4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting info.
Typical of diet books with lots of info that you hurry through to get to the meat of it. Pun not intended. Well researched and good diet to follow to get started on the program.

2-0 out of 5 stars you can get better info for free on the net
this book confused me. why did it need to be so mathmatically challenging?i don't want formulas and percentages.....just tell me what to do and how to do it. this plan is a good one, and i found better, easier to follow info on the net for free. i'm using maybe 5 pages out of this entire book to supplement the info i found. find it on clearance or borrow someone's copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent change
I found the book very informative. The combination of nutrition, exercise and spirituality all tied together made you seem like there is a purpose for change.Making a few of the moderate changes in this book resulted in positive results.Much to my surprise I was actaully eating more but lost weight.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Life-Changing Book
This is a great book! The recipes are simply delicious--I never have been able to bake bread before and have it turn out, but the whole wheat recipe here comes out beautifully and it's delicious. Some of my favorite recipes are the banana barley loaf, the lentil loaf, the oat pancakes and topping (I used apples rather than pears for the topping), the corn bread, the lentil soup, the marina and pasta sauces, the Indian Subzi. There are too many to name them all!And too, I use the advice in this book to convert older favorite recipes with unhealthy ingredients to heart healthy yet delicious alternatives.I love the approach too, with a focus on not only nutrition and fitness but also emotional and spiritual health--I found that once I was used to not adding salt to food, and consistently followed the advice in the book, I no longer craved foods as I used to, achieved my target weight, and felt better than I ever had in my life. I have never had heart disease, diabetes, or high blood pressure, but all are very prevalent in my family. I wanted to do something to lose weight and to keep myself fit.I think the advice in this book is for everyone, those with heart disease and those who want to keep their hearts healthy.Heal Your Heart is an awesome book that can change your life. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars a big disappointment
I love peanut butter so thought this would be great.I sat down and went through the whole book the same day it arrived. Then I closed it, put it in the bookcase and it hasn't been opened since.

4-0 out of 5 stars Talking Peanut Alert
Dr. Peanut asked me to post this review. He has nothing against people eating peanuts, but he noticed that the book failed to mention the difference between the kinds of peanuts that people can eat (and should, as the doctor can explain) and the Talking Peanuts, which he hopes no one eats anymore."Please," he says, "think of the suffering!" Nutty to Meet You! Dr. Peanut Book #1

4-0 out of 5 stars Very tasty
The recipes are easy, quick, and the food is really tasty. And I'm actually losing weight.I've never eaten such healthy foods. My only complaint is that the book is cheaply made so it is difficult to keep it open to the correct page.

3-0 out of 5 stars not what I expected
This is ok, don't get me wrong but it isn't what I expected which is probably more my own fault than anyone else's.

1-0 out of 5 stars not written with care
This book must have been thrown together quickly:In the area that gives the menus, with page numbers for different recipes, the page numbers are often wrong:Peanut Butter Bagel is on page 203 (not 000), PB&J on Rye is on page 201, not 202.I feel ripped off.Elizabeth in McKeesport ... Read more

Product Description
Renowned cancer specialist Ronald Citron, M.D. uses his medicalknowledge, as well as his wife Kathye's expertise as a chef, in this anti-cancer, anti-heartdisease diet book.Amazon.com Review
"Cholesterol" is one of the most confusing words inthe health world. Most people assume that because excess cholesterolin your blood is a bad thing, cholesterol in your diet must bedangerous, too. But, as Ronald Citron points out, the two things areunrelated. Excess cholesterol in your bloodstream comes from too muchsaturated fat in your diet. Eating high-cholesterol food such asshellfish and game meats is extremely healthy; they're generally lowin fat and, more important, are extremely low in saturated fat. That'sthe "evolutionary" part of Citron's plan: if you eat the wayour hunter-gatherer Cro-Magnon ancestors ate, you'll avoid healthproblems because you'll be eating the foods our bodies evolved toconsume. More than half of the book consists of recipes and menu plansfor putting Citron's theories into practice. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Hunter Gathers Ate No Grains, Cro-Magnons not our ancestors
My review title tells it.You're a great cook, but next time, PLEASE do your homework before writing a book.Grains were not part of our diet until 10K years ago.The next person who writes something about how ourancestors ate whole grains for the 2.6 million period of human historyshould have their laptop taken away from them!Stick to cooking!

5-0 out of 5 stars A philosophy that makes sense.Great recipes.
This book makes sense. The premise is that our bodies evolved to eat food that could be hunted and gathered. That means fruit, vegetables, nuts, some whole grains, and some meat.(If we could catch it, we could eat it.)The no-nonsense message is that a diet that includes a range of whole foods (we didn't evolve to eat Cheetos and Whoppers!) can taste great and keep you healthy.

The recipes are really tasty. Some are exotic. Some take only ten minutes. There's enough variety, spice, and substance to keep me satisfied.

I read The Zone and realized that it was fundamentally a low-calorie diet -- of course you'll lose weight, but I can't believe it's healthy. If you really follow it you don't eat enough!I tried McDougall's plan and found his recipes bland and tired after a while.I liked Ornish's recipes but found myself craving tuna salad sandwiches and eating way too much dairy.Citron's book is balanced and less restrictive than Ornish or McDougall, and it makes complete sense from a scientific standpoint.Thumbs up!

