From the supplier: The food industry is witnessing the introduction of more cost-effective aseptic intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) that use innovative designs and new materials. Spartanburg Stainless Products Inc believes that users look for low cost of shipping, accessibility of the valve area and stack, ease of use, or nestability in the warehouse or on the truck in their IBCs. Aside from stainless steel IBCs, Spartanburg also makes the SuperCube, a sealed aseptic bag liner inside a polyethylene container, and the bag-in-box, plywood IBC. Meanwhile, Sonoco IBC offers the Sonobulk aseptic system, a blow-molded, high-density polyethylene bottle inside a steel cage.

Description:
The Preventing Alcohol-Related Convictions (PARC) program is a novel educational curriculum for first-time DUI offenders, with the ultimate goal of reducing DUI recidivism. It differs from traditional DUI education and prevention programs in that it does not suggest to DUI offenders that they must abstain from alcohol entirely or control their drinking to prevent a future DUI; rather, it teaches students to prevent a future DUI by not driving their cars to drinking events. Thus, the emphasis of the curriculum is on controlling driving rather than controlling drinking to avoid future DUI convictions. The implementation of the program is ongoing throughout the state of Florida. The current randomized study focused on intermediate outcomes relevant for DUI recidivism; specifically, individuals' readiness for change regarding drinking and driving, and their endorsement of a PARC planning and action approach (controlling driving) versus a traditional approach (controlling drinking). The current research demonstrated that the PARC program is effective in moving participants toward more readiness for change and toward a strategy of planning ahead to avoid driving to any venue in which drinking may occur. Future research will assess the ultimate effect on DUI recidivism. ... Read more

From the author: Objective: There is considerable evidence that the amplitude of the heritable P300 event-related potential (ERP) is reduced in alcoholics and their alcohol-naive children. Low voltage alpha (LVA), a heritable resting electroencephalogram (EEG) trait present in 7-14% of the population, has been shown to be associated with alcoholism and anxiety disorders. A few studies have demonstrated a modest correlation between pre-stimulus alpha power and P300 amplitude. We aimed to test this finding in community volunteers, hypothesizing that LVA would be associated with low P300 amplitude. Method: Digitized resting EEG was recorded at the central parietal site (Pz) from 85 male and 113 female community volunteers (120 unrelated). ERPs were elicited at Pz by auditory and visual oddball paradigms. All participants were interviewed with the Schedule for Affective Disorders, Lifetime Version (SADS-L) and assigned blind-rated psychiatric diagnoses according to the American Psychiatric Association DSM-III-R criteria. Results: LVA participants (including alcoholics and nonalcoholics) had significantly lower auditory and visual P300 amplitudes. Absolute alpha power was modestly correlated with auditory and visual P300 amplitude and was associated with 9.4% and 4.6% of the variance, respectively. Conclusions: The association between LVA and low P300 amplitude, two distinct electrophysiological traits, suggests that, at least in individuals with the LVA trait, some aspects of resting, unstimulated brain activity and activated brain function in the form of attentional response may be fundamentally related.

Description:
Increased coefficient of friction led to malfunction of many and destruction of some maintenance-free bushings of intermediate and lower guide vane bearings at a hydroelectric power plant in Brazil. Analysis of surfaces of failed bushings revealed the presence of three types of deposits. The contact zones between bushings and the guide vane axis were covered with a thin black graphite film. The remaining bushing surface was covered by a mix of yellow-red coloured deposits, which contained a large proportion of iron-oxide-rich microbial biofilms, and green-coloured deposits, which consisted largely of copper oxides. Biofilms sampled from both the inside and the outside of the bearings contained 75% iron oxides by weight. The iron oxide deposits produced by these biofilms were identified as the primary cause of increased friction resistance between the bushing surface and the guide vane axis. Iron deposition within biofilms was made possible by the action of iron-reducing bacteria in the anaerobic zone of the reservoir immediately in front of the turbine intakes. These bacteria enriched the anoxic reservoir water with Fe(II) and the relatively small oxygen concentrations in turbine feedwater prevented the complete oxidation of Fe(II) in the penstock. Water-proofing of the bearing seals would prevent water penetration into the bearings and biofilm formation on the bushing surfaces and thus avoid the type of failure observed at this plant. ...
