5-0 out of 5 stars It's everything a kid could want besides a pet!
This is a wonderful book for younger children!(Older people can read it as well, but is geared toward young readers.)She presents each pocket pet well,by saying pluses and dowsides of having each.I know each pet well and obviously she does too!(I did find one slight problem in the gerbil section:this book was written a while back when gerbils only came in 1 color, brown,so of course she says they come in just that color. But gerbils these days gerbils come in tons of colors!)It includes cute pictures too!I would recommend it to anyone who has or is a small child:) ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not a Great Book
I have a guinea pig, and I love her and take care of her. But I recently checked out this book, and I thought some parts could be a little more realistic. The sections on food and guinea pig history and breeds were terrific. But I think it expects you to go a little overboard on your guinea pig. For example, when it gives you the list of cleaning supplies you need to clean your guinea pig's cage, it says, "Do not take any items that you use to clean your house," when it has things like sponges and dustpans and towels on the list. Do they mean that you're supposed to buy a new towel and dustpan just for your guinea pig? Also, the checklist at the very end was EXTREMELY unrealistic. Not very many people check their guinea pig's teeth every day. This book is OK, but I just think that some sections are unrealistic and set too high expectations for little kids.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for kids!
What I love about this book are the pictures. They are very clear and colourful. This is a very good guide book for any kid because if the kid does not know what a word refers to, there is actually a picture that showswhat the author is trying to convey. This book also includes step-by-stepinstructions (with pictures) for cleaning the cage, grooming of thecavy...

An easy-to-understand book...

1-0 out of 5 stars use book with CAUTION !

This book was not written by any " rattie " professional . It was
comprised to fit into a collection of books for AnimalPlanet.
This book contains information which could be harmful ( even fatal)
to a pet rat. AnimalPlanet HAS in fact been contacted to pull ( or
revise ) this book. Please feel confident in purchasing any 4 or 5 star
rated pet rat book that Amazon does offer. These books , as you can see
are written by rat experts and enthusiasts much to the delight and
gratitude of happy pet owners.

1-0 out of 5 stars Animal Planet Rats by Julie Mancini
This book is poorly researched and is filled with inaccuracies that could both harm and even kill....yes, kill your pet rat. Unfortunately it
was simply put out to complete a quote/unquote , PET CARE LIBRARY book series for Animal Planet. The desire to create an informative and helpful tool for "new" rattie owners was NOT the intention of this publication.
This book was finally approved for "release" this week and I just received a copy early today....I've had it for only hours now and have already contacted the executive offices at Dicovery/AnimalPlanet to bring this to their attention as I believe it was not their intention to in anyway harm pet rats. It is my belief that when this all comes to light (very soon I'm sure) that Animal Planet will themselves pull this book from distribution in an effort to escape any lawsuits and scandal that would certainly arise from any pet rat deaths directly linked to the pet care information given in this book.
Caring pet owners should feel confident in purchasing the standard
"well researched" books on rat care offered here on Amazon and locate these in accordance with their outstanding reviews and 4 and 5 star ratings. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars great pictures but a lot of inaccurate information
This is a nicely produced book - too bad it's not a good one. Large photos on every page should convince everyone of the joy of owning a pet - there are many pictures of children playing with their pets, illustrative photos of both children and adults cleaning cages, and much more.

Unfortunately, even some of the pictures contain misinformation. For example, in the section on rabbits, the daily diet paragraph of text suggests "a handful of raw cabbage or a piece of celery should be plenty." And the photo shows not only many vegetables that will cause gas, such as cauliflower, it also shows a big wedge of iceberg lettuce. As every well-informed rabbit owner knows by now, iceberg lettuce is useless nutritionally, high enough in water to possibly give your rabbit diarrhea, and leaf lettuce is a much better idea. Celery is likewise not a great idea - the strings in it have been known to get caught between teeth, which can lead to malocclusion, and some rabbits have even choked on them.

The text for rabbits also suggests "stale crusts of whole-wheat bread" for treats. And the main advice for housing is an outdoor hutch, with barely a paragraph given to keeping your rabbit indoors as a house rabbit.

Incidentally, the book was written in England, so although there appears to be an effort made to write in English that will be understandable to Americans, there are some items that are still likely to be confusing for American children: breed names for some rabbits and guinea pigs are different; food pellets are differently shaped and colored than most American brands, and so on. Also, it should be noted, the English background probably contributes to the author's preference for keeping rabbits outdoors. The climate in England does not have the extremes that the much larger North American continent has. The weather in Buffalo, NY would be far too cold to keep your rabbit in an outdoor hutch all winter, and the weather in San Antonio, TX, far too hot in the summer - rabbits would die of heat stroke. The English background also shows in the mention of chipmunks as an alternative small pet; in most of the US, chipmunks are not only not pets, but you'd need a specific wildlife permit to be allowed to keep one.