1-0 out of 5 stars Same Old Stuff
The promise of the book is that it is a novel approace to diet based on the diet of our Cro-Magnon ancestors.Unfortunately, the author ignores much of the evidence from the paleontological record and picks and chooses whateversupports the standard low-fat noncense (the author is in a panic about saturated fats). While I will give him credit for incorporating wild game and other "flesh foods" into his program, he also includes foods that Cro-Magnonpeople rarely, if ever, consumed (such as dairy products and grains). He also includes sugar in many of his recipes. For a really compelling understanding of food as it relates to evolutionary theory, I suggest reading Peter D'Amamo's book "Eat Right For Your Type".Also, the Paleolithic Diet Page on the web has great articles and information. ... Product Description
Outrunning My Shadow: Surviving Open-Heart Surgery and Battling Obesity/The Decision to Change My Life by Keith Ahrens is a fascinating and highly informative memoir about the author?s confrontation with mortality and his determination to save his own life. In this self-help book, the author shares the experience of weighing more than 400 pounds, suffering lightheadedness, and finally seeing a physician. When this sedentary man learned that he had suffered a heart attack and that open-heart surgery was his only option for survival, his efforts toward his recovery became dramatically proactive. The spirit of this book is not a confrontation for readers who are overweight, but a supportive and encouraging reminder that everyone deserves to have a long and healthy life, and that paying attention to how we live; food, exercise, regular checkups; goes a long way toward good health. For anyone seeking the inspiration and encouragement to pursue longevity, this is the place to start. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Journey Towards Good Health and Fitness
The book is a must-read for anyone who is battling obesity and heart disease, or who has a family member or friend in the same situation.

Keith Ahrens was another victim of the fast food culture, over eatingon a diet of fast and convenient food that was high in saturated fat, sodium and refined carbohydrates, and containing minimal nutritional content. With an active career, and not making his health a priority, the overeating of unhealthy foods and the lack of consistent exercise made Ahrens into a morbidly obese man.Along with the obesity came the clogged arteries, the heart disease, and being told he was in need of an open-heart bypass surgery.

Ahrens' story is not only about the ordeal of the surgery and the subsequent recovery period, but it is a story about a man who made a choice to finally put himself equal with everything else that was important in his life, and so he made the decision to plant his feet firmly on the road to good health and fitness, a journey that he has committed to be on for the rest of his life.By sharing his story with the readers, Ahrens is inviting everyone to join him on his journey, to learn the basics of good nutrition, how to live a heart-healthy lifestyle, and how important it is to exercise the body. The reader learns how important it is to see the doctor, to understand how important it is to know the body's cholesterol levels, and to be aware of the symptoms of heart disease. If Ahrens can make the journey towards good health and fitness, so can the readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Biggest Winner - Keith Ahrens
Every January we're bombarded with weight loss commercials and advertisements to lose weight now with the help of "this 30-day meal plan" or "that shake"; "this piece of equipment", or "that exercise video". Keith's story came to us quietly in the local Las Vegas newspaper, humbly telling his story and mentioning his book. I was very intrigued at what Keith had accomplished, so I purchased this book and I'm very glad that I did. Keith went through a life-changing experience: open heart surgery and he survived. That he decided to share his story is a gift to us and that makes him the biggest winner in my book.Loving to eat food is not something you can just "give up."With physician's help and self-determination, one can "quit" smoking, for instance (hopefully), however we can agree that we simply can't "quit" eating. Keith, however, learned how to eat healthier, smaller portions and incorporate exercise into his life...the weight loss formula of success "eat less and move more." It's hard to lose weight.Keith lost a lot of weight. Plus he recovered from major surgery. Let this book be inspirational for you.Motivate yourself to accomplish your goals. Seize the day. Thanks, Keith, for the reminder!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outrunning My Shadow...A MUST Read!
Many of the facts in this book can be obtained from other books or your very own Doctor. What you will not find anywhere else is Keith's personal story.

Whether your struggle is your own or that of a friend or loved one. I recommend this book as a guide to helping yourself and those you love.

Keith's journey and his depiction of it is amazing and inspirational to say the least.Thank you for sharing your story!

5-0 out of 5 stars Change a Life Today
Very few people have the chance to make a difference in the lives of others, and even fewer have the courage to take advantage of such an opportunity. Keith has not only taken advantage of that opportunity but has excelled and accepted the challenge with passionate enthusiasm. His book, "Outrunning My Shadow", and his personal appearances reach an important audience and provide them with the basic knowledge and tools they need to live a more healthy, empowered, and enjoyable life. Simply put, this book will change people and save lives. It is because of Keith that millions of people will receive a second chance in life and use that second chance to achieve great things, both personally and professionally. Tell a friend today about Keith and his book "Outrunning My Shadow". Tell them to visit [...] and you, too, may very well give someone a second chance in life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
This book makes you want to be a better you.It is inspiring for anyone wanting to make a hard but positive change in their life. ... Read more
