The idea here is to influence the treatment of evolution in biology textbooks, insuring that the subject is mentioned only briefly or not at all. Dorothy Nelkin describes how this tactic works: The creationist effort to influence the state textbook committees usually focuses on a handful of large states, where they can the get maximum effect for a minimum expenditure of money and manpower. The state of California alone, for instance, accounts for over ten percent of all money spent on textbooks in the United States. Another large state, Texas, has traditionally been sympathetic to the creationists (in 1994, the Republican Party in Texas adopted a platform plank advocating teaching creationism in the schools), and also accounts for a large portion of the textbook market. In both of these states, creationists attempt to win a majority on the textbook selection committees so they can influence the content of biology textbooks. By pressuring these large markets towards expunging or limiting mention of evolution in textbooks, the creationists hope to influence the textbooks which are made available to other states as well. And such efforts seem to have been at least partially successful. In the late 1970's, when creationists were attempting to pressure the California state education committee to mandate "equal treatment" for creation science, The most widely- used biology textbook in the state (also used throughout the country)

Extractions: Excerpted from the Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Boards current Official Directory This information was compiled from the current FCLB Official Directory and based on information about CE requirements as provided to the FCLB by each individual states licensing board. Contact the state licensing boards for details. The Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Boards does not interpret state law, nor is it responsible for errors or omissions in information provided by the member boards. The FCLB has not taken an official position on whether CE should be required nor the minimum number of recommended hours. In a recent survey, FCLB found doctors of chiropractic are required to have a certain number of hours of continuing education in order to qualify for licensure renewal in most US jurisdictions. Currently, New Jersey does not have continuing education requirements and New York requires only a one-time two hour course in reporting child abuse. All 49 other US jurisdictions require CE (including District of Columbia). The average number of hours across the reporting jurisdictions which require CE is 17.5 hours per year, with a low of 10 hours and high of 50 hours per year (the two states which require 50 hours are Kansas and Illinois, where the boards regulate both DC's and MD's). By far the most common CE requirement is 12 hours per year, with 23 chiropractic boards requiring this number.

Extractions: THE FUTURES PROCESS In April 1998, Idahoans gathered in a series of six Regional Futures Conferences to identify what they thought was probable during the next 10 years, what was possible for libraries to do and be, and finally what a preferred future for Idaho libraries might be. In May, 60 people from the regional conferences convened to refine and focus descriptions of the probable, possible, and preferred futures for Idaho libraries. The following describes the outcome of that work. DRIVING FORCES Seven driving forces that will help shape the future of Idaho libraries over the next ten years are: Technology. There will be continual and increasingly rapid changes in technology. Patron expectations will increase as a result: they will want more services, more sophisticated services, and immediate response time. Staff will be learning continuously to apply new and appropriate technologies in their work and to guide patrons through increasing volumes of information. Library collections will become more diverse in format and services will be accessible in a variety of ways and places. Facilities will be designed to be flexible in order to accommodate changing technologies. Library budgets will support ongoing changes in technology and training to keep staff current.

Extractions: Higher Education Governance Structures Executive Summary Foreword In July 2001 and again in September 2001, the Board met with an Association of Governing Boards facilitator, Dr. Terrence MacTaggart, to discuss Board functioning and its strategic planning agenda for the coming year. One of the consistent themes of these discussions centered around balancing continuity in the governance arrangements for public higher education that Oregon has evolved over many decades, with the appropriate decentralization of responsibility to universities that enables adaptation to a dynamic future. It should be noted that these general concerns have been seriously deliberated by the Boards committees in recent years and a number of changes, both incremental and substantial, have been made. Dr. MacTaggart suggested that it would be useful for the Board to review alternative system models to establish a common framework from which discussion might proceed. To that end, in the report that follows, staff has synthesized existing literature on the rich variety of American public higher education governance structures, including newer models (i.e., the public corporation), and described other recent developments. Although it is a truism, it must be said that while familiar patterns of governance repeat themselves across the 50 states, each states history, culture, and politics have imprinted a highly individualized design on the governance models that have evolved.

An analysis of statewide achievement test results conducted by The Idaho Statesman shows that students in about half of Idaho's rural school districts fall below the state average in writing and math in fourth and eighth grades, compared with a quarter of the students in urban districts.
