Product Description
The number of people living with genital herpes is staggering. Nearly 50 million people in the United States have genital herpes, and there are 500,000 new cases diagnosed each year. There is more need for a book on herpes treatment than ever, yet there is a dearth of useful, updated information for the diagnosed.

The Good News About the Bad News: Herpes is a complete guide to living and loving with genital herpes with this core message: a herpes diagnosis is not the end of the world. Written in a positive, honest, and straightforward style, this book shows readers how they can live fulfilling and sexually active lives with the virus. The author, an internationally recognized herpes expert, offers information on understanding herpes symptoms and triggers, treatment options, the latest herpes research, and avoiding transmission to future sex partners. At the end of each chapter, she addresses the most common questions and concerns herpes sufferers have based on her experiences counseling thousands of people with genital herpes in her sexual health clinic and online as the herpes expert at WebMD.com.

The stigma associated with genital herpes can be a powerful disease in itself, and this book addresses the psychological impact on one's self-esteem it can have. The author gives advice for breaking the news to potential partners about herpes, coping with herpes in monogamous relationships, and finding supportive groups and resources.

Just as promised, a great book with tons of information that is readable and understandable. Absolutely recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have book for patients AND providers
As a Family Nurse Practitioner working in women's health, I have found the diagnosis and treatment of herpes especially frustrating. There has always been such confusion surrounding how to screen, treat and counsel patients regarding this emotionally charged disease.Terri Warren has addressed all these issues with years of research and practice as her guide. This book will answer the most common questions posed by patients and providers alike. She gives guidance to the clinician and reassurance to the patient that Herpes is manageable and that patients with this diagnosis have in the past and will in the future live full and rewarding lives.I will be making this book a part of our patient lending library and encouraging fellow providers to do the same.Thank you Terri for sharing your life's work with us.

5-0 out of 5 stars The End of Mis-Information
The author has, at last, written a comprehensive yet understandable guide to this virus. I wish this book had been available when I was first diagnosed in 1993. While I learned a lot more about herpes from this book even after all these years of living with it, the book was most valuable to me as a source of information to my current partner, who does not have the virus. After reading the book, she was able to make an informed, knowledgeable decision about becoming physically intimate. She remains free of the virus, due to both precautions and luck, but fully understands the risks and how to minimize them.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has herpes, or knows someone who does and wants to better understand it.

5-0 out of 5 stars EVERYTHING you need to know about HERPES- BUY THIS BOOK!
WOW, hat's off to Terri Warren, RN, NP! Terri's book tells you everything you could ever want to know about herpes in a caring, girl-friend style dialog filled with absolutely accurate medical information. In a world full of misinformation and false promises of cures, this book is a welcome change. I believe every question that any patient has ever asked me about herpes is answered somewhere within this book. Confused about whether or not your diagnosis is accurate? Not clear where, when or how you caught herpes? Feeling isolated and hopeless about your disease? Terri addresses ALL of these issues within her book. I am a board-certified family physician who has become an expert in sexually transmitted diseases, and I will recommend this book to every single patient that I diagnose with herpes (or who has questions about herpes, especially if their partner has it.) Kudos to Terri Warren for writing such an easily readable, accurate, and helpful book!Seductive Delusions: How Everyday People Catch STDs ... Read more

