I got this book when my son was about 8 months old.He may not be typical, but by 9 months old he insisted on feeding himself rather than eat things offered on a spoon. The recipes in the 8-18 month chapter of thisbook are mostly soft, spoon-offered dishes which didn't get past his lipstoo often.

HOWEVER, the 18 month and beyond chapter is a real winner. Some of these dishes are so tasty I've served them to guests! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Healthy inspiration
This collaboration by food writer, Page, cardiovascular specialist, Schroeder, M.D., and dieticianDickson, is simple: keepsaturated fat to 25 grams per day and all fat to 75 or less.

The first half of the book describes the plan, and the reasoning behind it and offers quizzes and tables evaluating foods and lifestyle habits.

The system depends on what the authors call 'Fat Tracking,' becoming aware of fats and saturated fats in all the foods we eat. Numerous lists offer alternatives to high-fat foods (i.e., whole grain bread instead of croissant, Canadian bacon instead of regular, angelfood cake instead of donut. They explain the vital differences between oils and how to read labels in supermarkets, choose cuts of meat, and find high-fiber foods.

The second half consists of recipes from breakfast through dessert, with tips for preparation, variations and storage and nutrition information. Recipes include unusual dishes like Eggplant Caviar, Melon and Cucumber Soup, Corn and Polenta Souffle With Cilantro Cream; fat-reduced favorites like Lasagne, various pizzas, and Pork Roast With Prunes; and variations on traditional themes like Grilled Halibut with Tomato Salsa, London Broil Teriyaki, and Walnut Brownies, made with apple sauce and cocoa.

An excellent and informative program for good, healthy eating. ... Read more

Product Description

The first cookbook on this hot health topic

Trillions of bacteria naturally occur in the intestines, and most help protect the body from disease. These protective bacteria are called probiotics. Foods that nourish these "good" bacteria are called prebiotics.A number of factors can upset the balance between the levels of "good" and "bad" bacteria. There is evidence that consuming foods that are rich in "good" bacteria as well as foods that nourish these bacteria may help maintain a healthy balance of bacteria in the intestines and help improve health and fight certain diseases, like heart disease and cancer. This cookbook is organized by prebiotic and probiotic food recipes. Each of the 100 tasty recipes include instructions for properly cooking and storing food to preserve optimal levels of good bacteria.

2-0 out of 5 stars Better books on probiotics
I ordered this book because the author lives not too far away and if I liked what she had to say I'd make an appointment to see her. I never made the appointment.

I'd recommend Probiotics Revolution and Bacteria for Breakfast (which needs an index).

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice compendium of pre/probiotic recipes with good health info
This is a really nice book with many pictures and recipes. The recipes are easy and look delicious. There are early chapters with a lot of excellent info on the role of probiotics for health. It's really a lovely book that was put together to be easthetically pleasing as well as informationally useful. If you need probiotics in your diet, this is a good book to have. The recipes won't necessarily work miracles for your health by themselves but they will inform you on how to enhance your diet with foods that have pre/probiotic qualities. The only criticism I'd have of it would be that the recipes aren't as potent for probiotics as could be designed by let's say a real master, perhaps an experienced herbalist who cooks for healing. That would make it a much better book. So don't get your healing hopes up too high when you get this book. I have a book on chinese medicine that has a few recipes for healing in it that really work-- that's what I mean. Other than that, this is a fine book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
Probiotic and Prebiotic Recipes for Health is an excellent book to read if you are looking to improve your digestive system and health with practical tips, guidelines and recipes. They say your digestion is the engine that drives your bodies overall health, immune system, daily energy levels and protection against illness.Since I have food allergies and food intolerances, I found this book loaded with easy-to-read information that I am using to improve my own allergies. Now I'm not confused about all the differences and health benefits of yogurt, kefir, and the other varieties of fruits and vegetable for improving digestion. As a physical therapist, I will highly recommend this book to my patients who are suffering with digestive problems. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Cookbook
I am a veteran cook, but I only started using a crock pot a few years ago, and I wanted to find some good recipes.Although some of these recipes are not really that "light" in my opinion, the ones I tried were easy to adapt. And, I also added some seasonings to recipes that seemed a bit bland.I have lots of cookbooks, but this is my first one for the slow cooker.I would recommend it to others who are interested in this type of cooking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cookbook
This cookbook has so many interesting recipes. I can't wait to try them. I rarely purchase cookbooks, as most recipes I need are available online. However, this one needed to be in my kitchen!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
I have made several of the recipes in this book and they have all been great! I have to alter the recipes to some degree because we cannot have ANY salt in our food, nor can we have fat, but these recipes hold their flavor even without the salt. I'm glad I purchased this book!!

