1-0 out of 5 stars very basic HR information
I purchased this book hoping it would provide insight into human resources issues that occur when running a business.Unfortunately, it doesn't.It offers little or no "how-to" or useful information.

Renckly's book does provide very basic information, but offers very little that is compelling or informative. In most cases, it simply rehashes common sense.

The most useful portion of the book details what front line managers SHOULD NOT ask in a hiring interview.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent small business resource
I found this book to be an excellent resource for my small business. It summarizes all of the relevant HR issues for any business, allowing me to choose which ones I need to address in my business. The book includesexample forms and policies and even summarizes legal cases relevant to theHR issue being discussed. It has been a valuable resource for me ever sinceI bought it. ... Read more

Product Description

The European Union is expanding. Wide cultural, political and economic differences within the Union have a significant impact on the management of human resources, so crucial to the success of any enterprise. Businesses within the EU have regularly tried to re-evaluate the context in which they work, and for investors from other continents, notably the US and Asia, the potential for expensive mistakes is only too real.

In this comprehensive new book, the varied and particular challenges for human resource management in the EU are fully explored. Written in conjunction with the European Association for Personal Management (EAPM), the book offers country-by-country analysis from native authors, assessing the contexts faced by businesses working in thirteen different states: from founding EU members like France and Germany, to relatively new entrants like Latvia and Poland. The book also includes a chapter on Turkey, an emerging economy currently outside the Union. The key issues are addressed from both theoretical and practical perspectives, whilst each chapter is also complimented by best practice case studies.

2-0 out of 5 stars Book never arrived.First time I had a bad experience on Amazon
I never received my book from the seller HPB-Ohio.This is the first time that this has happened on Amazon and I am disappointed. After waiting over a month to receive the book, I contacted HPB-Ohio.The reason I am giving two stars is because they responded to my email the next day and offered a full refund (they claim the post office lost the book, which rarely happens and I dont know if that is true, but at least they didnt give me a hassle about the money). If you order from HPB-Ohio, know that they ship USPS (slow boat to China) and you need to keep on top of your order. They will not be monitoring it to make sure it arrives.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not The Greatest for What I Needed for SPHR
I bought this and the phr/sphr practice test books to be included in my sphr certification preparation. It was a waste of money as far as I am concerned.I had to get the SHRM learning system and this almost contradicted some of the material I learned. My very first complaint is the way it is set up.There is a lot of talk about what this person's interpretation of the test is.That wasn't helpful. The 2nd big one is the questions offer an option of d) all of the above. The test doesn't have one of those questions among the 225 on the test. Not any of the tests. So that is deceiving and a lazy way to have 4 choices on the tests in the book.

Take it for what it is worth.I am more than willing to sell my used copy if someone is interested. The disk that comes with it is nice to have to use at home or work while preparing.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Best of the Bunch
In preparation for the SPHR exam, 3 co-workers and myself held study groups using the SHRM LS for 6 months prior to testing. The closer it got to the test date, the more nervous I got.I ended up purchasing this book about a month before the test and I am so glad that I did! This helps explain the HR processes through case study and the practice questions in this book are much closer to the actual test than SHRM LS.However, I still found myself feeling unprepared for the test. The actual test questions are nothing like anything we practiced in the SHRM LS (for 6 months nonetheless) and I felt sure that I had failed.Alas, I did pass (BTW, two of us passed and 2 of us didn't) and I feel that most of the credit should be given to this book (I was the only one to use this book).

If I had to do it again, knowing what I do now, I would just purchase this book and read it cover to cover and take all the test questions. That's it.The SHRM LS just had me studying and memorizing the wrong things.I was overwhelmed and had a constant feeling of "How am I going to remember all of these laws, amendments, case law, etc.?".Well, my advise is DON'T STRESS.Read this book, understand how things apply in the case study and you should be good to go.

GOOD LUCK!