The misinformation in the guinea pig section is just as extensive as the rabbit section. Again, vegetables are recommended that are known to cause gas, or to be nutritionally useless for guinea pigs, or to have caused other problems, and although the text briefly mentions that piggies need vitamin C, there is nothing at all pointing out which veggies and fruits are high in C. The emphasis, as with the rabbits, is on keeping guinea pigs in outdoor hutches, with barely a paragraph on indoor cages.

I do not know as much about hamsters as I do about guinea pigs and rabbits, so I can't tell whether all the information in the hamster section is valid. However, the "healthy treats" section especially recommends yogurt drops - which are mainly sugar and are NOT a healthy treat for any pet, despite the "yogurt" in their name.

There are some good points about this book: the great photos showing lots of interaction between kids and their pets, perhaps the book's strongest point. And for each pet, the section on toys and play has pictures of a great variety of toys, all of them appropriate for the pet, and many of them suggestions that an inexperienced pet owner wouldn't have thought of. Every pet has a lengthy section on seeing a vet, basic healthcare, signs of illness, and when to call a vet.

It's difficult for anyone to try to write a short book that covers several animals. It's best for the potential pet owner to choose a book that is all about ONE species of pet, and contains more details about that particular animal than a scattershot book like this. I would also suggest that anyone looking for a good book on pets check the country of original publication, and look for a recent copyright date. For most Americans, although this book is brand new, copyright 2005, it does not meet the other requirements of being specific to one pet and being specifically written for US conditions. ... This guide to troubleshooting rabbit behavior clues owners in to the history of the domesticated rabbit and describes how rabbits live and breed. Common problems among rabbit owners are discussed, as are probable causes for irregular behavior, including instincts that make rabbits behave in certain ways. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Well Written Comprehensive Look at Rabbit Behavior
A good thorough book on rabbits for the avid reader, of which I'm one. As a rabbit owner, I've bought many books on bunnies and they all have their own certain charm. However, what really makes this one stand out is its smooth flowing writing style that makes me feel like I'm reading a book. The book doesn't really have lists, contact charts or excessive photos. It simply addresses a problem in an understanding and sometimes light comical way that makes it a can't-put-down book, which is rare in non-fiction.

This book really helped us when our rabbit starting grunting all the time when she was running around. This was sudden, unexpected behavior from her especially since she seemed healthy, happy and full of life. We found the unexpected reason for this problem inside this book, which I won't give away (you'd be very surprised though!). We were able to act accordingly.

A good read for rabbit lovers who love to read.

Darien Summers, author of The Mischievous Hare, a children's book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Does My Rabbit . . . ?And why it doesn't . . . .
Anne McBride's book on rabbit behavior describes both the normal and abnormal in rabbit actions. It is easy to use for reference, and many common problems are arranged in alphabetical order, and even deals with wild rabbits, a bit of history, and affects on behavior as separate chapters. In all, it is a handy book for rabbit lovers and owners to use in discovering more about these unique and lovable animals.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, Informative Book On Rabbit Behavior
I read this book straight through the day I bought it, and it was a fascinating book on rabbit behavior. It was a good book to read through, and it provided a whole lot of information about rabbit behavior. I'm going to have to read it multiple times to glean all of the information it presented.

There were some things that bothered me though. Because the heart of the book, information dealing with specific rabbit behaviors and how best to deal with them, was based on letters from specific people with specific rabbits a lot of the information was too specific, and as such many, many behaviors were missing, although I suppose it would be impossible to cover all of them.

Another thing that I found difficult was that it was written from a very Brittish perspective, so some of the terms and information were at best unrelatable and at worse contridictary to the way things are in America. I suppose this is something that is rather hard to avoid considering she is in England and all the experience and research as the base of this book is from there.

All in all, this was a very good book, but for me the omissions and cultural differences lowered the book's overall appeal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Now I know why my rabbit...
Before you buy one, read up!Before you give up on a bunny, read this book! Before you know it, your bunny with be your buddy, too!My bunny and I bonded immediately but he wasn't always mindful of my rules... now I know why he needs to dig and chew and I provide alternatives for him.He has his own bedroom that has been completely bunny-proofed and is allowed in the half of the house that has no carpet. Cords are covered in cloth and he seems to leave them alone now. He is the best pet I have ever had and is as affectionate as a dog and as playful as a cat. He is litter trained, and I feed him only vegies and hay. This book helped me understand his fear of being in the open yard with me, and to expect him to chew and dig because he is a rabbit.

3-0 out of 5 stars Didn't help me...
I got this book from the library, after my shipment was canceled by the sender.I am happy I didn't pay for it, as it did not help me at all.I wanted to know why my rabbit did normal things, like running around our legs, pooing around his litterbox, ect. This book only covered major problems that people might have with a rabbit, like aggressivness, stealing food or clothes, and fear.If your bunny is fine, get it from the library. If your bunny has some issues, get it from the libary, and read how to stop it.If your bunny needs a lot of help with many issues, then I think the book would be helpful. ...
