Boys Town publishes FANTASTIC books on managing students and their behavior, but this book really hits on the challenges inner city teachers face. As teachers, we have to create positive classroom cultures that allow our students to have a safe place to learn and feel accepted. This book does such a great job at walking a teacher through the process of handling tough situations and creating a learning environment.I used this book all the time during my 1st two years teaching. You should check out other Boys Town books. ... Product Description
This series will produce one issue annually and focus on selected themes each year. Each monograph will highlight the most comprehensive and robust theory and practice. The Executive Board and membership of the Family, School, Community Partnership Special Interest Group of the Amer-ican Educational Research Association serves as the sponsor of this series.

This group will determine the themes and topics for each monograph. The theme for this first monograph is "Promising Practices for Family Involvement in Schools." This volume will address major frameworks for understanding family involvement and government support of family involvement projects in the initial chapters. The following six chapters present a theoretical base for understanding school, family, and commu-nity partnerships and research supporting promising practices. Included within each chapter are examples of research in action, focusing on spe-cific interactive activities or programs designed to bring families and schools together. Such promising practices are organized into chapters dealing with two-way home-school communication, family literacy projects, school-site parent centers, parent- school collaborative governance, and family-school education programs spanning infancy through young adult-hood. The monograph concludes with a chapter on teacher preparation for work with family, school, and community partnership issues.

Besides their research expertise, each author brings a unique back-ground as classroom teacher, parent, and community social advocate to their writing. Individually, most of us have spent our early professional years within the classroom, acquiring the value of connecting home with school for the benefit of the children. As parents and grandparents, we have advocated for parental interests within the school. As community advocates, we strive for collaborative communication across groups who serve children and their families. We invite you to share our passion for working with families and community groups within our schools. ... Read more

Product Description
Getting Our Kids Back on Track is a no-nonsense guide for achieving academic success written by an acclaimed expert in the study of motivation and achievement in children. In this indispensable resource, author Janine Bempechat claims that the so-called self-esteem movement has actually worked to undermine academic excellence in our nation's schools. As an alternative, she offers parents clear-cut advice and details step by step how to create a structured, predictable, and consistent home environment that will inspire children to reach their full intellectual potential.

Amazon.com Review
A highly readable and practical guide to achieving that delicate balance of academic excellence and high self-esteem, Getting Our Kids Back onTrack is a realistic look at today's families and their frustrations intrying to "do it all." Full of stories from all kinds of families, examplesabound of different parenting styles, teaching methods, and children'spersonalities. None of these is presented as being "right" or "wrong"--butthe author doesn't hesitate to offer suggestions. From homework battles tooverbooked sports activities, everyday occurrences are examined andquestioned: is it necessary, for example, to spend four hours each dayshuttling kids to sports practice, or is there a better way of spendingthat time? Topics are relevant from kindergarten through the teens, andtend to focus on clear communication and regular examination of prioritiesto help families stay on track. For quick reference, author JanineBempechat includes an appendix of questions that relate to eachchapter--questions to ask both yourself and your children's teachers. WhileBack on Track is an excellent starting place for longer dialogues, there are no quick answers to questions like "How much importance am Iplacing on my children's education relative to other activities in theirlives?" and "What do you think are my children's strengths, and how do youthink I can encourage their development in those areas?" Still, the storiesare warm and humorous, and the book as a whole is encouraging. --JillLightner ... Read more

Product Description

This book looks in depth at the emerging issue of cyber-bullying. In this increasingly digital world cyber-bullying has emerged as an electronic form of bullying that is difficult to monitor or supervise because it often occurs outside the physical school setting and outside school hours on home computers and personal phones. These web-based and mobile technologies are providing young people with what has been described as: ‘an arsenal of weapons for social cruelty’.

These emerging issues have created an urgent need for a practical book grounded in comprehensive scholarship that addresses the policy-vacuum and provides practical educational responses to cyber-bullying. Written by one of the few experts on the topic Cyber-Bullying develops guidelines for teachers, head teachers and administrators regarding the extent of their obligations to prevent and reduce cyber-bullying. The book also highlights ways in which schools can network with parents, police, technology providers and community organizations to provide support systems for victims (and perpetrators) of cyber-bullying.
