4-0 out of 5 stars Honours programme text
This new edition of the classic Bloxall text does not disappoint. I'll be using it for my class of Honours (4th year) students and expect it to provide a basis for lively disucssion.It's not the most entertaining book to read, but substance wins out over "bells-and-whistles" at this level of scholrship.

5-0 out of 5 stars MIGHTY !!!
After reading that book,I said wow.Strong,clear and open minded!Everybody speaking about strategic HRM but neither one able to explain what it is.Well Boxall in my opinione found the right approach to the problem,exiting from the best practices' jungle.A whole book full of strategic insights about HRM,dealing with the main aspects of emploiment relationships.People from one side, the organization on the other an the HR function trying to find out the way to keep them togheter toward the strategic objectives:that's the main theme of the book that passing through a lot of interesting problems opens a lot of door and questions on the field of HR,but really never closing any solution or excluding you to reflect about the matter. I should define it exciting.
Really good value. ... Read more

Product Description
Through its focus on human resource management and organization, The Global Challenge: International Human Resource Management, provides a broad guide on how to manage the process of internationalization, with a particular focus on the transnational firm. In this edition, authors Evans, Pucik and Björkman discuss the “people implications” of traditional strategies for internationalization and how such strategies get executed through human resource management (HRM). They discuss such important topics as: how to manage expatriates from the parent country; how to go about adapting management practices to circumstances abroad; how to localize management; how to recognize and ultimately avoid obstacles in joint ventures; how to expand across borders through acquisitions; how to respond to the contradictory pressures of the transnational firm, where HRM has a critical role to play in enabling managers to resolve these paradoxes in innovative ways; how global competition is changing the nature of management and organization, even for firms operating in domestic markets. The book draws on practical examples from companies that have experienced the real challenges of international HRM. The authors carefully balance these real business applications with a wide scope of academic research. The issues presented in the first edition of this book have been updated throughout with new information from research and practice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Human Resource Selection by Gatewood,Feild and Barrick
It's a very good reference book for Human Resource. Concepts have been explained in a great detail with logical examples and diagrams. A book worth purchasing and having on shelf for ready reference. Human Resource Selection

5-0 out of 5 stars Strong, versatile textbook appropriate for any level
This is one of the strongest selection textbooks available in terms of breadth and depth of coverage. However, what really sets it apart is the accessibility in writing. I know many PhD-level academics and practitioners who have a copy of this book on their shelves, but I would also have no qualms about assigning it to a class of upper-level undergraduates in a selection course. The writing is polished and clearly directed toward students, and any controversial issues are given a good, balanced treatment. It also helps that the authors are quite willing to poke fun at themselves and the intensity with which they approach a topic that, to a student, probably seems obsessively nerdy.

A major strength area for the book is its coverage of job analysis, which includes a "core" chapter that provides a firm grounding and introduces some of the better-known JA methods, followed by a "supplemental" chapter that goes into additional methods that are not as widely used for those who need more detail. The chapter on cognitive ability testing is also quite good and earns points for the frankness with which the authors address the controversies surrounding this topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars The bible of selection! A must have!
Gatewood and Feild have definitely written the authoritative volume on selecting employees. They cover everything: legal issues, measurement,selection decision making strategies, job analysis, and the whole gamut ofselection devices: application forms, biodata, interviews, ability tests,personality tests, assessment centers, integrity testing, and so on and soforth.And they cover these topics IN DEPTH -- not just a brief overview. The countless examples are very helpful.And the authors display a greatdry humor -- the author bios and dedications are priceless (also be sureand check out the graphologist's interpretation of Gatewood's personality,and his responses)!I definitely recommend this book as a text forgraduate and undergraduate classes, and also for the HR person who needs tobeef up their selection know-how.A great reference source full of thelatest selection research -- a must have for every practitioner's andstudent's collection. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A reference book on measurement and evaluation for HR
    "During the last decade, the Human Resources(HR) function experienced drastic change in its role, status, and influence". Jack J. Phillips writes, "Some HR executives recognized the change andstepped up to the challenge. A panel of top-level HR executives recentlyassembled by Personnel Journal agreed that HR is moving away from thetransactional, paper-pushing, hiring/firing support function it has beenand is becoming a bottom-line business decision maker...Peter Druckerpredicted these changes in The Wall Street Journal over ten years ago whenhe asserted that the personnel department, in addition to changing its nameto human resources, must behave quite differently and follow the line modeof behavior rather than the staff mode"(pp.1-5).And hence, he rightlyargues that "from recent articles, reports, books, and interviews onthe subject, seven trends can be identified that have a significant impacton an organization's bottom-line results and the HR function's role in theprocess. These trends include the increased importance of the HR function,increased accountability, organizational change and quality programs,improvement in productivity, adoption of HR strategies, growing use of HR'sinformation systems, and reliance on partnership relationships.Collectively these trends enhance or complement the efforts of the HRdepartment to monitor and improve its contribution to organizationalperformance" (pp.5-6).

