5-0 out of 5 stars All you need to know
I am a University student studying in zoology.
Before buying my own chinchillas I went through many books, but this one in particular was the most complete.
It gave me all the basic needs in owning a chinchilla with the little extras.
It is simple and the information just sticks to you with the many images illustrated inside this book.
It encourages you to care for your chinchilla and makes you feel confident in going forward to purchase one of your own.
I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised
After this publication hit shelves, it was brought to my attention that one of my sites, The CHINformation Organization Forum (http://www.chinformation.org/forum), had been listed as a web resource. I was honored, but a bit apprehensive, knowing that most books contain incorrect and even dangerous information regarding chinchillas. Promotions of the site are great, but I did not want to be associated with a publication that had the potential of doing more harm than good.I purchased the book and read it cover to cover and was very pleasantly surprised! It could stand to have better pictures of chinchillas, since most of the chins pictured are less than ideal, and it states that introducing adult females is easier than introducing adult males, which I tend to disagree with, but it's over-all pretty well written.I would recommend this book in addition to lots and lots of online research to prospective chinchilla owners. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If you are considering acquiring a pet rabbit, this is an excellent resource for the novice rabbit owner!
There are many different kinds of rabbits to choose from if you want one as a pet.One of the main considerations is that you select one that looks "healthy and lively."Baby rabbits, or kits, are old enough to leave the nest at around five weeks of age.You can have a single rabbit, but they do become lonesome. The recommendation is to select two "neutered female rabbits."Of course keeping a rabbit is a major responsibility because they can live for a decade or more. After choosing your pet or pets, selecting a proper cage comes next. There are certain dos and don'ts you need to think about to create a happy habitat for them.

It may take a bit of time for a rabbit to become used to you and your home. When the rabbit does become accustomed to its new surroundings, there are certain suggestions that might help you.For example when you go to pick up your rabbit you should "Put one hand under the rabbit's body, under its shoulders.Put your other hand under its bottom. Then lift it up close to you."Other things like keeping it away from cords is a must because they love to chew.In this book you will learn about their physical makeup, their exercise needs, how to set up and maintain a cage, their need for play, how to feed them, how they "talk," medical care, what to do when you go on vacation and more!

If you are considering acquiring a pet rabbit, this is an excellent resource for the novice rabbit owner. When I first started reading the book I was expecting an "easy reader" of rabbit facts, but was pleasantly surprised that it was very thorough and went into a lot of detail about owning one.All the material speaks directly to children and discusses not only facts, but also their responsibilities toward the animal. For example, when choosing a rabbit, the first sentence states "Animal shelters are often looking for good homes for rabbits."The numerous photographs are very informative and make it perfectly clear that the responsibility for care rests with the child, not the parent. In the back of the bok are useful tips, a fact file, a glossary, an index, and additional recommended book resources. If you are looking for a rabbit primer, I think you'd find this one will meet your expectations! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Basic Book - But Stick With Donna Anastasi
First off, I've read MANY of Sue Fox's books, and I find absolutely no fault with her research or presentation. As a small animal vet, I give her opinions great weight. That being said, my issue is with TFH and other "pet care" books affiliated with the pet food and product industry... specifically, the placement of easily identified products in photographs, even if those products are not the best items for the featured pet.

In two of the Animal Planet pet guides, for example, there are written sidebars or paragraphs "debunking" the issue of pine and cedar bedding.Fueled by the wood producers, these try to convince first time owners that there is no hard science proving that phenols from softwood shavings cause lung damage in small pets. This is patently false - see a paper written by a doctoral student here:

http://www.ratfanclub.org/pine&cdr.html

No legitimate breeder or rescue will recommend softwood bedding - not only for the risk of lung damage to the small pet, but because it can also carry in parasites such as mites much more readily than paper bedding (though this is largely the case when the producer is not one of the "big name" bedding producers).

