5-0 out of 5 stars Loved this book
I loved this book of course you have a master give you the initiations. The book has a lot of wonderfulexercises that are meditations.
The author tells of her journey and is faithful to the traditional Reiki telling both the old story of Dr Usui and some of the new story.
Keeping with tradition the symbols are not printed but there is ample explainations of the use and transference of the symbols.
This bookis worth having and I am glad that I bought it. It would be a good book to give to students when they receive the first degree. There is so much info for a small book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Teach Yourself Reiki
This is only the second book I've read about Reiki. The title of the book is very misleading. After I bought the book and read it, I found out, according to the author, one needs to be taught by a Reiki master. Therefore, you cannot teach yourself Reiki.Do not waste your money on this book if that is your intent. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars If I could have given zero stars I would have!
This book is horrible. The book itself is hard to read and it offers no visuals to see if you are doing the tricks correctly. It offers no advice on how to teach your dog if they don't follow the book's steps exactly. Many of the tricks in the book are taught with cruel methods. For one trick the author recommends that you fill a paper bag with rice and rattle it while pretending to hit the dog and shouting at him to get out of the room. Wow. Dog training is supposed to be fun for the dog and a bonding time between owner and dog. These methods will quickly destroy that bond while making your dog a nervous wreck. Another tip was to shut your dog's leash in the door while the dog is riding in the car. This is a great way to severely damage your dog's head and neck if you are in an accident or even if you stop too fast.It bothers me that this book is out there and people that read it may follow the damaging advice. Skip this book! Save your money and enroll in a local positive training methods class instead.

4-0 out of 5 stars Speak, Fido!
First, you should know that this book IS actually about teaching your dog to talk. Not in the foofy-bonding-spiritual way, but in the "this is how you encourage them to make this particular vowel sound" way. I was a little shocked -- but amused -- by this. I'm not really interested in teaching my dog to speak, but thankfully there are lot of other fun tricks in this book. I would recommend it to anyone that wants a decent (but sometimes rambling) read in addition to their list of tricks. I honestly like it much more than 101 Dog Tricks for the stories and humor.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for every dog owner
This covers not only the basics, but also more advanced training. It is a must have for every dog owner.Written in easy to understand form.

4-0 out of 5 stars How to Teach Your Dog to Talk...
I thought this was a useful tool in teaching my new puppy some very fun and impressive tricks. Although she is not actually speaking English, I believe the book has improved our communication, and I'm speaking better Dog.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly How to
This is the only book I've found that tells you step by step how to do the many tricks listed, but also how to use the steps to get your dog to perform anything you want.My dog rolled over after 5 minutes on his 2nd try.And his methods are not cruel, by "correction" he means saying the word "no" or tugging on the leash a bit.No where in there does he mention slapping or beating the dog.Very useful book ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best in Show for Head of the Class
This is a marvelous book for youth and adults alike. It is full of information and fun things to do with your dog as well as good training ideas.I would highly recommend it for experienced dog people as well as the new dog owner. We have used many of the ideas with our 4-H dog club and they have enjoyed reading it too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Head of the Class is Top of the Class!
This is a wonderful new book! It's organized in a fun and clever way that make it easy to follow and relate to one's own experience. It's chapter divisions are based on a person's school career:

Parenthood, Preschool and Kindergarten, Elementary School, Avoiding Detention, Health Class, Vet School (Health Problems), PhD in Obedience, Finding Your Roots (Dog Instincts), Extracurricular Activities (Sports and Cultural Experiences), Civics Class (Community Service and Good Neighbors), Field Trips (Traveling), and Fine Arts, Home Economics, and Shop Class (Crafts, Recipes, and Fun)

The writing is for older children, and I would recommend it for 12 years and up, although a high level fourth and fifth grader would be able to handle it just fine. And of course, it's very enjoyable reading for adults, as well!

One of the great things about Head of the Class is that it isn't just about teaching dogs the commands. As noted above, it covers all areas of dog ownership so that teenagers and adults alike will get all they need to raise their new pup in a positive and humane way. Jan Wall, author How to Love Your Dog