    Within this context, he divides his book intofour parts as follows:

    Part I- presents a general framework forevaluating the HR function (Chapters 1-2)

    Part II- presents the issuesinvolved in developing a results-based approach to HR (Chapters 3-4)

    PartIII- focuses on specific ways to measure the contribution of HR (Chapters5-9)

    Part IV- explores data analysis and presentation results.

    One ofthe core concepts of the book, in Chapter 1, he focuses on paradigm shiftsfrom traditional HR approach to a more results-based approach demanded intoday's environment, and summarizes these paradigm shifts necessary for aresults-based approach as follows:

    Traditional Approach:

    (1) Newprograms initiated by request or suggestion of any significant manager orgroup.

    (2) A maltitude of programs in all areas.

    (3) Existingprograms are rarely, if ever, eliminated or changed.

    (4) Countactivities, hours of involvement, number of employees involved, etc.

    4-0 out of 5 stars Does the job
    Purchased this one for a friend.So far she has been using it at school and has nothing but good things to say about it.

    3-0 out of 5 stars Not very good.
    This book is a bunch of separate pieces about HRM. It's not a complete nor recent manual. It's obvious it has been augmented as years have passed by, but not reviewed to form a real manual up-to-date with the state of the art. Specially, chapter 21 about organizational culture is absolutely obsolete.
    It's not worth the price.

    5-0 out of 5 stars a classcial book

    5-0 out of 5 stars Human Resource Management Practice
    The Handbook of Human Resource Management Practice by Michael Armstrong is a comprehensive book on the art and practice of human resource management. The book is well structured and provides a step-by-step guide to the essential principles. I found the book easy to use, to be clear and reflected the current practice to the subject. The book explains management and employee perspective and their interaction in the work place. It also provides a substantial treatment of human resource management practice.

    What I appreciated about this book is that it provides practical advice that I can use in my organisation to improve its effectiveness. I also used it as a reference book in my Doctor of Business Administration course I am currently pursuing. Being based in an African country, what it teaches is very relevant and useful in African organisations.

    The book is divided into eleven parts that cover the whole range of human resource management topics namely:

    * Human resource management
    * Human resource management process
    * Organisational behaviour
    * Work and employment
    * Organisation, jobs and roles
    * Employee resourcing
    * Performance management
    * Human resource development
    * Rewarding people
    * Employee relations
    * Health, safety and welfare
    * Employment and human resource management services.

    I would not recommend the book to those who are looking for basic knowledge about human resource management as the book covers in detail the major issues pertaining the human resource management. However, for those students who are familiar with the subject or have done an undergraduate course on the subject and wish to pursue the subject at postgraduate level, this is the right book for you. You will benefit from the in-depth treatment of the theory and best practices in the area. I enjoyed the fact that the author also covers e-learning, talent management and change management, which are subjects of particular interest to me.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended !
    Human resources professionals will find Michael Armstrong's book practical, helpful and relevant. It discusses all facets of current practice, including such relatively new developments as e-learning and recruiting, and it discusses how you can help your organization implement change. The book would make an excellent college text, since it covers HRM's evolution, principles, theories, practice, research, job descriptions and more. The author seems to have two goals: to provide comprehensive information about human resource management and to persuade upper level managers to integrate HRM into strategic planning. This would empower HR departments to generate broader organizational results. To get the most from this manual, given its textbook style, practitioners may wish to study it chapter by chapter. Since organizational philosophies, functions and practices differ, it even lends itself to further discussion when HRM professionals gather to share ideas and swap proven practices. We think those in the field will derive a great deal of value from this book. ... Read more
