5-0 out of 5 stars Traditions Begin Here
This is a wonderful little cookbook of Christmas recipes from many ethnic groups. Each recipe comes with a little history and background info. The photos almost make you want to eat the page. I haven't tried all the recipes, but the ones I have turned out well. If you want to make some new culinary traditions for Christmas, this is a good place to start.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good cookbook
Christmas is such a special time of the year. It's a celebration of Christ's birth, a time to connect with family and friends and of course, there's the yummy food.

Each recipe in The Family Christmas Cookbook is accompanied by a story or poem from Christmas: The Annual of Christmas Literature and Art that began in 1931 and was published for sixty-five years. The legacy begun those many years ago is continued in this global cookbook with recipes from around the world.

Smorekringle from Denmark brings memories of my Danish grandmother's kitchen at Christmas--the warmth, the fragrance of the food, the singing and storytelling. While making this delectable pastry with almond filling, read 'Blowing of the Yule.'

Coffee Braids are a sweetbread made with cardamom and originates from Finland. It's yummy and while devouring it, read the story Preparing for Christmas.

The Almond Torte is a meringue layer cake with chocolate frosting and almonds. It's mouth-watering good and originates in Serbia. The Serbian Blessing is beautiful.

And the Danish Ris Almande (sweet rice and almond pudding) gives me a rush of nostalgia for Christmases past. I want to return to my childhood and A Danish Christmas Eve Dinner. Perhaps this is a part of my heritage I can share with my grandchildren.

Oh, then there is Hogmanay Shortbread from Scotland, Sandbakkels from Scandinavia, Kourabiethes from Greece, Krumkake from Sweden & Scandinavia (one of my childhood favorites), Noche from Italy, Kanya (West Africa) and so much more. While you enjoy these scrumptious dishes, enjoy reading about the traditions and rituals of the countries where the recipes originate.

A delightful cookbook that will smack you in the face with your past--and you'll love every minute of it. Oh, and then there is the food. It's a good thing.

Armchair Interviews says: Another yummy addition to your cookbook collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yummy Yumm Yummy for the Tummy Tumm Tummy!
Oh we've been using these recipies for years now!The Elves can't get enough of them. And Santa, well, I think you know how HE feels about cookies! Why not bake some of the special treats in this book with your little ones, and leave a warm plate out for Santa Claus - with a cold glass of milk - on Christmas Eve! I happen to know for a fact he loves every cookie in this whole entire book! Who knows, maybe he'll leave you a little something extra if you make the ones with the vanilla frosting and sprinkles he likes so much!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book with Cookie Recipes and Great Ideas for Kids!!!
I bought this book November 1998 when my youngest daughter at the time was in the 4th grade and had a school project to do. So I took her to the book store looking through children's books for ideas and a project she could do. With all the books of ideas we found this is the book we chose and it caught my eye because it was up front of the store with all the Christmas displays and because the book had the words "Family & Kids" on it.As soon as we saw the "Holiday Garland" on page 22, that was what she wanted to do.

I bought the book, we made the "Best-ever Sugar Cookies on page 7 (which was very easy) to make the "Holiday Garland". We made the words "Noel", "Merry Christmas" and "Feliz Navidad" by following the directions and used their suggested ideas. My daughter presented her project to the class, she received a good grade on it and the children enjoyed eating the cookies.

In the past we also did the "Tasty Gift Ideas" on page 50, which everyone thought was cute and made the "Peanut Butter Sealed with a Kiss" cookies, which was good and fun to do. Just recently my niece borrowed my book for her christmas cookies that she's been making for years every Christmas. I would recommend this book to anyone, especially with kids, the cookie recipes are good, the creative gift giving ideas are good, along with the creative ideas to entertain kids with cookies are fun and not only Christmas.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not too impressed
I found that the cookies in this book that are actually fun and creative, are by far outnumbered by the usual, standard recipes that can be found in any cookie book.
I expected more inspiration from this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A good cookie book
I've made several of the cookies in this book for Christmas gifts in the last two years and I've had wonderful comments on the cookies.Good ideas for gifts, etc.

4-0 out of 5 stars great chocolate cookies

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book of Decadent Christmas Recipes
This is a really great book of recipes, many of which are so extravagant that you could only get away with making them at Christmastime. (But isn't extravagance what Christmas is all about?) Many other reviewers have complained about the complexity of the recipes or the fact that the recipes did not turn out well. It is important to realize that this is a somewhat advanced cookbook which assumes a certain level of knowledge about cooking. It does not spell out every single step. (One review mentioned that Emeril neglected to explain how to extract vanilla paste from a vanilla bean or temper egg when you add it to a hot mixture). Details such as these, which may seem to be second nature to the experienced cook, are left out of Emeril's explanations, so make sure you feel relatively confident in your cooking technique before embarking on some of the recipes.