2-0 out of 5 stars didn't want
I was considering this book for my grown son and decided it was too much of add a can of such and such to meat and while he likes meat I think it is healthier to use fresh ingredients so I am going to look elsewhere. These recipes did look quick to prepare though

5-0 out of 5 stars Healthy recipes for everyone, including people with cancer
Make no mistake about it--this is a COOKBOOK, not a diet book. And none of the recipes are repeated from earlier books!

JoAnna Lund's recipe books are wonderful for eating healthy, whether your goal is losing weight, lowering cholesterol, or recovering from cancer or other medical conditions. All of her recipes can be enjoyed by all members of the family, not just the person recovering from cancer. (For the previous reviewer to say that cancer patients don't need recipes that serve 4-6 people is ridiculous and even offensive! Cancer patients are family members, and JoAnna's easy, tasty recipes make it possible for all members of the family to eat together. They're even easy enough for most teenagers to make if Mom or Dad aren't feeling well one evening.)

I own most of JoAnna's cookbooks and have used them primarily to lose weight and get healthy. The front section of all of her books contains information to be used if weight loss is your goal, or ignored if you're simply looking for healthy, easy, dishes to tempt a recovering patient back to the table. Each recipe also contains diabetic exchanges for anyone who needs that information. (If you're not diabetic, you just ignore it.)

The heart of this book is the FOOD--please don't lose sight of that. Yes, the introduction is from a top cancer educator and provides some valuable insights if you're coping with that disease. But the recipes are for EVERYONE, and they're delicious.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disservice to cancer patients
Tis book is merely a repackaging of the authors previous books and is adisservice to cancer patients. It is designed for losing weight, not acommon problem among cancer patients. The introduction blithely states thatthe cancer patient may want to substitute high calorie items for the lowcalorie ones used. The recipes are for four to six servings, somethingcancer patients do not need. It is "recommended" to freeze theremaining servings for future use. However, at that rate the freezer willbe filled within a few days with leftovers.

More importantly, thereappears to be little to no basis for the recipes chosen. There is nothingin the introduction or the recipes explaining why these recipes would begood for cancer patients. Nor do I see they particularly would be. Therecipes appear to have no particular basis for helping either patientsundergoing cancer treatment, trying to recover from cancer, or trying toprevent cancer.

I would recommend avoiding this book. If you want a goodbook on this subject, go to a true cancer recovery book, written by anexpert and with full explanations of why things will or will not help you,Daniel Nixon's "The Cancer Recovery Eating Plan: The Right Foods toHelp Fuel Your Recovery."

5-0 out of 5 stars Another homerun from the Lady from Iowa
I have been a subscriber to JoAnna Lunds newsletter every since it began publishing.I have all of her books, but this one strikes a chord close to my heart. As a volunteer with Hospice I know up front how importantnutrition is with people undergoing treatment of any kind for cancer.JoAnna takes that into consideration and makes everyday "comfortfood" have the most nutrition possible while not breaking your bankaccount.I have used this cookbook as a helper of sorts to families whoare caregivers so they can sit down together as a family and eat the samedishes the patient does.If you only buy one of JoAnna's cookbooks (whocan stop at one? They are all great!) please buy this one, everyone in theworld today seems to have someone they love or that they work with or aneighbor or someone they go to church with that has had cancer in theirfamily or just want to take better care to better of theirselves, this isthe book for that. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Duplicate of the Goddess Diet
I ordered this and the Goddess Diet and they are essentially, the same book. The chapters are rearranged but it is the same "summarized" information in each book. Reviews tout Dr. Gillespie as having the ability to diseminate medical informaion in easy to understand terms. If you want the Cliff Notes of Low GI eating, then this is the book for you. Save your money and buy the Glycemic Revolution. This is the diet she espouses but she gives you minimal information-certainly not enough to follow a low GI plan successfully.

1-0 out of 5 stars Way too technical!!
I have a degree in scince and my head was spinningn trying to read this book!! I was confused by what I could or could not eat.

The only helpful information I received was that every woman goes thru this and with the right diet and exercise you can change it.
But I will not find the right diet or exercise with this book!

