Description:
Limited storage capacities impose important restrictions in production planning and scheduling that can be used to control the work-in-process and must be taken into account when feasible schedules are to be generated. In this paper we consider a deterministic scheduling problem with limited intermediate storage. Contrary to other approaches known from the scheduling literature the intermediate storage is measured in material quantities that are associated with the jobs. Thus, a different consumption of space by the jobs inside the storage can be considered. Three heuristics are presented that are capable of taking into account limited intermediate storage. The procedures offer the opportunity to control the work-in-process formed by the jobs that wait for processing or are being processed in the production system. ... Read more

Product Description

The “Encyclopedia of Buddhism” provides a comprehensive overview of one of Asia's most important religious and social forces, describing the Buddhist worldview, basic teachings and practices, history, and the different schools and sects. This intriguing set illuminates a religion that is a mystery to most Westerners by exploring Buddhist scriptures, art, architecture, saints, demons, monastic orders, festivals, rites and ceremonies, as well as the different forms Buddhism has taken in different parts of the world, and how it has blended with other religions like Shinto, Confucianism, Daoism and Christianity.

Description:
A central challenge to monetary business cycle theory is to find a solution to the problem of persistence in the real effect of monetary shocks. Previous research has identified separately specific factors and intermediate inputs as two promising mechanisms for generating the persistence in a staggered price-setting framework. By examining a staggered price model that features both specific factors and intermediate inputs, this paper finds an offsetting interaction between the two individually promising mechanisms, which leads to a cancellation of much of the impact of each in propagating monetary shocks. This finding posits a challenge to the search of robust monetary transmission mechanism for solving the persistence problem. ... Read more

Description:
Communities containing species that are not niche differentiated require some mechanism to avoid the expected competitive exclusion of all but one or a few species. Predator pressure has long been held to be one of those mechanisms. Here, we show that the critical feature of predation is not its intensity, but its degree of specialization. Neither highly specialist nor highly generalist predators are effective at deterring competitive exclusion, but rather predators that exhibit an intermediate level of polyphagy can effectively provide such a mechanism. ... Description:
This paper examines the relationship between intra-industry trade in intermediate products, pollution and increasing returns. We develop a two-country model in which production occurs in two stages, final and intermediate good production. Intermediate goods are produced under monopolistic competition and final good production exhibits increasing returns with respect to the number of varieties of intermediates. Pollution occurs in the production of the final good when polluting intermediates are used. We analyze the effects of international trade in intermediate products on pollution, output and welfare under an endogenous tax scenario and with two types of pollution functions. The results show that, because of increasing returns, international trade either leads to lower total pollution in each country or lower pollution per unit of output in at least one country. In addition, intra-industry trade causes countries to import the environmental quality of their trading partners. ... Read more