Product Description
Making Peace with Herpes is possibly the most thought-provoking and original book ever written on the subject of herpes. Christopher Scipio started off as a victim of the virus and transformed himself into one of the most experienced holistic practitioners who treats herpes in North America. He is an outspoken advocate of treatment without drug therapy. While it is a subject that many people would rather avoid, Scipio points out that 60% of the sexually active population in North America has either herpes simplex 1 or 2. “70% of the people who have it either don't know they have it, won't admit they have it or are not treating it,” Scipio explains “For some people having herpes can make you feel like a leper. There are no public fundraisers or celebrity spokespersons championing the cause of herpes. In fact you would be hard-pressed to get anyone to admit in public that they have ‘the gift.’ ““The good news and the ironic news is that herpes is one of the easiest diseases to manage naturally. There is absolutely no need for drug-therapy for herpes. This book isn’t just about how to have fewer outbreaks or how to stop having outbreaks; just doing that isn’t enough to be healthy. This book is about holistically healing your herpes and living a healthy, happy and balanced life. Holistic health is about much more than making symptoms go away.”Making Peace with Herpes is a must read for everyone.Whether you have herpes, are in a relationship with someone with herpes or you just want to educate yourself on the worlds fastest growing pandemic; it’s a self-empowerment guide of the first order. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Making Peace with Herpes
It was nice to read about someone else's story, but truthfully, the book is repetitive and doesn't provide that much new information. The same few things are repeated over and over again.Although I understand that repetition can provide emphasis, this was simply redundant.I got it the first three times...Beside that, the book seems more like a pitch to purchase his remedies than anything else since each source in the book refers back to something he is selling.I was hoping for a "deeper" experience from this book but didn't get it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent book
This is a great book for anyone who is suffering from herpes. It gives you a natural approach to gaining control of your outbreaks while helping you deal with the emotional side of herpes. This book truely made a difference in my life and I highly recommend it to anyone who is suffering emotionally from herpes and anyone who wants to try a natural approach to dealing with herpes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful Information
In a constant search to help decrease the number of herpes out breaks I had every year, I purchased this book.It had a lot useful information, however, some of it was a little too much for me.Many of the products discussed had to be ordered directly from the author.I was able to find some of them in my local health food store.I still use the concepts and ideas presented in the book. Through a combination of these ideas and many lifestyle changes, I am happy to say that I have been outbreak free for several months!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Holistic Guide for Herpes Treatment
If you are looking for an alternative to staying on damaging Herpes drugs for the rest of your life, along with a means to enhancing your attacked immune system and coming to true terms with a lifelong STD, this book is a must read. As stated in this book, you have 3 options if you have Herpes: stay on drugs (which does not help your immune system or build your resistance to outbreaks, and has other costly side effects over time), do nothing (which is unethical), or treat your Herpes holistically, which is just as effective if not more so than drugs in controlling outbreaks, and also provides lasting health benefits. Please, read this book before staying on drugs or purchasing all the so-called natural remedies littering the Internet (and sponsored by your favorite pharmaceutical company). Read it for education alone. Read it even if you don't have Herpes but are sexually active.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only book you need to understand living with herpes
Christopher's book was a life saver. It is informative, it responded to my doubts and fears, it answered my questions. It showed me a way to live with herpes holistically. It taught me to think positively about something that was making me very negative.

I have given the book to several family members and friends who have herpes and they have loved it too. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Once comprehensive but now outdated
The most recent edition of this book is now nearly 10 years old.In the medical field, that is a huge amount of time.I bought this book based on the positive reviews posted on Amazon, but ended up more confused after reading it.This book focuses primarily on the medical facts about herpes (if you want a book to help you deal with the emotional issues, this is NOT the book for you), but much of what is discussed is outdated. For instance, the book discusses that not much is known about asymptomatic shedding, but that there probably isn't much risk of infecting a partner unless visible sores are present -- science now knows that this isn't the case (in fact about 70% of people got herpes when their partners had no visible symptoms). The anti-virals such as Valtrex were just coming on the market around the time this book was published and effectiveness of these drugs wasn't well known at that point.A few days of research online will educate you far better than this book will about treatment and reducing the risk of transmission.

I did like some of the medical details regarding rarer symptoms -- this book does go much deeper than any information you will find on herpes resources online. This book also discussed herpes behavior on other part of the body -- something that isn't well discussed in other sources I have consulted.

If this book is ever updated, I think it will oncew again be a very valuable read.Until it's updated, however, the outdated information outweighs the detail it contains.

4-0 out of 5 stars Covered most of my questions
I think the book was well written and I liked the author's writing style. Its a little outdated though. I would like to see an updated edition with more data on the newer anti herpes drugs such as Valtrex. Its been 5 years, so its time to get some newer information out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am not a leper. read this book
Sometimes genital herpes can feel like a life sentence. And an occasionally itchy one at that. I experienced bitterness over the person who gave it to me and for 10 years people have resented me for having it. They believe it's a punishment for promiscuity when in fact I only had three serious partners and one gave it to me.

This book is awesome! It has all the fax AND good advice about handling herpes. Iam more confident about just coming out and saying yes I am herpes sufferer please understand my perspective. I am not a leper. I FEEL A LOT BETTER AND KNOW ONE DAY I WILL FIND SOMEONE. highly recomended

5-0 out of 5 stars The best I have found.
This book is a comprehensive collection of questions that a person(infected or not) probably has. And there are questions that may not haveeven been thought of.