I do recommend " fit after 40" by prevention. It gives a simple overview as to why your body is changing and has photos of different exercises along with a diet program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Women are not little men - what a concept!
Gillespie's book is very refreshing in her no-angst acceptance of the fact that women's bodies are just not the same as men's; she points out clearly that most dietetic and medical research (including the infamous FDA food pyramid) were based on the requirements of young men. Much of the information in her book is available from other sources, but she has put it all together very clearly. I particularly liked Gillespie's emphasis throughout on the individuality and personal responsibility of each woman's choices and decisions, and found her presentation of the hot-button estrogen supplementation therapy very even-handed. I was amazed, given the terror linkage of estrogen supplementation and breast cancer, to find that the risk of dying from breast cancer, even when using very low dosages of straight estrogen is only 3.3%, and the risk of dying of heart disease, when not using estrogen, is 22% (p113). Another example of her even-handed approach is her appraisal of the pros and cons of eating soy foods, and her warning that women with hypothyroid (me, again) should use caution and restraint with soy. I also liked the simple, easy to digest and remember, of the diet recommendations (p54). As I do not eat fish or seafood, am hypoglycaemic, and gluten-sensitive, lack the digestive enzymes required to digest pulses, and loathe coconut in any form, I tend to toss books with comprehensive diet plans. I'm sufficiently intelligent and committed to keep tabs on what I eat and appreciate the flexibility of Gillespie's commonsense advice not to drive oneself crazy trying to balance every single meal perfectly. [...]I use the tools available on the free website Spark People dot com. I edited the basic recommendations in my nutritional profile, and add the foods I eat on a daily basis to that day's record. With increasing awareness, over time my intake oscillates around the 40/25/35, and it's becoming hardwired. I've lost 10lb. There's a huge amount of information available on the glycaemic index, and Gillespie gives a quick-and-dirty list of what to avoid, apart from the obvious "white stuff" - refined starches and sugars (p46). I also like her discussion of the exercise options.

One advantage of estrogen supplementation that Gillespie does not mention, surprisingly, is reduction of migraine headaches. Mine, which started in early childhood, had become chronic, as in 23+ days of pain out of every 30. I had to quit work and spent 6 months working through a Chronic Pain Clinic, taking large doses of powerful medications, Botox shots, emergency shots, learning and practicing biofeedback, and so on. I was told there was nothing left for me except surgery to sever my cranial nerves, and that is not infallible. After careful discussion of the risks of estrogen supplementation with my OB-GYN, who was clear that small doses posed a minute risk of cancer, while my risk of stroke during a headache was rising with each attack, I made the decision to go with it, and take 0.5mg Estradiol daily. I've gone to 7-9 days of pain per month, at an intensity of 5-8 out of 10, instead of 9-10. The hot flashes and night sweats, which were severely debilitating (my husband thought I was wetting the bed!), are now no more than a minor inconvenience. I went back in school, work part-time, go to Curves, and have a life.

To sum up, Gillespie makes it very easy to head for lifetime health; waist size under 30", BMI under 25, body fat under 25%. The last one's a bummer, but I'm working on it! The minimeals approach is well proven, and Gillespie's formula for calculating the number required (p135) is easy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth reading

2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book

Product Description

Get pregnant--naturally!

The Fertility Diet reveals startling new research from the landmark Nurses' Health Study, which shows that the food you eat can boost your fertility. The book prescribes ten simple changes in diet and activity that can increase your chances of getting pregnant. These changes include:

  • Cutting back on red meat and trans fats
  • Getting protein and iron from veggies and nuts
  • Choosing whole-fat milk and even ice cream
  • Drinking coffee, tea, and alcohol in moderation
  • Losing weight (if needed) and exercising

The Nurses' Health Study exhaustively examined the effects of diet and other lifestyle changes on fertility among nearly 20,000 female nurses. Two of the study's lead researchers translate its groundbreaking findings into changes you can put into practice today, setting the stage for a healthy pregnancy and forming the foundation for an eating strategy that will serve you well for the rest of your life. The Fertility Diet also offers a week's worth of meal plans and delicious recipes that will make following the guildelines easy and tasty. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars it works.
This book taught me that, contrary to what many of us have been led to believe, fats are not evil. We women of fertile years NEED fat. Not too much, of course, but having enough is essential to ensure our bodies are working properly. My husband and I had been trying, unsuccessfully, to get pregnant for quite some time. I considered myself a healthy eater who led a healthy lifestyle. I had been a follower of a "clean" diet (See Tosca Reno's Eat-Clean Diet books--great for staying trim, and I still recommend them to people to teach them to avoid processed foods), and I exercised regularly, being a personal trainer as well. Reading this book opened my eyes to the need to incorporate more fats into my diet in order to boost my fertility. I ate ice cream, I drank milk that wasn't skim, and I followed other aspects of this "fertility diet" in the hopes I would prove the doctors (including the fertility specialists) wrong, that we COULD and WOULD get pregnant on our own.

