Iceland has a total area of 103.000 sq km, or 39.756 sq. miles. From north to south the greatest distance is about 300 km or 185 miles, from west to east about 500 km or 305 miles. The coastline is 6000 km or 3700 miles and the shortest distance to other countries are 286 km or 180 miles to Greenland, 795 km or 495 miles to Scotland and 950 km or 590 miles to Norway. Iceland straddles a submarine ridge connecting Scotland with Greenland and has one of the Earth's major geological faults - the mid-Atlantic rift - running through it. Iceland is one of the most active volcanic countries in the world, and nearly all types of volcanoes formed on earth can be found in Iceland. Geologically Iceland is a very young country still in the progress of its formation. The appearance of the island of Surtsey , created by submarine eruption of the south coast 1963, is one example. Ten years later, in 1973, the island of Heimaey in the Westman Islands had a volcanic eruption. The entire population of some 5,200 were moved to the mainland in a matter of hours, luckily without any accidents occuring.

These subjects can also be studied as 30-credit minor subjects with various others. Tourism studies are likewise offered to an independent 45-credit diploma. Studying for a Masters or doctoral degree is also possible at the department. The lecturing staff now includes five geologists and four geographers, three adjuncts, plus several part-time lecturers. In recent years, 5-15 students have enrolled in geology each year, and 15-25 in geography, and 60-80 in tourism studies. Geology, geography and tourism studies are demanding subjects, which are highly relevant for understanding today's world. Knowledge of natural processes is needed as never before. We humans also greatly need to find ways of improving our record in environmental matters. Globalisation of economy and culture is also rapidly changing the position of regions and places within an interconnected world, which calls for academic understanding. The growth of tourism is one of the most important processes affecting places and regions, and deserves careful study. Geology is concerned with the Earth itself, its formation and constant remaking. Geologists seek an understanding of the nature and speed of the processes involved. They look at connections between past and present processes and try to find out what the future might entail, for example in the case of global climatic changes. Also, geological knowledge is necessary for exploring and managing the use of the Earth's resources (metals, building materials, fuels, geothermal resources, water) as well as in the preparation for construction. Lately geologists have also contributed to efforts at protecting the Earth against human-induced damages, and to present its wonders to nature observers and tourists. In Iceland, geologists are involved in research at various institutions as well as in various practical tasks for local governments and private companies.