I have made a number of recipes in this book, all of which have turned out marvelously. Some of the recipes are so delicious (as well as visually appealing) it really is a pleasure to put them on the table for my family at holiday time. Another nice feature of this book is that it is divided into occasions and menus, so that when you are busy during the holidays you don't have to put too much thought into coming up with a menu of your own. Emeril even includes a shopping list of ingredients at the beginning of each section.

If you are looking for a classic, basic Christmas cookbook this is certainly not it. However, if you are a somewhat experienced cook with a desire to put something a bit unusual and decadent on your Christmas table this year, this book is the one for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it love it love it, Not for everyone.
I absolutly love to cook, have been to culinary school, also not afraid of new things. I have tried most of these recipies and many have become regulars. The smoked salmon terrine although is expensive we normally make on every holiday now. Sugarcane Baked Ham with Spiced Apples and Pears is super. Beef Tenderloin with Fresh Horseradish and Black Pepper Crust was suprizing ly good, I ont like horseradish at all, but it was paired so beautifully in this recipie it was sublime. Jiffy Pop Firecracker Shrimp we make everytime we have shrimp in the house. the Chocolate Chocolate Pudding Cake with Chocolate Ganache, Creole Christmas Trifle, Creole Christmas Fruitcake with Whiskey Sauce and the Banana Cream Pie with Caramel Drizzle and Chocolate Sauces is to die for, however this recipie is written with the assumption you have made custards b4 and know you need to temper it beford adding the hot milk mixture. I have not made the Lobster Cheesecake with Christmas Caviar Sauce but hope to soon. the big boy cookies and the spiced pecans...Ummm yummy, I am soo happy to have bought this book. If you are open to try new things, If you like to occasionally like to indulge and eat like something so decatend and pretend that it is a common thing, this book is definatly for you. Emmeril, you are my hero.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for the faint of heart--but worth it!
If you're only familiar with Emeril from his TV appearances, this book may surprise you. It lacks the flamboyance and loud flashiness, replacing them with a certain elegance and gourmet style. It includes a Christmas Eve dinner for ten, Emeril's Christmas Day brunch buffet, New Orleans New Year's Eve dinner, a New Year's Day supper family style, the Chef's holiday favorites, and Emeril's "stocking stuffers."

The book is filledwith gorgeous photographs of lavish decorations and settings. They artfully set the mood in this book--one of no expense spared in the interest of fabulous holiday memories. Each section of the book is done as a menu, so that you can make the menu whole or steal individual recipes. None of these menus are quick things, and this book isn't designed for the cook who doesn't like to spend more than a half-hour in the kitchen. Shopping lists are included, as well as wine pairings.

This is not the cookbook for someone on a budget: it calls for such expensive ingredients as caviar, truffles, and huge amounts of fresh raspberries, some of which can be tough to find depending on where you live. The book also assumes at least a little experience with basic cooking techniques--novices shouldn't be starting with a gourmet cookbook using expensive ingredients. Not all of the recipes cost so much, however, and they aren't all complicated; for example, the spiced pecans are extremely inexpensive and easy, and they're so good that we've made them more than 15 times at least (and we don't often repeat recipes). They're so good, in fact, that people request them specially when they come to visit at holidays.

So try the salad of new potatoes and roasted walnuts with warm bacon vinaigrette, or the truffle risotto with parmesan croutons. Make the andouille cheese bread or the white cheddar truffle eggs. Save this book for an occasion when you really want to pull out all the stops, whether it's Christmas or some other important time in your life. The photos alone will inspire you to do great things in the kitchen!

This lovely author is able to evoke the feelings that one longs to feel at Christmas. It's more than nostalgia. She draws the reader in with beautiful or whimsical poetry which, although old, is somehow not dated. We are treated to sweet photographs and prints chosen so well for the thoughts and feelings they stir in us.She opens up her home and those of her cherished relatives and friends, and gives the reader the experience of meeting and enjoying the quirks and wisdom of each of them. What a treasure to have stumbled upon! How many cookbooks are this rich?