4-0 out of 5 stars The best
I bought a lot of books for this test. This is the one that I liked the best. It was very good. It followed the BOK that you need to take the test. If I would of bought only one book it would of been this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reaource
This was an excellent resource for the PHR test.I just took the test on June 1, 2010 and passed. This was my only study guide. The book was organized very well and helped me to organize my study notes for the test.I also reviewed a friends SHRM book but found this book to be more helpful.I found the test questions are nothing like the practice tests but they do prepare you for the correct answers. ... Product Description
MANAGING HUMAN RESOURCES THROUGH STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS, Tenth Edition, explains how successful companies manage human resources in order to compete effectively in a dynamic, global environment. Long known and respected as a tightly integrated, clear, higher-level text, MANAGING HUMAN RESOURCES THROUGH STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS, Tenth Edition, presents strong organizing themes: strategy, teams, diversity, global issues, and change. These themes are highlighted in interesting boxed features throughout the tenth edition. The text also follows an organizational structure that emphasizes the HR Triad (employee, line manager, HR manager) with the understanding that effective human resource management requires mutual understanding and collaboration among HR professionals, managers, and all other employees. Because organizations differ from each other in so many ways--including their locations, competitive strategies, products and services, and corporate cultures--these experienced authors use many different companies to illustrate how employers address the challenge of managing human resources effectively. Examples of companies in many different industries include Southwest Airlines, Deere & Company, Wegmans, Lincoln Electric, McDonalds, TRW, Steelcase, Google, Novartis, Johnson & Johnson, SAS, Outback Steakhouses, United States Postal Service, UPS, IBM, 3M, Alberto Culver Weyerhaeuser, The Ritz-Carlton, and many others. The authors selected these organizations because they successfully combine a respect for established principles of human resource management with a willingness to experiment and try new approaches, allowing them to succeed year after year. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Generally a Good HRM Textbook
I am using this text for a graduate class in HRM that I am teaching.Generally, the materials are well presented. However, like most HR texts, it is woefully lacking in HR strategy and I find myself expanding in this area.In addition, it refers to the HR triad as line managers, HR and employees. What happened to the alignment with senior management or strategy itself?I realize the authors have used this concept for years, but I am concerned that the continued use of the concept in an HR survey course (where for some students, this is the only HR class they take), reinforces the incorrect notion that HR belongs nowhere near the top of the organization.

4-0 out of 5 stars Managing human resources

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This is a great book that I am using for my management class. My professor said it will be very helpful if you plan on taking the SHRM PHR exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good HRM Material
I have read this book at graduate level as a class material in Human Resource Management. The most obvious priority of Schulers book is its case studies which are developed elaborately and absolutely topic-related. It was my assignment to translate case studies included in this book into Turkish and while I was reading cases, I realized that as I read, I better understood topics. Although cases are impressive in this book, the chapter titled as "The Role of HRM Department in Total Quality Management Process" is not rich in terms of content.

I reccommend this book especially to international students whose English proficiency level is not very high because the language and structure of Schulers book is very simple, accordingly understandable. A good source in the field of HRM. Highly reccommended. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Overly complicated
There is no denying that this book has everything the aspiring human resource manager or theorist needs to know but it is presented in such a style as to be at times virtually unreadable.
Admittedly this is a complex subject but it can be expressed in much clearer terms and indeed has been by other author's on this subject such as Marchington.

In summary this is not a bad book but for someone new to the area or looking for an easily readable summary of the latest developments in this field a more easily digestable text is recommended. This perhaps is one for those people who already have a degree of understanding in this area although it is ironically aimed at those who do not. ... Read more

Product Description
Human Resources for the Non-HR Manager appeals to anyone interested in management issues. The book explains why human resource issues are increasing the responsibilities of front-line managers rather than the HR department. Chapters present the basics of HR including the fundamentals of hiring, performance appraisal, reward systems, and disciplinary systems, so that any manager--regardless of his or her background or functional area--can approach these parts of the job with confidence. The book also covers the latest developments in equal opportunity law and describes the manager's responsibilities in controlling sexual harassment and managing diverse employees, including older workers and employees with disabilities. Each chapter's material is firmly grounded in the current HR academic literature, but the book's friendly, conversational tone conveys basic principles of good practice without technical jargon.

Designed to make the material more accessible and personally relevant, the book includes the following special features:
*Manager's Checkpoints--a series of questions that help the reader apply the material to his or her own organizational context;
*Boxes that describe real-life examples of how companies respond to HR challenges;
*For Further Reading--references to articles published in outlets that bridge the academic-practitioner divide;
*Manager's Knots--presented in a question-and-answer format, these describe typical managerial problems, take the reader into some of the gray, ambiguous areas of HR, and suggest ways to apply the chapter material to real-life managerial dilemmas; and
*An Instructor's Manual available to instructors who adopt the book for classroom use. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to HR
This is a great book for people with no HR background. It covers a lot of ground in an engaging way. The book is organized in small chapters. Each chapter deals with one aspect of the employment cycle, from hiring to firing. The book covers legal aspects of employment (Civil Right Act, American with Disabilities Act, etc.) and practical aspects of human resource management (how to interview, how to setup a compensation system, etc.). There are regular 'manager knots' which present practical problems (and solutions). The chapters end with pointers to further reading.

I was tempted to give this book 5 stars. However I have some minor concerns with it. The book is only an introduction. There are topics that are not dealt with or only to a limited extend. To give some examples: the Labor Fair Standards Act is not mentioned and exit interviews are not considered. I would have liked to see those topics covered.

