5-0 out of 5 stars Rich full flavor, minimal ingredients, easy to produce
Fantastically flavorful recipes with heartwarming stories. All of the ingredients are easily available at the regular grocery store. If you believe great dishes do not have to have a long list of ingredients, this book is for you. I was truly astounded at the rich and deep flavor produced by so few ingredients! I tried some things out on my in-laws and their friends, who are immigrants directly from Hungary, and they certified the recipes authentic! I can now reproduce those tasty comforting foods I enjoyed in Europe: egg/farina/spaetzle, plum dumplings, fried bread, cucumber salad, etc. As for the calories and such, I wouldn't skimp or substitute anything - just watch the portions and don't indulge everyday. This one is a keeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars As a grandaughter of the Banaters, these recipes are very familiar and nostalgic to me---glad to have them "written" down.I
A wonderful book....familiar recipes from my childhood written down. These "Germans in Hungary" have a wonderful history and culture which I have only lately come to fully understand and appreciate. This book is a special treasure from "the Old Country" and I am so happy June Meyer wrote it and shared it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hungarian Heritage - Grandma's Cooking
The recipes in this cookbook take me back to the days of my grandmother's country kitchen, the smells & flavor's of her Hungarian cooking. She came to the USA from Hungary as a young bride. I can remember her dishes were full of flavor and prepared farm fresh. When we would ask for a recipe she would answer with a a few of those and a bit of that. Nothing was written down. This cookbook is a welcomed addition to my collection. The recipes are authentic and taste as I remember them as a young boy spending my summers on the farm.

1-0 out of 5 stars Keep reading
I admire the respect and curiosity for Hungarian cuisine because it is fantastic. It's a nice try to explore other nations' heritage, but when you write a book about it, make sure that the facts are right. I was born in Hungary, and I've lived there for 20 years, so I know how most of the dishes in this book taste like and what goes in them. Some ingredients are missing from the recipes and the recipes included are just scratching the surface of Hungarian cuisine. Sticking the "Authentic" in front of everything won't actually make it authentic! I had fun reading the Hungarian names of dishes. The spelling is way off! All in all my advice would be: if you are looking for a GOOD Hungarian cookbook, look for a Hungarian author...

5-0 out of 5 stars The best cookbook out there
I do not like cooking but I like food. Though I am not Hungarian, this cookbook offers recipes for the dishes I grew up with in the Balkans. I am proud of myself now :) I can actually make a delicious meal. June Meyer you're a blessing!!!!!!! My kids are getting good food now. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Traditional Foods, with few Modernisations....
It seems best to let Karoly Gundel speak for himself in his introduction to Hungarian food.

"As we know, one of the most important factors in cooking is the freshness of the ingredients. This idea of freshness is a relative one, for it is impossible to tell the difference between the fresh and the freshest, unless we have eaten newly picked wild strawberries in a sunny glade, tasted the flavor of ripe, sun-kissed, luscious apricots straight from the tree, enjoyed radishes freshly pulled from the soil." -p11

"I confess that the special impression produced on foreigners by the Hungarian cuisine is largely due to the freshness of the ingredients making up the dishes.Another important factor contributing to the excellence of Hungarian cooking is the partiality of Hungarians for the good things of the table and -what goes with it--a natural gift for cooking."

"Then again, mere chance alone does not account for the fact that culinary art always rises to the heights of perfection in places where the soil produces an abundant variety of raw materials for the kitchen." -p13

I have found a lot of very interesting and unique recipes in this thin book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Buyer beware!
This "authentic Hungarian cookbook" deserves 0 stars, but Amazon didn't give me that option. Besides the English misspellings like "tomatoe" and "rue," many Hungarian words are misspelled as well, leading me to believe that the author cannot speak, read, or write Hungarian, much less cook Hungarian! The majority of dishes presented in this book are as foreign to Hungarians as sushi! Jello? Clams? Come on. If you want accurate information on Hungarian cuisine, Aniko Gergely's Culinaria Hungary and George Lang's The Cuisine of Hungary are your best sources. Jo etvagyat kivanok! That's Hungarian for "bon appetit!"