5-0 out of 5 stars Reads like a cozy nook.
My mother gave me this book for Christmas 8 years ago. I literally haven't put it down since! It not only contains recipes that were (and still are) cherished from a generation who knew what life was really all about, but the incidental tidbits of how life was lived long ago is absolutely priceless in this age when things are so inside out and everyone is looking for security and peace. The poems that were dear to the hearts of the depression era pull at the heartstrings, and the wonderful, descriptive details of families and friends that seemed to gather for any reason place the reader in that special time. The recipes are delicious and made with the easy-make-do-with-what-you-have confidence that our grandmothers prided themselves on.From Aunt Mabel's Cranberry Bread to Uncle Bud's Vinegar Pie, they're all recipes that would be welcome on any of today's contemporary tables. Granted, many of us wouldn't dream of making pie crust with lard....but one wouldn't hurt! If anyone has already read The Pioneer Lady's Country Kitchen, than The Pioneer Lady's Country Christmas is a must have for those collecting unusual and homey cookbooks. So stoke up the woodstove, grab a cup of hot chocolate and a cat for your lap, and read this book. You'll be transported to a wonderful memory!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for the Holidays, Good for any other Time
Obviously this is a cookbook for the holiday season. That being said, leafing through it, I saw some things I wanted to try straightaway, like Toasted Coconut Thumbprint Cookies on page 38 and the Cranberry Chutney on page 56 and the Tangerine Curd on page 51. All these were gorgeous and divine.

But this book isn't only about dessert. The Roasted Shrimp with Black Pepper and Thyme on page 66 is sumptuously scrumptious and it goes well with the Sauteed Mushroom Salad on the opposite page. Turn the page and you get the Salt and Fennel Roasted Pork Loin and let me tell you, Hubby Dub love, love, loved it. I did, too. So don't be put off by the "Christmas" in the title, you can use this book all year round.

I found this cookbook a while back, while touristing off in beautiful Laguna Beach in sunny Southern California. I spotted a sign for an estate sale. Hubby Dub never likes to go to these, he hates garage sales too, likewise thrift stores, but I poked him in the arm, he made a U turn and I discovered a soul who really liked to cook, sadly she'd passed away before I got to meet her. She had dozens and dozens of cookbooks, many of which I already had, but I discovered some gems. I made a lot of meals from them and, as usual, I took notes, which usually consists of me writing in the margins by the the recipes. I love cooking. Hubby Dub loves eating, I do, too. I hope you do as well and I hope you enjoy my reviews here.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Pleasant... Some recipes not to my taste
Williams-Sonoma makes a quality cookbook, and this is no exception. Food is well photographed and recipes have colored pictures. The layout is nice, featuring sections for every sort of taste.

I am giving this book 4 instead of 5 stars, because the selection of recipes were at times a little "out there."Particularly "Great Lakes Christmas Breakfast" with whose highlights include: beet and apple salad, radish salad, Kugelhopf and Gravlax. Erk.

I admit I'd much rather see more mainstream recipes including turkey, stuffing, and different family-friendly desserts. There were a few...But nothing that was really a keeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kids in the Holiday Kitchen
I first saw this book at our local library and fell in love with its graphics and fun recipes to do with kids. The recipes are colorful and many would make great teacher gifts all year around. There are recipes for lunch, such as, tea cup soup and snowman sandwiches...dressed up tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches. Our family is having a reunion this weekend and the caramel corn with orange and chocolate should be a hit.And our 4-H group recently used the cookies in a jar recipe for a project learning day and the kids really enjoyed themselves as they scooped in the ingredients and made colorful tags. This book will get lots of use year around!

4-0 out of 5 stars Really nice book
I was really happy to find this book for my daughters this Christmas. It has a really nice selection of recipes and crafts. There are ideas for meals like Stuffed French Toast, Mac and Cheese, and our favorite Teacup Tomato Soup with Grilled Cheese Sandwiches (cut with cookie cutter). Although this isn't a vegetarian cookbook, only two of the recipes contain meat (most recipes contain dairy products however). The selection of sweets (admittedly our favorite chapter) included ice cream, cookies, candies, drinks, and more. We all found something we liked (for me it was the Chocolate Mint Brownies!) The book also containsa selection of craft projects to make for gifts--the layered cookie jar especially caught my eye. A lot of the crafts sounded pretty good but I wish each one had a picture because it's hard to figure out what they should look like, especially for kids. In fact, if there was a picture of each recipe and craft, this would have been a five star rating. Still a great book, small and manageable for kids with some nice ideas. ... Read more