Product Description
Savvy, comprehensive, and authoritative, this book, written by a physician with more than thirty years' experience caring for elderly patients, assesses the current state and the future prospects of Medicare, perhaps the most influential health-insurance program of our time. Christine K. Cassel draws upon the latest developments in science and medicine in a sweeping analysis of Medicare's social, demographic, institutional, political, and policy contexts. Writing in accessible language, using case studies to illustrate how policies translate to everyday lives, and applying lessons from the practice of geriatric medicine, Cassel makes a powerful argument for reforming and modernizing Medicare. She offers a new vision of what healthy aging could be and delineates what is needed to realize this vision, including changes in the medical sector, in the policy arena, and in our cultural beliefs about aging.
Cassel sheds light on a wide range of issues pertaining to Medicare, including debates about coverage and the looming deficit in the Medicare trust fund. Perhaps the most controversial issue she addresses is the challenge of rationing some kinds of care. Anchoring her discussion of Medicare in the idea that care for the elderly represents a social contract between government and its citizens, Cassel describes both the principles and potential of a progressive approach to geriatric medicine. She further argues that with this approach, we can also address the chronic problems of our larger health-care system and provide all Americans, no matter what their age, with high-quality and affordable medical care.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ !!
A veteran frontline Geriatric physician ,Dr Christine Casell has given a clear incisive description of the role of geriatric medicine in managing Medicare patients and what it can teach the US health care system. She also shows how politics has complicated a non partisan issue such as Medicare compromising the care of millions of vulnerable elders.
She does compliment a few systems (most of them integrated )such as the VA, Mayo Clinic and Kaiser Permanente in the way they coordinate care for the frail elderly.
It is a must read for all those policy wonks and politicians in Washington as well as those who influence policyin the AMA,AARP and the AGS.
Even though the book was written in 2005 most of her recommendations have yet to be accepted by Medicare in 2010.
It is also a wake up call for all Geriatric Medicine fellowship directors to revamp the way fellows are taught
As a frontline geriatric physician running a geriatric interdisciplinary team myself for over 20 years the care this nation provides our vulnerable seniors is fragmented ,costly and fraught with significant quality issues.
The back cover has glowing tributes written by Drs Berwick(CMS) and Halvorson (Kaiser)
It has been 5 years since the book was written and I hope the present health care crisis creates an impetus for Medicare and other Health care Insurance companies to implement her well thought out recommendations sooner rather than later ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Bitterly Disappointing
I was bitterly disappointed with this book as I thought it would help my terrier learn to kill on command instead of controlling his number two's.The editor should have given this publication a clearer title to avoid confusion.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is the real deal!
I was a bit skeptical when I read the previous reviews for "Eliminate on Command." I wasn't sure if these folks were "for real" or just joking about the book. Before I could read the book the evening of the day I received it, my hubby grabbed it and read it through in one sitting. I thought, "Fine, I'll read it tomorrow." He immediately began the training process, which is used on the dog's everyday, normal walks, and my hubby explained to me what we must do with an agreed upon "command" or "trigger word" for our precious Yorky's elimination. I followed through with the same command. Since she already understood the word "potty," we selected "potty-go," which fit into the category of a two or three syllable command. "...[T]he entire training time needed to accomplish your goal is less than five minutes during the entire week," (p. 9).

After only four days (while I read the book!), Abigail obeyed my hubby's command by immediately squatting and doing her business! I was stunned at the rapidity of the learning process/conditioning. PPC ("Piddle and Poop on Command," or "Positive Potty Control"), works well for a dog of 6 weeks or above. However, there are a few things which must be remembered. The command and praise must be used while the dog is eliminating, and this should be done for about 7 days--the command or trigger word being used approximately 50 to 75 times. But after the dog obeys the trigger word, the command should be used a few times each week only. Dr. Smith emphasizes that one should not over-use the command once the dog is trained.

Dr. Marjorie Smith says that "...PPC alone cannot housebreak your puppy, but it can help you enormously in your house-breaking efforts and greatly speed the development of reliable housebreaking patterns" (p. 23). Her book includes delightful illustrations of dogs in different training positions, and the dedication with a beautiful illustration on page 12 in memory of her three dogs is very touching. This lady truly knows her business, and I'd love to learn more about other training needs from her vast experience with animal behavior.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beware of a potential downside
While it can be hugely convenient to put your dog's elimination on cue, beware of a potential down side. I trained my dog to do this, and now she thinks she has to wait for the command before she's allowed to go. She'll hold it to the point of exploding before she'll go without the command.

5-0 out of 5 stars Freud would be pleased
I got myself a 300-pound Great Dane and taught him to do this using Smith and Stibbard's method. It's great for getting rid of those unwanted peddlers and solicitors who come to your door these days selling everything from Avon cosmetics to the latest s_x gizmo. Well, actually, some of the s_x toys are pretty interesting, but since my pet gerbil got jealous I had to return them.

So far it's worked great except for the salesman who's suing me in small claims court for ruining his $100 Florsheims.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
Smith and Stybbard have written a gem in this book. It's certainly helped me to take control of my dog's idiosyncratic toilet habits. My pug Grendel now dances to my tune, be it on walks, in the garden or merely impressing friends and family. A word of caution - take care when choosing your "command words" and "smart phrases" to avoid words your dog is likely to hear on the television. It took 4 episodes of Ali McBeal before I realised that my "full evacuation" command was in the theme song. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Ian Dunbar Makes Training a Dog Easy & Fun....and it Works!
I bought this book on a recommendation from a friend and I'm glad I did. Prior to bringing my first Black Labrador puppy home I read the entire book in one sitting. Its an easy, informative, and enjoyable read. This book does a great job of explaining how all of the things you do to train your dog are interpreted from his or her perspective. This is really an important thing for a human being to understand because it will make the relationship between you, your family, your friends, and your dog countless hours of enjoyment. Once you understand what makes a dog tick there's no limit to the things you can do and you can do a lot of it without the aid of a book.

