Product Description
This book is a comprehensive reference guide to herb and spice plants that are cultivated in Canada and the northern half of the United States for the purpose of flavouring foods. Culinary herbs are of professional interest to the farmer, economist, pharmaceutical industry, flavouring and perfume extract industry, dietician, and teacher. They also offer delightful aroma, taste, and appearance to the home gardener, cook, and indeed all consumers. Categories of information covered in considerable detail for 125 species are extensively illustrated, with over 400 drawings in the book. A colour map of North America is included that shows climatic zones where each of the species can be cultivated. The Book includes Bibliography and indexes to English, French, and scientific names. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Book extraordinary tribute to the love of herbs!
This book stands alone as the most thorough treatment of the subject Ihave ever come across since Mrs. M. Grieve's A Modern Herbal, firstpublished in 1931. This book achieves the near impossible: it is animpepeccable resource for both scientific researchers and the averagegardener.

Small's emphasis is on herb and spice plants grown in Canadaand the northern half of the U.S.A., and he includes such diverse subjectsas sugar maple and mint.

In the opening chapters, I particularly enjoyedthe one dealing with the historical importance of culinary herbs. Some ofit, but by no means all, I have read before, but Small brings it alltogether in a cohesive story that carries the reader from ancient times tothe present day.

I also like the chapter on chemistry and nutrition.Although the chemical analysis given for individual herbs is over my head, this introduction at least affords me a layman's understanding of a complexsubject.

Where most herb books gloss over the possible dangers of usingherbs with a casual warning of "not to over do it," Small meetsthe subject head-on. Under the heading "Herbs, medicine andsafety," he gives a well-balanced discussion of the good and the bad. Some of the information on natural plant toxins is a real eye opener. Thischapter should be required reading for anyone who dabbles in making theirown blends of herbal teas and such, especially if they are made up forsale.

The bulk of the book is given to covering 125 species inconsiderable detail. This information is given in categories, making iteasy to quickly extract whatever you happen to be looking for.

In a worksuch as this, one expects a wealth of botanical information, but for theaverage gardener, listing all recorded modern English and French commonnames was a master stroke. Knowing that the "mugweed" you aretalking about is my "sweet woodruff" can clear up muchconfusion.

Taxonomy, history, recipe sources (I love this touch),commercial importance, cultivation, chemistry, medicine and nutrition areall well covered.

As a final enticement, under "Curiosities"are collected all the myths, legends, and tales that have fascinated herbenthusiats throughout time.

If there is one book that all herbenthusiasts should have, it's this one! ... Read more

Stunning photographs of gardens and flowers and an informative text explain time-honored techniques for growing herbs and using their medicinal benefits for good health and beauty.Amazon.com Review
It's not likely that you use basil to deter snakes fromentering your home, but it is quite possible that you have takenechinacea in hopes of warding off a cold. And while you most probablyhave cooked with rosemary, you may never have enjoyed its aromatic andtherapeutic qualities in a bath or massage oil. The IllustratedBook of Herbs is a comprehensive, informative, and attractivevolume covering herbs from cultivation in the garden to their myriaduses in the home. The book's breadth of information is impressive and, perhaps more important, is laid out in a straightforward, accessiblefashion.

A directory of herbs, complete with gardening information and culinarydescription, serves as a starting point. If you're interested in thedecorative arts, landscaping ideas abound, as do instructions formaking potpourri, herb pillows, and other fragrantdecorations. Therapeutic uses are covered in detail and arecross-referenced with the ailments for which these herbs have beendeemed effective. And with additional information on aromatherapy andinstructions for making tinctures, teas, ointments, and creams, herbalhealing constitutes an essential and invaluable component of thisreference. Richly illustrated with both color photographs andillustrations, The Illustrated Book of Herbs is an excellentchoice for those who embrace the medicinal, aromatic, and savorypossibilities of herbs. --Matthew Reid-Schwartz ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Tremendous help to this novice
When I started a new hobby of photographing wildflowers, I had no clue on the importance of learning plant families in order to identify them. If I couldn't tell from the picture in a field guide, I was up a creek. "Botany in a Day" was the first book I found that organized the families in a simple, clear way that I could understand and this system has become my main guide for grouping and identification. The herbal information is interesting, but not relevant to my project. I'm very grateful for the help I've received from this book

2-0 out of 5 stars Good intention, disappointing result
This book could have been a gem for people interested in botany and healing plants, but it does not manage to fill this void. The text is not read by a professional botanist (I assume) and incorrect or dubious facts are common.Furthermore, the text is filled with typos and misspellings that could easily have been caught in a simple spell-checking program. The figures are from older literature and are not well reproduced. The aim with this book, to explain botany in a day, is highly recommendable, but I cannot recommend this book in its present shape and quality-level. A completely corrected, re-formatted, and revised edition of this book is needed. For people interested in the plant families of North America I instead recommend the high-quality work of Zomlefer: Guide to Flowering Plant Families.