Stepehen Sacks "speaks" to the reader ina way that is humane and almost comforting. He answers these questions andpresents the facts in a straightforward, realistic, non-judgemental andresponsible way.

Some things this book explainsare:

Symptoms.

Medical aspects of infection/ reinfection (in a wayeasily understood by those not in the medical profession.)

Type 1 vs.Type 2.

Means of transmission.

Management of the virus.

Asymptomatic vs. having symptoms and not knowing it.

Herpes andcancer.

It also addresses pshcological concerns and neonatalconcerns.

It contains color plates that visually exemplify the virus.

This book will allow those who read it to have the knowledge they needto protect themselves and their loved ones.

Read this book with yourhighligter and a notepad by your side.

5-0 out of 5 stars As an STD Patient Advocate...
and as a person who has been living with Herpes for nearly 7 years, I would highly recommend this book to anyone. It's not just for those who have experienced the physical issues that surround an STD diagnosis; it delves much deeper into the psychological and emotional aspects as well.

This book is a great resource for those living with an STD and provides as much of a step-by-step process to emotional recovery as any I have read.

I would highly recommend that anyone who is single and dating to pick up this book and read it cover to cover, perhaps even a couple of times. It will prepare you for the day when one of my 60 Million peers approach you with "The Talk" where they will disclose their own personal status and allow you to make a well informed decision on whether to continue the relationship or not.

Be sure to purchase your own copy and not borrow it, you will want to use a highlighter.

I found this book at the American Social Health Association (ASHA) site after I was diagnosed with HSV.I was lucky to have a physician who recognized my sores immediately and prescribed the proper medication (Valtrex). The virus was suppressed within 5 days.Herpes is not a death sentence nor is it "dirty" as the social stigmas would have you believe.Get this book. Get the appropriate treatment. You will be fine!

I found the book very easy to read, and it provided a wealth of information. It not only outlines what Herpes is but offers insight into how and why people respond as they do when they find out they have it. It also covers how to tell a potential partner and, more importantly, how to limit the risk of transmission.

When a person is newly diagnosed, they can become overwhelmed with all the misleading information and even horrific photos they may find on the internet. This book is a means to minimize the confusion.

5-0 out of 5 stars "A great alternative resource for Herpes - very informative!!"
This book is what all of the other herpes self-help books are not.It is also not what the other books are.The writing style is a bit technical but the content is understandable by non-medical people like me.It covers a discussion of many of the "alternative" treatment modalities strictly from the standpoint of how well they are or are not documented in scientific and medical literature. The author makes no claims about miraculous cures and generates no sales pitches, but he has gone to considerable effort to dig up some promising alternative treatments that are also effective for other conditions too. Some of the supplements and herbs have a lot of documentation supporting them and some have very little.Just the facts clearly laid out.

I know several individuals who are using BHT to suppress their herpes outbreaks with complete success and no apparent side effects.I wish I had read this book when my grandmother was suffering from her shingles.I highly recommend it!

2-0 out of 5 stars A reference that is almost, but not quite, there
I've suffered from cold sores for years, and have tried all sorts of treatments and read as much as I can on the subject. I came across this book and really hoped it would help. But, unfortunately, it falls short on several levels.

One other reviewer noted that there are numerous typos, and this is true. I found a number of typos, odd formatting, and other type-related errors. Since this is an updated version of a previous book, I would have thought these would have been corrected. Again, I could live with these type of errors if the information was worthy.

Overall, I rate this book as "fair." There is good information here, though it may not be presented in the best way. The author begins with an overview of the herpes virus, then presents the current drugs/topical methods of treatment in medicine. However, the focus of the book is natural treatment. She lists a number of supplements to support the immune system, then moves on to treating an outbreak (such as using congealed red wine as a topical treatment).

Other (somewhat obvious) methods of treatment are discussed, such as reducing stress, exercising, and doing yoga. A fair chunk of the book covers diets. For those of you familiar with cold sores, you might be aware of eating foods with more lysine and less arginine in them. I can understand that. She also discusses reducing (or eliminating) things like white sugar, corn syrup, and processed foods. Again, no problem and it's good for overall health. Where it gets confusing is when she starts talking about other diets and the glycemic index. One section says to avoid whole oats, while another says it's good. So which one do I believe?