I was almost at my wit's end. Since I had begun tweaking my diet as the book suggested, my period had returned so I thought I was having cycles again. However, the "experts" still said pregnancy was nearly impossible since there was such a ridiculously slim chance I could be ovulating. The last statistic I was given was that I had a slim 4-5% chance of getting pregnant without an egg donor only if I was on hormone replacement therapy, but zero chance without. Meanwhile, I skipped yet another cycle. I thought it simply meant they were right, that I was going through menopause at the age of 28. This time, however, I was pregnant! I had been on the fertility diet for about 2 months, and now, almost a year later, I have a very healthy, beautiful, 4-month old baby girl. Not only that, but my cycles have been fairly regular since having her. Before pregnancy, I could expect to get maybe 4 or 5 periods a year. I have high hopes that not only has this book helped us have a child when we thought the only way for us to be parents was through adoption or an egg donor, but that we can get pregnant again when the time is right.

Let me add that I had never begun taking fertility drugs of any sort. Each doctor I saw just ran tests and then sent me to yet another specialist. The last doctor who handed me the last statistic was only looking at test results from two and a half months prior to me seeing him and was waiting to run his own tests. He was so sure of his diagnosis of premature ovarian failure that he failed to run a pregnancy test to rule out that possibility! Had he run another test to check my hormone levels, I wonder what he would have found (other than the pregnancy).

If you are trying unsuccessfully to get pregnant, you MUST read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful information for women trying to get pregnant
This book was an easy read and provided important nutrition and lifestyle information for women trying to become pregnant. The information seemed well-proven and effective. 3-0 out of 5 stars Wasn't what I expected.
I have Jane A. Plant's copy of "Your Life in Your Hands" and was expecting this book to be vegan, but it's got recipes with meat in it. Just wanted to post this FYI for anyone else out there that may have been like me. I much prefer "Your Life In Your Hands." This books is nothing but a cook book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book I can't LIVE without!
It is 3 years since I bought this book,in April 2005, soon after being diagnosed with the most serious staging of prostate cancer. I had only just celebrated my 54th birthday and here was I being told that the prognosis was very, very bleak. I then bought and read Jane Plant's own inspiring story of her fight against breast cancer in her book "Your life In Your Hands", and I became convinced of the wisdom of her words and her successful strategy in the battle against such devastating illness. The first step in my fightback was to completely change my diet, and to do this I needed a guide to help me through the planning of all my daily meals. Never having been on any type of diet before, I was at a loss as to where to start, what to buy, what to avoid, and how to prepare and to cook the foods I would now need. This simple, well written book was my guiding light, my very own cookery 'bible. To this day it sits proudly on my kitchen shelf, now very well thumbed through and extrememly well worn.I could never have managed to stay on the path to recovery without it.And a recovery it has indeed been. Only last week, on 15th May 2008, my oncologist gave me my latest blood test results and told me how amazed and delighted he was that I had come through all the hormone treatment and radiotherapy so exceptionally well, and that after having stopped all medication 6 months ahead of schedule, my results were startling.I have a normal PSA level and my testosterone is equivalent to that of a healthy, younger man.I cannot praise this book highly enough, and I have waited three years to write this review, now being totally sure that buying it was one of the best decisions of my life.Thank you Prof Jane Plant. It worked for you, and you were magnanimous enough to write these books and to spread this message of hope to other cancer sufferers....and I am sure that there must be many others now in the world who are feeling as I do today....so very glad to be alive!