In the early going of raising your puppy you'll find yourself going back to this book often -- and the good news? It will work!

Be persistent. Be Positive. You'll have a great dog that you can be very proud of, and he'll be proud of his or herself, too!

2-0 out of 5 stars Content maybe OK, style not attractive
You have read the positive reviews by many others, and this led me to buy this book. Yes, the general ideas are plausible, although nowhere near revolutionary. Be prepared to find this book unattractive. Right in the beginning, Dunbar creates vicious scenarios (dogs are euthanized, are run over by cars, cause accidents), from which he extrapolates. Why not just stick with "this works, and that is how I do it"? I didn't find it very compelling. The layout is cramped, small, relatively unattractive.

The author may understand dogs, but I am really not sure whether he understands how to appeal to many average readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars "A Dog's a Dog"
How many times have I walked through the park to see a dog pushed in a baby carriage? Or a small breed carried in a "baby pack" type sling? Ian Dunbar's approach is training from the dog's perspective and this has worked for me. One of my favorite quotes is "A Dog's a Dog" which is so true. Dogs need to do dog things, not to be treated like human babies! My dogs were digging up our garden. At the advice in the book we created a "doggy sandbox" and the pups stay out of our garden. I highly recommend any of Dr. Dunbar's books!

1-0 out of 5 stars Dunbar's not-so-positive techniques
I was very interested in Ian Dunbar's "positive reinforcement techniques" as an alternative to more confrontational methods. I was very shocked to find out that he recommends booby-traps for effective punishent of dogs on page 72 on his book. He suggests creating a trap that drops twenty pebble-filled beer cans on your dog after the dog triggers it by taking a bacon-fat soaked bait e.g. from the trash can.

Dunbar finds this kind of "effective punishment" very clever because it doesn't affect the dog-human relationship. I find suggestions like this completely inhumane. Traps like that will scare a dog out of his mind and you risk coming home to a traumatized and maybe even injured dog. Please do not fall for such outdated punishment-based training methods. The re-labeling of these methods as "reward-based" or "positive reinforcement" doesn't make them any less abusive.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great book if you have lots of idle friends
First let me say that this book and the more recent "Before and After Getting Your Puppy (Dunbar 2004) are virtually identical. There is a little additional material in the later volume, but in that book states that all important training MUST occur in the first 6 months of puppydom. One day later is too late. For those of us who aquired the dog when slightly past six months - well - let's just hope it's not true.

That said, I think most of the training techniques in Dunbar's books are reasonably effective - but he cops out on some very important behaviors. Many older puppies and dogs have greeting behaviors that include frantic jumping, pawing and scratching and even excited nipping. If an owner and his dog are ever going to have a social life (or a uneventful walk,) it is essential that these behaviors be corrected. These behaviors are particularily challenging because they are cccurring when a dog is in a high state of agitation and far less likely to attend to, or even hear, commands.

Dunbar's recommendation is to have a party (with at least twenty people) and have all those individuals repeatedly enter the house armed with treats. The dog is instructed in the proper behavior and rewarded when he/she complies.Treat and repeat until Rover gets the idea. Then have a party the following week to make sure it all stuck.Dunbar also wants you to have all these good natured dog lovers to walk around the block a number of times carrying treats so that Rover can "run into them" on his walk and be shown (again, and again, and again) how to behave. Now in theory, this is a great approach, but the truth is that most of us don't have twenty or more friends willing to spend a number of hours, two weeks in a row, assisting us in our dog training. As this is his only suggestion for correcting greeting behavior, it leaves the majority of us in the lurch with jumpy, hyperactive greeters who will no doubt drive away the friends we do have. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Spiritual Guide to the Process of Dying
Karen Jorgensen's insight and sensitivity will be a spiritual lantern to anyone seeking to cope with the process of dying from disease. Similar in some respects to Tuesdays with Morrie, Falling Practice is partly practical, but near poetic in form and deeply spiritual in content.
The phrase "Falling Practice" refers to two important ideas: First is Trusting: The game in which a person falls backward and learns to trust that another will catch him or her...and second, learning to adjust to each new loss of function as a person "falls" to ultimate rest. Karen tells the story of her last years after learning she had contracted ALS.She teaches us not to allow our lives to be defined by a disease, but rather to rise above it, to enjoy and appreciate the life and the world that we do have as fully as possible in the limited time given to each of us. Karen retells stories from her life about how she learned some of the life lessons she finally draws in the book. The stories give a warm and personal feel to "Falling Practice."
From a practical perspective the book discusses a number of the difficult decisions that need to be made along the way...the complicated emotional and practical considerations...she talks about how to use support groups to help deal with issues as they arise.
There are many artistic photos of Karen and her closest friends and family that aptly demonstrate her approach.
With a PH D in Elementary Education from U.C. Berkeley, Karen had written two other books which are aimed at helping elementary students to find and express a sense of self, of personal identity. In this last book she teaches us how to maintain that identity to our final time of rest. ...