When an author's work is edited or revised to align with pet industry interests, it is an insult to the author - again, Sue Fox is a wonderful writer and her work is largely VERY good advice. Also, due to the fact that she is a veterinarian and writes about a large variety of species, she is not able to specialize in any one - whereas Donna Anastasi, author of GERBILS, is president of the American Gerbil Society.I'd suggest reading both books together, and pulling the best information from that cumulative effort. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars "OK" book
This is the first book I purchased after getting my new Guinea Pig. It is very informative on how to take good care of your pet. I still am though, going to check out other Guinea Pig books as well to see how they compare. One thing about this book is that it talks about the "show" Guinea Pigs. Meaning how to take care of your pet when you want to enter it in a show. I just want the "pet" side of it. I dont plan to enter my pet guinea pig in a show any time soon. I actually never knew they even have Guinea Pig shows!Bottom line, good book overall, just some sections you would skip and get to the pet side of things.

4-0 out of 5 stars new piggy owner
i liked the fact that the only thing cheap at Petco was this book :) being a new guinea pig owner i wanted to learn all i could to keep a happy, healthy pair of piggys. it had in depth information about just about everything i could think of. the C&C cage idea was in there as well, me and a friend are going to attempt it :) i would recommend this book to anyone starting out with piggys :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Guinea Pigs (APL Pet Care Library)
I borrowed this book from the library after adopting a Cavy (Guinea Pig.) I liked it so much, I decided to buy one. It is very informative and detailed. For instance; Guinea Pigs are not Pigs, nor are they of the Swine Family. They are Cavies. (Cave - ees.) This book only rated four stars because it lacked One item I considered Vital Info.: How to identify the Gender of your Cavy. All books I read on Cavies recommend keeping @ least TWO Cavies, as they are social animals. But you don't want to keep a male & a female together, unless you wanta "gazillion" babies. (Yes, Cavies are of the same Family as Rabbits.) Other than this oversight, this is an excellent book, filled with color pics, and vital info. Highly Recommended. ... Read more

A new twist on the old pet care books! These delightful books will help beginning readers reach informed decisions as to whether an animal would make an acceptable pet. Not all the animals covered in the series are suitable for every family. Each title provides simplified technical info about the species, including how the animal lives in the wild, how big it will get, and how long it lives. It also provides details on care of the pet, such as space requirements, how and what to feed it, health care, and handling. Once readers understand whether the animal would make a good pet, they are prepared to try to convince their parents they can . . . care for the pet. Ferrets are fun, friendly family pets but they take a lot of work. They love to play, and they want to spend every waking moment of their days playing with you. They steal things when you re not looking and dig into whatever they can. They also jump, twist, and even dance. With this book, you can learn all about the special needs of these long and lanky pets and find out if they are the best pet for you and if you are the best owner for them. Arm yourself with the facts, and then you can show your parents just how prepared you are! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ferrets ( Animal Planet Pet Care Library )
This book is a must read for anyone who is considering acquiring a ferret, or who has recently acquired a ferret and has questions about how to care for, feed, and keep their ferret safe. There is a lot of information crammed in this small book.My family was new to Ferrets when we purchased this book and it has really helped us become comfortable with our new ferret and how to keep him happy and healthy.

Great product! I recieved it quickly! It has everything you need to know about ferrets.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the better "small" ferret books.
Ferrets are my kind of people. This is my kind of ferret book. It puts lots of good information for the new and experienced ferret owner. It is well organized and presents the information in an entertaining manner. Just a plain good read for a ferret lover and especially good for the person considering sharing their life with a ferret friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST PET OWNER'S BOOKS AVAILABLE ON FERRETS
Having been involved with keeping ferrets as pets, raising ferrets, watching ferrets, giving ferret advice and simply admiring ferrets for more years than I care to mention, I can truthfully say that this is one of the best overall, generally useful and most informative book for ferret owners that I have read.It is geared to the individual who has one or more ferrets for pets.

The Animal Planet Pet Care Library is a good, all around series and this little book is no exception. It covers, in some detail, the care, feeding, handling, socialization, housing, medical care and maintenance of these wonderful little animals.

The author does go into a nicely done natural history of ferrets and gives us a wonderful section of description including color variations, verbal communication and body language (very important if you want the most enjoyment out of your pet).I particularly liked the section of ferret physiology and the section giving advice on picking and choosing a veterinarian for your animal. The book is filled with wonderful photographs which are a delight within themselves. The text is concise, not too technical, and completely readable.

For the pet owner, I cannot think of a better book on the subject. There are many, many books on the subject of ferrets out there (goodness knows I have most of them), but this one is certainly at the top of the heap as far as usability goes and certainly in that position for the pet owner.
