Product Description
Over a span of 5,000 years, China has established the world's most extensive pharmacopoeia of medicinal herbs. Through empirical knowledge of nature, practical application, and gradual reasoning based on experience, a system of herbal medicine has evolved that is as highly developed as Western medicinal science. Chinese herbal medicine is a subject surprisingly neglected in current literature. The highly illustrated Chinese Herbal Medicine fills this void, providing the general reader with insight into one of the world's most complex and little-known sciences. It examines the natural flora and fauna on which herbal medicine is based and explains the philosophy that propelled its development. Describing the art and practice of herbal medicine as applied today, it also highlights the potential to combine modern Western diagnosis, and traditional Chinese treatment to form a complete and effective system for both preventative and curative medicine. Chinese Herbal Medicine is based on research provided by contemporary experts, among them Dr. Huang Powen, an herbal physician and acupuncturist, and Dr. Hong Yixiang, a kung fu master and licensed herbal doctor, both based in Taiwan. The text includes a color-illustrated list of 200 major herbs detailing their use, and provides herbal recipes for some common ailments. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good overview, little else...
It is definitely a good overview, and if they gave prizes for design of Chinese Medicine Books, this one woud've won them all. The full color format and abundant pictures and drawings make this book a beautiful gift, but that's about it. Like Reid's other books, it is intended as an informational book for laypersons, with a couple of interesting recipes and well-narrated anecdotes and folktales. You can see in CHM, which predates Reid's other books, that his ideas and convictions regarding chinese "self-healing" and energy medicine were not yet developed. The historical overview of Chinese Medicine is very good. The descriptions of practice, however, are confusing, cursory, and/or brief.

There are a couple of mistakes, too. The page facing the full-page reproduction of Hua To, the physician reputed with the discovery and first use of anesthesics, has pictures of the Five Animal Frolic qigong, erroneously described in the picture quotation as Taijiquan. The Five animal frolic predates taijiquan, and although similar, they should not be confused. The bibliography is very short, and not very good. The recipes are a sampling, not a balanced diet, and the index is neither complete nor useful. The last part of the book is a "materia medica", the practical use of which is negligible. The book is indeed not for practitioners of TCM, and this part attests to it. The selection of items for this section, is an arbitrary mixture of the most common and the most exotic. There is no detailed information on use or preparations of the materials listed, although some of them are used in the recipes described afterwards. The glossary and the categorization of the herbs and other substances is correct, though.

Reid is a very opinionated author, although a knowledgeable one, and he doesn't restrain himself much on his views. There is a comparative description of two physicians, where Reid contrasts Taoist and Confucian outlooks on the practice of medicine. It's a bit simplistic and stereotypical to me, but perhaps it can be useful and informative as a sampling of how medicine is practiced in non-communist China. This book is beautifully designed, and I keep it mostly for the pictures, which are well-chosen and illustrating. If you are looking for information on TCM, though, Ted Kaptchuk's The Web that has No Weaver is a better, deeper introduction to the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great explanation of Chinese Medicine!
Chinese Herbal Medicine by Daniel P. Reid is a wonderful guide to Chinese Herbal Medicine and its philosophies. This is a breif, but understandable summary of the process of diagnosis and treatment from one of the world'smost ancient forms of medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Sourcebook
This is an excellent sourcebook for anyone wanting to understand how herbs help cure (and prevent) cancer. The author is extremely knowledgeable about cancer from both the allopathic and naturopathic realms and offers advice for all patients regardless of their choice of treatment. His approach is not the typical one-size-fits all and he offers advice for the many different stages of cancer and treatment. His respectful tone is particularly engaging and I feel this is the kind of book I will refer to many times in the years to come.

If you have not had any treament or surgery for your cancer, read this book immediately. Yance offers advice about how to prepare your immune system for surgery or eliminate it altogether (if appropriate).I wish I had this information before my surgery and hope this book helps someone make a more informed decision.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate herb book
I've bought many books about herbs over the last 30 years, and this one is the most comprehensive and written with the deepest knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars john rosell
I was diagnosed with Stage four Lung Cancer last month and am undergoing conventional chemotherapy and radiation.I am an herbalist and acupuncturist so I immediately began my search for a reference and a colleague to assist me when the western approaches had done what they could do.I found Herbal Medicine, Healing and Cancer to be a first class resource.Comments that it was not suitable for the lay person, of course did not affect me, although my wife and three lay friends found it very readable.I am half way through conventional treatment and will be contacting either Mr. Yance or one of his colleagues for assistance in planning the second phase of my return to health.

1-0 out of 5 stars Regarding Vitalistic Spiritistic Woo-Woo:
In terms of vitalism spiritism supernaturalism, I particularly enjoy this line: "the organic foods you eat have a spirit of their own, one that will blend with your spirit and strengthen and empower your vital force [p.354]."This one is good too:"when the right herb is selected [...] its vital life force works synergistically with that of the patient [p.004]."Maybe this is my favorite: "a plant, which is a living and breathing entity, has the ability to understand and work in synchrony with the body's internal needs, in harmony with the vital force within us, to heal and give life [p.094]."Generally, 'like curing like,' 'as X' curing 'X,' is known as sympathetic magic (SM).These quotes are of the vitalistic spiritistic supernaturalistic (VSS) herbalistic strain of sympathetic magic (VSSHerbSM).As apposed to the homeopathic strain (VSSHomSM). -rc.

4-0 out of 5 stars Book Review
Several times in the course of completing a 4 year degree in Phyto Medicine I came across the work of Donnie Yance. He is well known for his work in treating cancer with Herbal Medicine. This book provides an excellent insight into his experienced approach and use of Herbal Medicine as an adjuvant to "conventional" treatment. Clearly influenced by the great American physicomedicalist, Eli G. Jones (who treated many cancer patients in the early 20th century - when Herbal Medicine was the conventional medicine), he brings the historical evidence base & treatment approaches up to date and expands upon them in the light of modern scientific research.

For the layperson looking for a reputable source of information on Herbal Medicine in cancer treatment & prevention, this would certainly be one of the books to read. As well as being eminently readable for the layperson it is also sufficiently referenced with primary sources for the use of medical practitioners.

From reading the book it is immediately clear that Donnie is a religious man, often mentioning his beliefs in explanation of his own personal approach to the therapeutic relationship with his patients. Rather than clouding or detracting from the scientific content of the book, it helps repeat a common theme in his treatment approach - "compassion" and "treatment of the person, not the disease".

In short, one of the very few non-conventional medicine books relating to this subject that I have on my bookshelf. ... Read more

This is an excellent resource book. Rosemary gives you natural remedies to common ailments that we all suffer from. Her books are easy to read and comprehend and a valuable addition to any herbal library. I can't say enough good things about her books: she gives you recipies to follow, ways to prepare herbal concoctions in various forms using a variety of bases and her writing is very down to earth.

Here is the however: This book and a few of her others are completely included in her book "Rosemary Gladstar's Family Herbal". The "Family Herbal" includes: Taming Stress & Anxiety, Home Remedies for Everyday Ailments, Recipes for Radiant Beauty, For Children, For Women, For Men and also For Elders and even more information then that - including information on how to prepare herbs, An A - Z Herbal Apothecary, etc...

The only book, where the topic is also touched on in "The Family Herbal", I would purchase aside from "The Family Herbal" is "Herbal Healing For Women" and any of her other books whose titles aren't included in "The Family Herbal"

have around the house all of the time... Buy this book to see what you
need to keep stocked in your medicine closet.
