some inspiration. There are not a lot of SCARY crafts in this book. The candy wrapper buckets are a cute idea.I also liked the black pumpkins. Some of the crafts were lame. For instance, one was called "witch hat luminary" and its made of an orange traffic cone that you spray paint black and put a light under it.Where do you find a traffic cone without stealing one?
I would reccomend it if you are looking for cute ideas for a Halloween party but it is not good for a person wanting to create a hard core scary scene. ... Read more

Amazon.com
Halloween books abound, but none is as elegantly spooky or as eerily opulent as this gorgeous guide from Martha Stewart Living. Set the scene for the ultimate Halloween party with a magical yard full of pumpkins glowing with vibrant geometrics and sparkling with Christmas lights. Welcome guests with shadow lanterns flickering with bats and haunted windows. Strew the house with chiffon ghosts and fill the air with haunting sounds. Then host a pumpkin-carving feast, a crafty party, or a ghoulish supper, and whip up eyeball highballs, croaked messieurs, and spider-web sundaes. And don't forget the creepy makeup: follow along as willing victims transform into a skeleton, mummy, and several other creatures (Martha herself becomes an astonishing black widow). Excellent directions, full recipes, beautiful photographs, and an extremely detailed source list should inspire anyone to celebrate All Hallows' Eve with style. --Amy Handy Book Description
Halloween is rivaled only by Christmas when it comes to the holidays that generate the most interest for Martha Stewart Living’s readers. Halloween is a compendium of the best Halloween ideas published in the magazine over the last decade.

To help celebrate this ghoulish holiday, the editors of Martha Stewart Living bring us Halloween, a compilation of all the best tricks and treats of the spooky season.

5-0 out of 5 stars FavoriteHalloween Craft (and more) Book!!
I found this book at my local library a few years ago. I loved it so much, I kept it until finding it on Amazon. The book has fantastic colorful pictures that get you in the spirit of Halloween no matter what time of year it is. It has fun craft ideas, spooky recipes and costume ideas for all ages.

Most of the crafts in this book are fairly easy for anyone to attempt, however you may find a few that require tools that you might not have unless you an avid Craftster.
She has a large chapter on Pumpkin carving/decorating that has ideas for children and adults. The book has a great deal of very unique Halloween crafts that are sure to impress and spook your friends and family.

As for the recipes, they aren't too difficult. I recommend "The Hot Spiced Concord - Grape Juice"(A new twist on spiced cider) "The Great Pumpkin Cake", "Ancient Eggs" and of course The Lady Finger's and Man toes. These recipes will be a hit at any Halloween gathering.

I haven't tired out any of the makeup/costume ideasyet, however they look fantastic and not very difficult. She has included the best Mummy makeup I have ever seen, and only requires everyday kitchen ingredients.
Even Martha appearsas a few frightful characters with complete how to instructions (I had no idea she was the model in a few of the photos!)

You don't have to be a fan of Martha Stewart to enjoy this book. Its filled with tons of ideas for all ages. I seriously recommend this book to anyone that enjoys DIY holiday decorating and of course the Halloween food is ...to die for! This book is worth every cent, It has been my go to Halloween craft book since 2004 and I have no intention of finding another (unless it's an update)

Happy Haunting!

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Crafty
I was hoping for sophisticated and stylish ideas for a halloween party. This was more like construction paper grade school crafts.I was very disapointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars If You Have The Time...
Excellent ideas for Halloween decorating and parties....if you have the time.Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of time on my hands so I wasn't able to use the book for this past Halloween (2006).Hopefully, I'll have more time next year, or I'll start preparing ahead of time. The ideas are clever and original and I'd like to use them. The book is of great quality, thick paper. The photos and instructions are clear and not at all confusing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Halloween fun for the family
There are a number of Halloween books out on the market for decorating, baking and costume making, but this is one of the few that actually hassomething new in it!

The crafts are clever, but actually look doable wtih things you might already have on hand. The costumes ideas are fun and innovative, the food ideas are also really cute, but not overly-complicated.While some classic ideas never die, this book puts a nice twist on things like "body parts" games.

Of course, the ideas come from the monthly magazine that Disney produces, Family Fun, and if you get the magazine, you'll have already seen alot of these things in print or on their website. Still, the book is nicely layed-out, easy to flip through and a good resource of party and costume ideas for both kids and their grown-ups.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Pleased
This book is an awesome resource for make-at-home costumes and decorations. The ideas are so cute, easy to follow, and where else can you find a recipe for slime?

Book Description
A whimsical array of ghosts and goblins, spooks and skeletons, vamps and vampires parade through this unparalleled collection of more than 100 years of American Halloween attire. From Little Bo Peep with lamb in hand to beatniks and pirates, from monsters and witches to clowns and animals, this veritable "carnival" of costumes visually captures All Hallows' Eve like no other book before.

In her celebration of Halloween revelry, photographer Phyllis Galembo never settles for the ordinary; here instead are evocative scenes of dressed-to-scare young trick-or-treaters "modeling" their disguises, of undead spirits haunting their surroundings, and of costumes spanning over a century that take on an eerie new creepiness thanks to special lighting effects. Accompanying the costume shots is a history of this always-popular holiday and an essay placing the work in the wider context of fashion and costume. Of interest to enthusiasts, designers, and students alike, this devilishly diverting book is the perfect gift for all Halloween aficionados. ... Read more