1-0 out of 5 stars An embarrassment to Hungarians
One cannot call these 42 pages of misprint a cookbook. To call it an "Authentic Hungarian Cookbook" is a joke and an embarrassment to Hungarians. How it got published is unbelievable - a plethora of misspelled words, both in Hungarian and English, made-up words (goulosh, rue, gol - to name a few), recipes with no instructions for cooking, and punctuation errors. Can you classify macaroni and cheese, seafood "chapino", clam linguini, pizza, and cream pies as Hungarian? Were the authors joking to include a recipe for preparing Jello? The editorial review is also laughable - "...carefully explains the time-honored cooking methods", "...explicit instructions". Nothing could be further from the truth. I have a collection of over 600 cookbooks and this is by far the worst in that collection.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hungarian? Cookbook?
If you want to read funny (and you read and understand Hungarian), then this book is for you.The recipes are sort of OK, but too simlified. The Hungarian titles are less then good impressions, so why bother? This little booklet covers about 0.1% of the Hungarian cooking. My advice to the authors: go to Hungary first and then try it again. Tamas Sarossy (Autentic Hungarian)

5-0 out of 5 stars Hungarian & English Recipe Titles
One of the things that makes this cookbook so great is that the index of recipe titles is in both Hungarian and English. If you only remember the recipe in Hungarian, no problem! The index directs you to the fully English written recipe with both ounces/pounds and kilograms. This is one of the first cookbooks I use for sure-fire rave reviews! Just like mom makes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just like Grandma used to make
Both sides of my family are Hungarian and I grew up
having most of the these dishes as a child.

The only way I ever knew the recipes was by calling
my Mom or my Grandma, a province away, to ask what I
needed to complete a dish I relished as a child.

What a pleasant surprise to find a cookbook that had
everything I ever remembered. Some of the recipes
are identical to ones I have scratched down on pieces
of scrap paper

Thank you to the author for such an easy book to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eva's Kitchen: A Bit of Hungarian Heaven
Hungarian Cookery has a special place in my heart, as I am of Hungarian ancestry. While there on the market a number of legacy recipe collections that are quite good, Eva's fills a different need.

Born in Hungary, she now lives in Canada. She and her husband John travel back regularly and her recipes are more correctly a blend of both traditional methods and current Hungarian cooking. I have tried a number of her recipes and they always work. I recommend her Langos, Roast Pork stuffed with Sausage (sometimes referred to as "in the manner of Debrecen"), and her Mock Venison. This is a worthwhile addition to any collection of Hungarian cookbooks. It is also an excellent value. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous for beginners and novices
This is a wonderful 95-page illustrated cookbook with about 110 traditional Hungarian recipes, the perfect gift for a budding chef. The recipes include all the ingredients and instructions, and a bit of the folk lore surrounding each of the dishes as well.

I'm not much of a cook, but even I can deal with these recipes.

We're thrilled with this cookbook and hope it is back in print in the U.S. very soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Old World Goodness in Easy-to-Use Hungarian Cookbook
Ilona Horvath's "The Traditional Hungarian Kitchen: 133 Traditional Recipes" is intended for people who cook. No mere coffee-table book, it is like a short version of the Betty Crocker Cookbook.

Why?

Included within the 133 recipes are the basics. Langos, palancsinta, csirke paprikash, and, of course, goulash. It is filled with straight forward recipes, most with four-color pictures, with serving and presentation suggestions.

Some Hungarian cookbooks can be accused of catering to western tastes over traditional tastes. Not this one. This was published just before the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, and retains the old world goodness that will greet your table.

Those familiar with the Hungarian names will find helpful an index in Hungarian, as well as one in English. The book, originally published in Hungarian in 1955, reads smoothly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
This is a wonderful and concise book. It includes a small history/description of Hungarian cooking at the beginning, which is incredibly well stated. It has basically all of the traditional recipes, ranging from soups and salads, through to desserts. Most are accompanied by excellent pictures as well. I highly, highly recommend this book for anyone interested in Hungarian cooking, and especially for people (like me) who would like a compendium of recipes from their heritage. This is absolutely the best Hungarian cookbook I have seen. Enjoy! ... Read more
