Extractions: Hits The Superhighway With their pockets full of rocks and a car full of animal pelts, flowers, old photographs and maps, 28 teachers from throughout Idaho converged for the Annual Alliance of Idaho Geographers Conference. Their mission: To design an international, online resource documenting the diverse geographic regions in Idaho. Each year the Alliance of Idaho Geographers (AIG) holds a special training session for its regional directors and senior geography trainers. The Summer Institute focused this year on how to improve geographic education in Idaho against a backdrop of computer technology. Twenty-eight AIG members spent seven days in June in a computer lab at Boise's East Junior High exploring hypermedia and designing a new Internet resource for Idaho teachers. Led by Boise State University Educational Technology Outreach Program (BSUTOP) staff who took time off from work to help organize the conference, the teachers completed a rigorous training schedule of 12 hour days. They learned how to search the Internet, send/receive email, digitize video, record sound bytes, scan and manipulate images, and storyboard hypermedia presentations. The Alliance, under the direction of Dr. Katherine Young, consists of seven regions with a regional director overseeing activities in each region. Together with senior members of each region, the regional directors outlined an ambitious plan to illustrate Idaho geography through the development of seven inter-connected web sites.

To the north is British Columbia, a province of Canada. Idaho's location makes it a Pacific Northwest state. Geography The thirteenth largest state (in size) is Idaho. The southern part of the state is a rectangle 316 miles, east to west, and 175 miles, north to south. The upper part is a narrowing panhandle 45 miles wide at the north end near British Columbia. Idaho's western border is divided between Washington and Oregon, which stretches 483 miles north to south. South of Idaho is Nevada and Utah. Finally, east of Idaho are the states of Wyoming and Montana. Idaho has three major land regions: the Rocky Mountains Region, the Columbia Plateau, and the Basin and Range Region, the largest being the Rocky Mountains Region. This region covers the panhandle and forms a bow down three-quarters of the state, and on the East, forming a strip along the Wyoming border. The region includes some of the most rugged areas in the United States. Parts of it can be explored only on foot or horseback. There are many plateaus, valleys, mountains, canyons, and gorges in the region. In these valleys, there are wheat and pea farms, with some hog and beef ranches.

Extractions: Boise County was created on January 12, 1863, by combining all of Washington Territory south and east of the Payette River and the Bitterroots. The county included most of what later was southern Idaho and a fourth of Wyoming. Idaho Geography was not well understood by Washington Territorial lawmakers in Olympia in those days. All the important Coeur d'Alene mines were shut down on January 16, 1892, because of adverse freight rates and the low price of silver. Cackling hens, crowing roosters, barking dogs and mewing cats inaugurated the 2 nd annual opening of the Idaho State Poultry and Pet Association meeting on January 13, 1902 in the YMCA building on the corner of 10 th and Main in Boise. Judge Weldon B. Heyburn was elected to the U.S. Senate on January 14, 1903. Judge Heyburn received the vote of every Republican in both houses. The Democrats voted solidly for James H. Hawley. The total - Heyburn, 50; Hawley, 11. On January 15, 1905, the Idaho Supreme Court ruled that cities cannot discriminate against women who patronize saloons provided they behave themselves. Cities were given power to prevent women from entering saloons for immoral purposes, but could not subject them to a fine if they visited bar rooms for a legitimate reason.