3-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive guide to plant families
Though definitely *not* a field guide. This book is intended to be an introduction to plant families, and it does a good job at that. All the vascular plant families present in North America are briefly described and identification tips noted. Very few actual species are thoroughly described, though the "medicinal" properties of many species, mostly collected from other sources, are recounted here. This book would be better titled "Herbalism in a Day" as it's long on lists of medicinal uses and short on detailed botanical information. I'm pleased I purchased it, but it would be a inadequate substitute for an actual field guide or flora.

5-0 out of 5 stars Covers over 100 plant families and over 700 genera
Most plant books cover a few hundred species: Botany In A Day covers over 100 plant families and over 700 genera, from edible plants to medicinal plants, providing a focus on herbal plant families which users will find easy and important. No color photos; black and white line drawings serve as the illustration for descriptions which are detailed, from the plant's appearance to the author's experiences using the plant in applications. Botany In A Day is simply packed with information and an invaluable reference for aspiring gardeners and neophyte horticulturalists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Let the cover be your judge!
Contrary to the old axiom, this book actually delivers what it promises on the cover.By spending just one day with this book you'll get a fairly comprehensive understanding of the evolution of plants, their general classifications, and unique properties. The author writes in a very straightforward, concise, easy-to-read style that lets you absorb the information quickly and easily without being burdened with excessive detail.I also thoroughly enjoyed his Gestalt approach to Botany.I purchased this book as a supplement to my college course in Field Botany and discovered a wonderful resource. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, vendor was ideal.
Book was as described. Delivered quickly and in excellent condition. I would gladly reorder again from this vendor.

Book by Rodale Press is detailed for a great number of herbs. It details their uses in medicine, the kitchen or as a health and beauty aid. It discusses how to grow the herb and what to watch for. Very useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of My Favorite Herb books
There are so many things to love about this book.

The photographs are beautiful as well as helpful.
The organization is fantastic, first by keeping things alphabetical, but especially the divided sections about each herb.

Crafts, history, medical uses, chemical properties, and cautions, growing advice, etc.Since I am interested in all of these things, this quickly became a favorite book, and I have given it to many people over the years. It's great for gardeners, beginning herbalists, people who like to make crafts or gifts, and it's also fun to just read.

I especially like the section where they compare safe/dangerous ratings of several of the most commonly used herbs.

Love it.Great place to start, and a very pretty and useful gift.

One thing that could be a negative for some, it focuses on North American herbs and plants. For me, that was a plus, since I like to grow my own.Other people might want to read about my exotic herbs, and for them, this "local" focus could be disappointing. ... Read more

It is a great resource book for trying herbal solutions for infections before resorting to anti-biotics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Self-sufficiency.
Truly useful book that teaches us how to make our own herbal remedies. This is one of my favorite books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful and thorough
This book helped me get a salivary gland staph infection under control. This is a slim, easy-to-read and comprehend book I find as a valuable addition to my other herbal treatment books. And, so necessary in this age of needing a healthy, effective treatment to deal with infections.

5-0 out of 5 stars Herbal Antibiotics- Unique, well written, excellent information
This is an exceptional book that, yes, is not for beginners. That said, it does an extraordinary job of explaining the complex intricacy of microbial existence and function. It provides a list of favored, at times unusual antibiotic herbs, and explicit information regarding the realm each covers. From this book, one can study and glean an essential understanding of how to build a home health chest of herbal antibiotics. As an herbalist, it has augmented my practice in an effective, broadening manner. Many people and animals experience allergy; I have observed that they often tolerate herbs from areas far from the homelands of their ancestors. For this reason, it is important to know a vast array of antibiotic plants that can be custom-considered for individual and situation. He presents several that work beautifully with unusual expertise in specific areas. We have created, and are heading into a time of great microbial problems and illnesses. The greatest challenge of any influenza is the secondary bacterial overgrowth that has the capacity to severely challenge our ability to stay alive. These plants are worthy of our attention and relationship.

5-0 out of 5 stars new insight into bacteria, good info on certain herbs
I have several books on herbs and vitamins. Altho this book is 9 years old, the information about how bacteria become resistant was a real shocker! The author has much more specific information regarding the major bacteria types, what illnesses they relate to, and which herbs and plants (and vegetables) will most directly attack that bacteria. In this age of worldwide pandemics, this stuff is good to know. Also, he does not advocate forgoing antibiotics....just using them more sparingly. Great resource book ... Read more