The order of some of the chapters is a bit out of whack. For instance, toward the end of the book she discusses good hygiene. I think that would have made more sense to include before the chapter on topical treatment, since cold sores are very contagious upon outbreak.

I would not suggest that someone who is a beginner read this book. I think it would be confusing. If you've read a little on herpes before, give it a try, with the above caveats.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic resource for everyone with this virus
Loads of info on what herbs, vitamins, foods and exercises to help manage the virus.

Presentation is clean and organized. I continue to use as a reference to stay free from outbreaks.

5-0 out of 5 stars I can't imagine not giving this book 5 stars

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time.
I bought this book because I would like to keep my little herpes friends in check through diet and exercise rather than with drugs.I found this book very poorly edited and irritating to read.I would have beeen willing to overlook this had there been any new or insightful information that couldn't be found on Wikipedia. There isn't.Avoid processed foods, exercise regularly and try not to get stressed out.Imagine that.Save yourself the2 hours it will take to read this book and go play with your lover/dog/cat instead. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A colleague's perspective
This book is accurate, easy to read, and written by a very well respected HSV researcher. It is slightly varied from most herpes books because is told from the perspective of a pediatrician. The size makes it approachable and easy to read in a short time, too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Medically Useful, Personally Dry
* In general, this book helped me and my partner to understand the basic clinical facts and some lesser known clinical information about herpes, transmission, symptoms, treatment, etc. * Re: transmission:The author offers perspectives which surprisingly contradict some commonly held ideasabout what is "safe" and "not safe", which makes thisbook particularly useful, if not a bit scarey. * Re: legal issues:Thesection on disease transmission and the ethics of disclosure is also welldone and important. The author cites a case where someone who was lied toabout a partner's STD status was awarded $600,000 in damages for pain andsuffering, given the lifetime effects of herpes transmitted without honestdisclosure. * Re: approach and tone:The book's appeal would have beenincreased with a more personal tone, with the author's voice addressed tous folks out here grappling with these difficult issues, and often at riskfrom partial knowledge and word-of-mouth guidelines. As it is the book israther dispassionate, as if the busy physician author had transcribed aseries of medical school lectures. * Re: also needed:Colored photographsof what typical outbreaks look like would have been very useful, as anaddition to his useful black & white line drawings of virustransmission details.A good bit more could also have been provided aboutdetails of "safer sex" and relationship issues since we most needthat out here in the real world. * Re: bottom line:As a clinical medicalfact source it is an excellent and useful book. ... Product Description
Herpes zoster (shingles) is a serious neurocutaneous disease caused by a reactivation of latent varicella-zoster virus (VZV). It has been underestimated in terms of its burden, particularly in the elderly population and in immunocompromised patients, who can develop severe complications such as postherpetic neuralgia, meningitis or optic nerve damage. This book compiles state-of-the-art reviews on herpes zoster and VZV by leading clinicians and researchers in the field. They cover the molecular biology, latency and reactivation of the virus as well as the diagnosis, clinical manifestations, epidemiology and therapy of VZV infection. Infections in high-risk patients (immunocompromised hosts and bone marrow recipients) and pregnant women are considered in detail. Emphasis is also given to the direction of future research efforts which will be focused on the very early prevention of chronic zoster pain by combined antiviral and analgesic therapy, and on the control of herpes zoster by administering a VZV-specific vaccine.Providing a valuable update on current strategies to diagnose, treat and prevent herpes zoster, this book is of special interest to clinical virologists, dermatologists, neurologists, gerontologists, pediatricians, ophthalmologists, otologists and general physicians. ... Herpes Simplex contrasts the image of the condition presented in the media with the medical and epidemiological evidence, and discusses ways in which the distress associated with the condition can be alleviated.

The book examines the impact of diagnosis and then explains the roles of accurate information and empathic support, medical treatment and support groups in learning to live with recurrent symptoms. It then uses the experiences of people with the condition to illustrate how the meaning of herpes simplex and response to the symptoms alters in association with life changes. The final chapters review psychosocial research, discuss the importance of the Herpes Viruses Association in acquiring a store of knowledge about people's experiences, and highlight the significance of herpes simplex as a public health problem. ...