4-0 out of 5 stars poison conspiracy
Discovering the basic information in Wigmore's could easily prompt one to feel there is a poison conspiracy within the health system, at least in the U.S. We constantly hear about new "life saving vaccines" for everything from measles to the swine flu, from cancer to aids and yet it's never made clear that these "medical wonders" actually do NOTHINGto their targeted ailments. Their ONLY purpose is to "prompt" our bodies to protect us from them. In other words for our bodies to naturally provide a defense or cure for the disease or ailment. Wigmore accurately points out that this natural ability to maintain good health is something we have within our bodies, evolved over millions of years of surviving in the midst of all the maladies our world has produced. Why are we suffering from the myriad of health challenges we suddenly find in our world? We have to look no further than what we are putting in our mouths. While what we are doing to our planet in terms of pollution etc. has an effect on our health she accurately points out that it is our cooked, over processed food that is turning off our natural healing power. This of course produces enormous profit for our "for profit" health system. While I do not subscribe to a conspiracy I think Wigmore gives us the essence of what we need for optimum health. It's enzymes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not thrilled with th is book
I really am not too thrilled with this book it is almost impossible to to follow.I have been on health diet, not for weight loss, and this is the strictest so far.
I suffer from hyperthyroidism and I am a raw foodist which helps my condition.
The items on this diet are not the norm.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ann Wigmore is a great voice for raw diet and especially wheatgrass in healing
I had the great delight of meeting Ann Wigmore at her Boston-based health center. What a fantastic, energetic, bright, and happy person, and so moved to help others heal and live healthfully through green diet. This book very clearly presents her system of diet, the reasons for it, and how to intelligent both adapt to raw food & wheatgrass life.

Hippocrates was developed before the green smoothie revolution, wheatgrass is a root-element of this program, but the wisdom is obvious, the arguments clear, and the results unarguable. The remarkable healing that take place when on a wheatgrass-based diet speak for themselves.

This is a great program of health and healing. And Ann Wigmore certainly should be studied for those of us on the raw food path, she was a pioneer and an inspired educator.

Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ!
Once I read Ann Wigmore's book on Wheatgrass it really sparked an interest in live food and health. Ann Wigmore is a true pioneer and has left such a gift to all of us if only we can open our mind to the concept of healthy nutrition. I wish her teachings were in every school and more people would gain the wisdom this wonderful woman made her life's work. If you are suffering from illness this is a great option..change your diet! It makes so much sense and to see people eating crap and then wondering why they are sick is so frustrating when the answers are in books like Ann Wigmore's. I have seen people go into remission from cancer from adopting this lifestyle..I pray the live food evolution will sweep the continent and more people can live a truly healthy life..I cant say enough about the changes it has made in my own life and the lives of others! I would also recommend a dvd called "Ann Wigmore's Living Foods Lifestyle" filmed at the Natural Health Institute in Puerto Rico..it is a hands on guide that shows you how to make meals, how to sprout, compost..so much interesting info and interviews with live foodists..I thoroughly enjoyed it and it was so much better watching a dvd and seeing things first hand. It is available through www.annwigmore.org

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Satisfied!
I am very satisfied with using Amazon.com to order books. The service is fast and accurate.
The book What Do I Eat Now?is very informative. It is easy reading and a step by step guide to changing my eating habits to healthier ones.I would recommend this book to anyone who has just been diagnosed with diabetes. It really helps.

4-0 out of 5 stars What to eat when you have Diabetes
I purchased this for a friend who was newly diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes.I also purchased one for myself even though I have been dealing with this disease for over 20 years.

I found this book somewhat helpful, especially for the newly diagnosed patient. It lets you know you don't have to give up the foods you love, just eat them in moderation.

I would recommend this book, especially for the newly diagnosed patient.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing carb guidance and recipes
I may keep this book for the nutrition info on fats, alcohol and snacks. It is truly a beginner's
guide for someone with diabetes. With a family member recently diagnosed with diabetes who has built a little
library of diabetes guides-I find myself disappointed in this.I was hoping for great food ideas and recipes
to expand our choices-and for someone who limits carbs to 30-40 per meal this is not much help.A good
guide to healthy eating but not much help to someone preparing meals for a diabetic devoted to a truly low
carb intake.

5-0 out of 5 stars Newly Diagnosed Diabetic?
This book takes the fear out of the "now what can I eat" anxiety. It is very simple and straight foward reading.I highly reccommend this book for the person who has been newly diagnosed with diabetes...it has helped out my family.

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book!
This book is a great resource for anyone who faces the challenges of managing type 2 diabetes - the major one being what to eat! Not only does it help a person decide what and how much to eat, the book also provides tasty recipes (I loved the Cranberry Pear Salad recipe and the Bruschetta Baked Potatoes) and tips on how to eat out without losing ground. The authors give practical advice on how to accomplish lifestyle goals including nutrition and exercise (I personally find it very helpful to use a pedometer to measure steps). Also included is a wealth of information about how to manage diabetes and demystify the myths about "diets" and diabetes. I give this book a big thumbs up! ... Read more