Description:
The North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW), source water (Oyashio Intermediate Water; OYIW) of which originates east of the southern Kuril Islands, plays an important role in the carbon cycle of the Pacific Ocean. The spatio-temporal changes of NPIW, however, have yet to be clarified. Because of OYIW flowing in the Oyashio region, from east of the southern Kuril Islands through south of Hokkaido to east of Honshu, it is important to understand past bottom water changes at intermediate depths of this region for study of the past NPIW. Two sediment cores, GH02-1030 and MD01-2409, were collected from south of eastern and central Hokkaido. Lithology and physical properties of the cores recorded well the surface and bottom water conditions. Higher diatom productivity in the surface waters led to diatomaceous sediments with higher water contents and lower grain densities during the last deglaciation and late Holocene. These lithological changes occurred not only at the two studied cores but also at several other sites along the western margin of the NW Pacific. Benthic foraminiferal assemblages and occurrence of parallel lamination indicated such a dysoxic bottom water condition during the last deglaciation. Absence of lamination in the late Holocene horizon suggested a somewhat higher dissolved oxygen concentration in bottom water than that during the last deglaciation. On the basis of benthic foraminifer assemblages corresponding to strengthening of intermediate water circulation inferred from coarsening of sediment grain size and decreasing of sedimentation rate indicating stronger winnowing effects, it appears that the bottom water oxygen level increased during the Younger Dryas cold period. ... Product Description
This digital document is a journal article from Cities, published by Elsevier in 2004. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
Urban agglomerations continue to be defined primarily by spatial and demographic criteria which signal their position within the domestic and international urban networks. We consider that these criteria are overly static, and lack indicators of both the potential inherent in medium-sized cities, and the risks they are prone to. On the occasion of a research action project conducted jointly with the Urban Management Program for Latin America and the Caribbean (PGU-ALC/HABITAT), we attempted to gain a deeper understanding of medium-sized cities in order to see more clearly what varied relations they entertain with their immediate or more distant environment. There are different aspects to the integration of an urban community in a specific context. Territorial occupation and demographic expansion, as well as urban planning and development, socio-economic, political, institutional, environmental, and cultural aspects, infrastructures and services. All these interact at different levels-local, regional, national and international. The interplay between these various aspects and their relative importance also determine intermediate cities, which act as an interface to the outside world. In doing so, they face constraints arising from ill-controlled urbanisation processes, but are also rich in possible strategies for new opportunities, exchange, and trade. Results from the local observatories set up by the PGU in four Latin American cities led us to conclude that urban players still lack an understanding of intermediate cities, and are thus incapable of effectively integrating the concept in their political development strategies. Most public, scientific or associative participants in such projects view the process of ''intermediation'' as a local marketing phenomenon that aims to ''sell the city'' in the globalised market. Economic deregulation and political decentralisation have eroded the importance of the central state and of the national territory it is meant to administer. These increasingly lose their reference value for urban players, who view their future in international terms. In contrast to the brilliant future promised to intermediate cities in the global free market, the real problems of the outside world that confront both authorities and inhabitants are completely obscured. They include such major issues as migratory movements and their impact on territorial planning and urban infrastructure, or the degradation of the urban environment, of natural resources and of the surrounding rural regions. To this day, the concept of intermediate cities is misused. In fact, it seems to cause more confusion than anything else when defining urban systems and understanding their dynamics. If it were better understood, its typological characteristics and appropriate indicators could turn it into a formidable instrument for analysing urban reality and managing the interaction between cities and their environment. ... Product Description
This digital document is a journal article from Journal of Hazardous Materials, published by Elsevier in 2006. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
The degradation of three phenolic compounds, 4-chlorophenol, 4-nitrophenol and phenol by Fenton-like process was divided into three phases: the initiation phase, the fast phase and the termination phase. Compared with the initiation phase, the degradation of phenolic compounds, the consumption of H"2O"2 and the generation of Fe^2^+ accelerated dramatically in the fast phase. At the end of the fast phase, about 80% phenolic compounds were removed. After then, the degradation rate slowed down sharply due to the lack of H"2O"2. The enhancement in the fast phase was caused by the role of some hydroquinone-like intermediates such as hydroquinone, catechol and 4-chlorocatechol, which were identified to reduce Fe^3^+ to Fe^2^+ quickly. The fast degradation of phenolic compounds promoted the formation of intermediates, thus the concentration of Fe^2^+ increased, and vice versa. A reaction pathway describing the role of the hydroquinone-like intermediates was suggested. ... Read more

We introduce tariff and quota revenues and the substitutability of all inputs including two intermediate inputs. We focus on Cournot-Nash equilibrium and show that if the price elasticity of demand for the final good is smaller (respectively greater) than the elasticity of substitution between the intermediate inputs, the output of the duopolist in the protected country is smaller (respectively greater) under a quota than under a tariff. ... Description:
This work investigates the feasibility of ozonation for destroying phenol and removing organic matter in saline media. The reaction lumped kinetics was followed using the GLKM (General Lumped Kinetic Model). The main intermediate compounds were: catechol, hydroquinone, 4,4'-dihydroxybiphenyl, and 4-bromophenol. It could be noted no significant differences in phenol degradation, mineralization rates, and toxicity removal up to 2gL^-^1 of salt. So, ozonation appears to be a technology that can be used in low salinity media, which is characteristic of waters destined to reuse and recycling programs inside industries. ... Read more

From the author: We consider a monopolistic supplier's optimal choice of two-part tariff contracts when downstream firms are asymmetric. We find that the optimal discriminatory contracts amplify differences in downstream firms' competitiveness. Firms that are larger--either because they are more efficient or because they sell a superior product--obtain a lower wholesale price than their rivals. This increases allocative efficiency by favoring the more productive firms. In contrast, we show that a ban on price discrimination reduces allocative efficiency and can lead to higher wholesale prices for all firms. As a result, consumer surplus, industry profits, and welfare are lower.
