Extractions: The small village of Lake Placid is world-famous as the host of the Winter Olympic Games in 1932 and 1980, but its place in the sporting world goes beyond that. Lake Placid attracts world-class athletes for the current world championship events. As well, Olympic athletes currently use Lake Placid as a training facility for many Olympic sports. In 1932, the world focused on a small village in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. The world was in the midst of the Great Depression and Franklin D. Roosevelt was Governor of the State of New York. Lake Placid, with a population of 2,930, was host of the III Olympic Winter Games. In 1929, Godfrey Dewey, winter sports enthusiast and son of Dr. Melvil Dewey, founder of the Dewey Decimal System, successfully presented the village's bid for the 1932 Games to the International Olympic Committee.

In 1893 Lord Stanley gave the Stanley Cup for amateur competition. In 1910 the Stanley Cup became the award for the winners of the professional league play-offs. History of Ice Hockey in New Zealand The sport has been played in New Zealand for over 60 years and started in the South Island high country where farmers and farm workers played on frozen ponds and lakes. The first organised ice hockey tournament was played at Opawa, near Albury in South Canterbury in 1937 when Wyndham Barker gave a trophy called the Erewhon Cup. A meeting was held afterwards and the New Zealand Ice Skating Association formed. Ice hockey was always the poor relation in the NZISA and it wasn't until 1986 when the New Zealand Ice Hockey Federation was formed at a meeting at Lake Tekapo that ice hockey began to flourish. New Zealand's international debut was at the IIHF D Pool World Championships in Perth, West Australia in 1987 where the team won the Bronze medal. New Zealand Senior teams have competed at World Championships regularly since 1995, but success has been elusive and the standard of competition very high. Junior teams began competing in the IIHF Asian/ Oceania Junior Championships in 1998. In 1999 a Bronze medal was achieved in Division 2 of these Championships, and in 2000 the New Zealand Juniors won the Gold Medal in Thailand.

Extractions: U.S. players rejoice after their 4-3 victory over the Soviets. It was 20 years ago Tuesday when the U.S. Olympic hockey team made us believe in miracles. The young Americans' upset of the mighty Soviets in the 1980 Winter Olympics remains one of the great moments in sports history. ESPN.com's Ray Ratto says it wasn't just the game that it made it the Miracle on Ice; it was the timing and context of it. The Cold War was at one of its peaks, and the Russians seemed invincible , especially on the ice. All that changed Feb. 22, 1980.
Extractions: Goalie Martin Brodeur (front center) poses with the rest of Team Canada after receiving their gold medals. AP WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (AP) The Maple Leaf dollar buried in America's home ice turned out to be a golden omen for Canada. The Canadians finally ended an agonizing 50-year wait for the Olympic gold medal in their national sport, beating the United States as Jarome Iginla and Joe Sakic each scored twice in a historic 5-2 victory Sunday. "We're a hockey power in the world," goaltender Martin Brodeur said. "Winning the gold kind of reassures Canada." The loss ended U.S. coach Herb Brooks' quest to lead a second gold-medal winning team 22 years after the famous "Miracle on Ice" with a group of college players. "Our attitude coming into this game was we're the better team, we've got to go out there and prove it," U.S. captain Chris Chelios said. "But today, Canada was better." Maybe it was because the Americans really didn't have the home-ice advantage.

Extractions: Tommy Salo gave up a soft goal for the game-winner with 2:24 to play. AP WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (AP) The shot couldn't possibly go in, but it did. Sweden couldn't possibly lose, but it did. And the kind of upset that couldn't possibly happen with NHL players now dominating the Olympics is a reality. Vladimir Kopat scored on a 70-foot shot that bounced wildly off goalie Tommy Salo's head with only 2:24 remaining and Belarus scored one of the greatest upsets in Olympic history Wednesday, beating Sweden 4-3 in the hockey quarterfinals. Yes, Belarus believes in miracles, too. "For sure, it is a miracle for us," Belarus goalie Andrei Mezin said. "But sometimes a gun without bullets can shoot, and that was us. We've made our place in history." Belarus-Sweden Breakdown How better to describe Belarus' stunning 4-3 upset of Sweden than Exhibit A as to why you play the game? In competition, anything can happen. Especially in single-elimination events. And that is what this game turned into an event. And one in which Belarus found a way to slow up the high-flying Swedes between the blue lines.
