Wonderfully insightful
We have an appointment with Mr. Fontaine for our son and thought we should probably read one of his books.We were pleased to read how he conducts his initial interviews and what his thought process is behind it. He also provides a great explanation of what homeopathy is and isn't.I've struggled in the past on how to explain it to family and friends, but now it is easier.

useless information and worst written "book" I've ever seen
I got this hoping for even one new idea on managing a sinus infection, I figured for $5 why not see. It wasn't worth the $5 I paid for it on the kindle, It wouldn't have been worth $0.05.The chapter titles seem fine and reasonable, until you get past the first chapter.The information repeats from section to section, it reads more like a teacher took a bunch of poorly researched papers from students and made each it's own chapter than a well written book.Some chapters send you to see your Dr. immediately when you have symptoms, others suggest home remedies first and only going to the Dr. after two weeks.There are no references, and there is no information why this person is qualified to give you their disjointed information to begin with.

While some of the advice is sound (such as good overall health will make you more healthy in general, and avoiding irritants to help avoid sinus infections) even that is presented multiple times in different ways without changing really what you are seeing. The homeopathic section didn't even use the common remedy names, but called out the substance inside the remedies, making sure you couldn't even use it to go find one of the three remedies listed if you thought that was what might help. Some sections send you to research on the internet -- I didn't need to spend $5 to tell me that.

There are much better books out there, from much more (apparently) qualified individuals.I would suggest this Sinus Survival: The Holistic Medical Treatment for Allergies, Colds, and Sinusitis as a much better place to start. ... Read more

But while I find the philosophy of homeopathy to represent an understanding of the nature of healing itself, an understanding of philosophy without an understanding of the homeopathic remedies themselves—that which we call the Materia Medica—won't help you when you have a cold and need to know what remedy to take and how to take it. So here's a piece on one of our most important remedies for both acute and chronic illnesses, Sulphur. It is one of the first remedies that students of homeopathy hear about, and one of the remedies that belongs in every home kit. This booklet tells why master American homeopath J. T. Kent taught his students, "When I prescribe, I prescribe Sulphur."

Sulphur is a particularly important remedy for Vinton McCabe. It was the first remedy that he was given when he visited a medical professional who practiced homeopathy. Within five days after taking that remedy, McCabe noticed such an improvement in what had been considered, to that point, an incurable case of Irritable Bowel Syndrome that had moved well on its way toward Crohn's Disease. It has now been over a quarter century since McCabe has had a bout of IBS. As he likes to point out in his classes, he has not had to take medical of any sort—allopathic or homeopathic—to treat the condition because, as he puts it, “Once you have been cured homeopathically, you have been totally cured. And the whole idea of homeopathic treatment, unlike allopathic, is to get you well and get you off all medication as soon as possible.”

another engaging read about a subject you might not have expected
I have read several of McCabe's regular books, and recently discovered he is publishing these "McBooklets" about subjects that are more off the beaten track.Whether or not you have immediate need for the information, McCabe is the kind of writer who makes these subjects interesting to read.It reminds me of picking up a magazine at the dentist's office and having to steal it so you can finish the article.This one is about gender, and includes an element of rumination on the whole idea of gender and how it is changing.Sort of an anthropological view, plus you get the homeopathic information along with it.Highly recommended. ... I have read the book and I work with this method. I think it is a very good book for parents with autistic children. It explains in a very clear manner the possible onset of autistic behaviour and the steps you can make to treat this children, at best with the help of a CEASE-therapist. Excellent resource
This book is an excellent resource for people who do not want to be duped by "alternative" medicine peddlers.I see all the negative reviews by the AltMed merchants.As usual, they do not offer specific rebuttals; because they cannot.Some of them whine about Stephen Barrett (MD) who was not the author!Get a clue.

A Consumer's Guide to "Alternative" Medicine belongs in every library.

There can be no 'Alternative' in science. Either something works or it doesn't.
You can't have 'alternative' biology and 'alternative' physics, but yet the Cult of 'Alternative' medicine seems to think they are immune to scientific analysis, empirical testing, facts and all those other "nuances" that get in the way of their faith.

I see the majority of the reviews come from this Cult of true believers who no doubt found this searching for more scripture to preach to them. "What's this? Something that goes against my preconceived notions? Blasphemy!"

In actuality this book is NOT an attack-piece. It is a series of findings compiled by licensed professionals taken from well-documented, peer-reviewed, established sources such as JAMA and many other medical journals who used methods such as double-blind testing and chemical analysis to reach their conclusion. You see in science, the conclusion comes AFTER the research. This is the fatal flaw in the 'alternative' medicine field: much like with so called 'Christian' science, they have established the conclusion first and then seek to bend the 'evidence' to reach their pre-conceived end. (i.e. The Earth is only 600 years old this is why carbon-dating MUST be inaccurate). That is, of course, when they even ATTEMPT to use science to explain their outrageous beliefs. More often than not 'alternative' health is based on secondary sources (my friends mother swears the blood of a virgin cured her hangnail!) or ancient scripture (what worked in 16th century rural Asia MUST be better than today because those Asians were SO in tune with their bodies and so mystical and wise!) and ignores all evidence to the contrary (hangnails clear up naturally and 16th century rural Asia wasn't the healthiest place to be.)

Unfortunately this belief has permeated into society and has gotten away with a lot of fraud and false-hope by becoming an unquestioned 'alternative' to serious treatment. The book focuses in on how this developed as well as what causes a person to accept the irrational claims made by 'alternative' medicine con artists like Deepak Chopra and Andy Weil. The information in this book can be a great source of knowledge and comfort for any person who is seeking a truthful and honest look at alternative medicine and finds themselves awash in a sea of new age health books written with no sources or references and 'alternative' health gurus and self-proclaimed 'doctors' who speak like children and never back anything up.

A Poorly Written Book...
The author, a de-licensed psychiatrist, wrote this book with no qualificatiosn whatsoever.He has no understanding or education in alternative medicine.The book is merely the rant of an uneducated dimwit.Given the author's lake of qualifications, it is not surprising that the content lacks any evaluation of actual treatment.The fact that Psychiatry and traditional medicine has been under fire for some time for its ineefectiveness is completely un-addressed.The book's content is so malicious particularly in that it attempts to keep people who need effective altnerative medicine from getting it.If you really need to learn about altnerative medicince I wouldn't bother with this book.

Biggest quack
Barrett has no qualifications to judge alternative medicine. He is clearly a lobbyist for the status quo. If you are interested in alternatives, you will not get any useful information here.