Overall this is a great introduction to HR issues for people new to human resources. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars HRM: Theory and Practice Interface

In this revised edition Legge adds a new new introduction of 42 pages, though the rest of the book is the earlier edition itself. Shenotes a number of new developments, which, among others, include the following: the private sector services sector has been emerging at a fast pace; the emergence of call centresas a huge industry; Mcdonaldization is taking place; knowledge worker has demonstrated a different set of needs; management of emotions is becoming an important area; there is a major attempt towards conceptualizing the links between HRM, business strategy and firm performance; there is a growing debate on cultural and institutional effects of globalization; the debate on Asian tigers, Japanese keiretsu and Korean Chaebols is giving way to outsourcing to India and China and rising growth rates of these two economies; unions' failure to organize new private sector manufacturing and service sector workplaces; and comprehensive increase in business ethics in general.

Legge continues to point out yawning gaps between the promises of HRM and its practice. Even as the author has stuck to her original arguments on the projected and realistic role of HRM, hernew introductory chapter to the earlier edition will stimulateHRM scholars to further contribute to critical HRM scholarship. By deconstructing the HRM discourse, she had summarily dismissed the claims of HRM. She has not substantially diluted the spirit of the arguments she had put forwardin the earlier edition. For most scholars, the book will surely recast the original debates in the context of the new realities that have been emerging over the years.

But it must be said that even as the book is an intellectual extravaganza in critical HRM,it will certainly not be of much interest to MBA students as the book claims on the back cover; they will be aptto protest vigorously if any teacher prescribes this book to them as it is too heavy for them; and they may also argue that they do not need to go into such perspectives. Rather they are expected to uncritically accept--or are going to be told to so--the competitiveness potential of soft HRM. That is also what industry wants from them. The book is an essential reading for anyone who researches in these areas, given the depth of analysis and rigour that is the hallmark of all writings of Legge.

This collection of original manuscripts–representing a cross-section of the timeliest scholarship in public personnel administration–explores the theme of “problems and prospects” in public personnel administration. The contributions are organized into four broad sections: The Setting, The Techniques, The Issues, and Reform and the Future. Section One focuses primarily on the social, political, economic, and legal trends that have served as catalysts in the transformation of public personnel administration. Section Two is composed of selections that summarize developments in the practice of HRM, with special emphasis on emerging personnel techniques and the ways that traditional approaches to the staffing function are being revised. Section Three discusses and suggests responses to some of the most troublesome or pervasive issues in modern personnel management. The final section assesses the probable trends in the field's future, and analyzes the efficacy of recent reform efforts. For human resource personnel looking to broaden their perspective in the field.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay
This was the second of two books I needed for my Public Human Resources Management, grad-level class. It is 20 separate essays, each on a different topic, compiled into one book.I used this book as a supplement, because I found the main book for the class, "The New Public Personnel Administration" (Nigro, Nigo & Kellough) to be more helpful. This book very dry, it could have used some court cases or case studies to spice it up.I won't use it again after this class.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good textbook for an introductory class
I got this book for an introductory Human Resource Management class I had to take at my university. No complaints with the book. I didnt read it all, but most of what I read was well written.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete and well written Human Resource Management Resource
I was required to use this text book in my Human Resource Management class for my MBA requirements. I do not have an HR background so a lot of the information presented in this book is new to me. The authors do a great job of presenting the material in an easy to understand manner. There are a lot of real life examples and case studies that are interesting to read and help to put the concepts in to perspective.

This book will be a great reference in my professional life. It has employment laws, recruitment strategies, training and placement strategies to name a few. This is a must read for any HR professional and it really brings to focus the need for a stronger HR presence in companies to help them stay competitive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome! Would buy again!
I was so worried when I bought this book. The semester had started and I didn't want to fall behind on readings, so I was hoping for a faster delivery than what was predicted. Thankfully, the book arrived a few days ahead of schedule! It was in great condition, too! I couldn't have been happier.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but needs more thorough text editing.
While this text has the potential to be a very useful tool for practitioners and academics alike, I was a little disappointed to find multiple errors in the text. One critical error was the incorrect citation of a research finding. Specifically, on page 56, it states, "In addition, individuals' motivation (i.e., direction, level, and persistence of effort exerted) is more strongly related to maximum than typical performance (Klehe & Anderson, 2007)." This is not what Klehe and Anderson (2007) found in their study, they in fact found the opposite, which is consistent with motivational theory (that motivation is more strongly related to typical rather than maximum performance).

This incorrect citation makes me wonder how many other research findings they discuss are miscited. I encourage anyone using this text (and any other) to always go to the original research articles to confirm findings before using them to make decisions.

3-0 out of 5 stars Books on PA
Book is a good asset to the PA field, however there are many other books written from a more interactive prospective. Regardless if one is seeking a traditional text book style work on Human Resource Management, this is the book for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Broad and fair
As far as I get to the book I think it is broad and fair enough to allow an understanding of Public Human Resources Management, what I would expect beyond would be some attempts of measuring performance or quantitative models or more specific details in the area.
Best,
Aldo
