Icon is an imperative, procedural language with a syntax that is reminiscent of C and Pascal, but with semantics at a much higher level. Extractions: Date finished: 2002-08-12 A reasonably good introduction to Icon from the language's designers. Icon is noteworthy because it takes the idea of generators and uses it as a primary concept; every expression is a generator capable of producing multiple values or reporting failure, and the language will backtrack when an expression fails. I wonder what Icon's authors originally intended the language to be used for, as this book doesn't make that clear at all. Icon is obviously well-suited for writing parsers and similar string-chopping programs, and the backtracking evaluation would make it straightforward to write goal-searching programs, but there's no mention of OS interfaces other than opening files. The language itself is rather compact, using single-character operators a lot, so ?L returns a random object from the list L, and *L is the length of the list. The language seems moribund these days, and it's probably not much of a loss, because except for generators it's a fairly unremarkable scripting language, but it would be nice to see a modern language with the same backtracking capability.

Icon is a wonderfully versatile language and is suited for a wide range of tasks . I've used Icon to produce small, one-shot programs suitable for solving very specific tasks. Icon has also been my language of choice for much larger, more complex, and reusable programs. I find Icon very useful for manipulating a raw data set into a more usable form. For example, the sqlize program rewrites the standard input in a form which is easily incorporated into a SQL select query using "in." Similarly the trim program strips extra whitespace from the end of a line of text. Several people have found Icon to be preferable to Perl for system administration and have written extensively on this topic For part of my mathematics research in 1996, I found Icon to be the ideal tool for modeling an algorithm in combinatorial group theory. The implementation was quite large but was much shorter and comprehensible than a similar program in C or Prolog would have been. Griswold Icon is a very high-level, general-purpose programming language with a strong emphasis on processing strings of characters and complicated structures. It was developed at the University of Arizona under the support of the National Science Foundation as a byproduct of research on high-level facilities for nonnumeric computation. That description is accurate, but it doesn't really tell you what the language is like or why so many programmers love it. I'll explain these things and give some examples that convey the nature of the language. An important issue in designing Icon was making programming easy, quick, and, we hoped, fun. The success of this design philosophy is illustrated by the fact that Icon programs are typ ically one-tenth to one-third the size of equivalent C programs and can be written correspondingly faster. Programming tasks that require extensive manipulations of strings and structures are surprisingly common. Compilers, word processors, and databases are examples. Icon has been used for many things, including text formatting, natural-language processing, program generation, rapid prototyping, and AI. Because it's easy to program in Icon, programmers often use it for one-shot, throwaway applications. But this language is also popular for the most complex applications, including those of a speculative nature, where quick results and ease of modification are vital.
