Product Description
Why, after decades of research, analysis, and experimentation, is helicopter performance still where it is?

With this question, Dr. J. Gordon Leishman opens an invigoratingdiscussion of technical problems influencing the performance of thehelicopter, and provides a unique perspective into future challengesand new opportunities in realizing its full performance. The problemsof the helicopter are assessed in terms of the interdependentaeromechanical factors that affect and limit its flightcapabilities. While written primarily for researchers, engineers, managers, and policymakers in the rotorcraft field, the book assumesonly a basic background in helicopter engineering and avoids detailedmathematical development, making it suitable for all helicopterenthusiasts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must add to any library
This is a good book in learning about the many technical challenges that face the helicopter as an engineering system. A good amount of discussion shows the many tradeoffs and competing requirements which pose significant challenges in revolutionizing the helicopter. Attention is also given to our limited ability to understand the complex aperiodic nature of the flow, along with the complex interaction effects between the main rotor, tail rotor, and fuselage. Next, the book discusses flow control methods along with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) taking on a more active role in helicopter design and analysis. The book ends with the over-arching emphasis of setting realistic government goals that radically shifts the conventional way of thinking on how helicopters are made. If the helicopter is to have drastic performance changes, the government, academia, and industry have to team together for the benefit of all.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Helicopter: Thinking Forward - Looking Back
This book was a pleasure to read. It presents an overview of recent rotor aerodynamic, acoustic and aeromechanical research and development and its application to the design of the overall vehicle, in simple and graphic terms that can be readily comprehended by people with little detailed knowledge of the helicopter.

Accuracy has not suffered from the simplification process - the book's author, Prof Gordon Leishman, is one of the foremost researchers and experts in the rotorcraft field. He has used this expertise to explain the technology so that its logic is readily apparent. He also provides a very useful list of easily obtained references for deeper reading.

But the book is much more than a guide to the technicalities of rotorcraft engineering, since it places the engineering and research topics into the context of the overall aircraft design and deals with how they affect the fundamentals of the vehicle's performance. The book contains a considerable amount of overall generalised performance data that gets to the core of what the helicopter is and what it offers to its customers and perhaps more important, what limits its performance and how its capabilities can be transformed by application of advances in technology.

The book does not shirk from looking at the problem of how technology comes into being and is incorporated into the vehicle, either. The author reviews the success of recent trends in applying the technology to improving the vehicle and draws some uncomfortable conclusions. He then proposes strategies for improving results.

As an engineer familiar with the field, I found this book very enjoyable and read it in one session. I discovered a few aspects of the subject that were new to me, but most important to me were the thought provoking questions on the development of the vehicle and the industry that the book raised.

From the supplier: Helicopter technology is very different from general aircraft technology, and even experienced aviation attorneys can find helicopter cases challenging. These cases can be even more challenging for a jury, making the selection of expert witnesses who are good teachers and communicators of key importance. An expert can help investigate the accident, develop technical theories, qualify and retain other experts and coordinate the efforts of the expert team. Experts can also evaluate discovery for technical accuracy.

Product Description
The result of 15 years research, this book is the first comprehensive account of the development of auto-gyros and helicopters in Germany during the period 1930-1945. It sheds much light on an area of considerable aeronautical achievement, which has until now been unjustly neglected.

German progress in this field has been overshadowed by developments in other areas. Yet by the end of World War II, despite minimal funding, lukewarm official support and bitter inter-service rivalries, the Germans were, undoubtedly, technologically way ahead of their American counterparts in the development of rotating wing aircraft. This book, which will become the definitive work on the subject, is fully illustrated throughout with many photos which are believed to have been unpublished until now. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Outstanding
This is an outstandingly well researched book on the somewhat obscure but very important helicopter developments conducted in Germany prior to and during WW2. The author has painstakingly gathered and assembled information from various and sundry sources, including individuals involved in these developments, to present a thorough exposition of the world's first practical helicopters.

Fifty stars for this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A rewarding book
After I tried to study foundations of helicopter flight on my own with some other books I took to this one and got fascinated about helicopter theory.

The chapters are:
Introduction
Rotorcraft configuration
The rotor in hover
The rotor in axial flight - climb and decent
The rotor in forward flight
Dynamics of the rotor
Autorotative performance
Blade dynamics
Helicopter trim
Vibration and it's transmission
Tail rotors
Ground resonance
Rotor speed governing
Methods of calculating helicopter power, fuel consumption andmission performance
Epilogue - windmill

The book is a very rewarding pleasure to read!
The topics are motivating, text and derivations are clear and well balanced. You can study the book without ever getting stuck when you have a good background in aeronautical engineering.

I would wish the Author writes another book about helicopter flight dynamics and control as well.
