NOTE: We have noticed numerous inaccuracies and mistakes in the accounts and events listed in this encyclopedia and leave the detection and judgement of these mistakes up to our readers. Also, since the text from the encyclopedia only covers the events up to the mid 1930's, we (Persian Outpost) have included a brief addendum to cover the events from the WWII until the 1979 revolution. We appreciate and welcome any correction and addition to our addendum. Under Ardshir-i-Darazdast (465-425) and his successors decadence set in, and the first organized Persian empire of the Achamenides, founded by Cyrus the Great, in 559 B.C., fell before the Greek Alexander (334 B.C.) Greek domination yielded only to that of Parthia, begun by Ashk (c. 246 B.C.). In the reign of Ardavan, one Ardashir-i-Babakan of Kaianian descent led a successful revolt, and founded the Sassanian dynasty (228-641 A.D), under whose kings Persia regained her ancient glory.

    Extractions: History of Iran Iranians are descendants of Indo-Europeans who came from the Indian subcontinent about 2000 BC, although archaeological evidence indicates human habitation as early as 18,000 years ago. In 549 BC, Cyrus the Great began to make Persia (as Iran was then known) into a great empire that encompassed parts of Eastern Europe, Egypt and India. In succeeding centuries, Persia first fell to Alexander the Great (333 BC) and later to Arabs, Turks and Mongols. In 1501, the country regained its political independence. The most lasting influence was from Arabs, who introduced Islam. (Today's Iranians embrace the Shiite branch of the religion, rather than the Sunni followed by most of the Arabs.) In reaction to the oppressive regime of the shah and his Western supporters, Ayatollah Khomeini helped lead the revolution that brought to power a fundamentalist Islamic government in 1979. The world quickly got a taste of its diplomacy: A few months later, 52 staff members at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran were taken hostage for a tense 444 days, and relations between Iran and the U.S. remained precarious for nearly two decades.

During the first 1000 years of Iranian history, several kingdoms rose and fell. In the 6th century B.C., King Cyrus the Great, of the Persian Achaemenid dynasty, defeated the rival Medes in northern Iran and united the Iranian people. Under Cyrus' rule Persian armies conquered all of the present Middle East and Central Asia as far as what is now Pakistan. Persepolis was built and a capital, Pâsârgâd was founded in the region of Fârs. Cyrus the Great died in 529 B.C. and he was buried at Pâsârgâd, not far from Persepolis. Persepolis The next emperor was Darius, who developed the heritage of Cyrus. His dream of capturing Athens failed and also his son Xerxes attempted to conquer Athens but was defeated. The great empire founded by Cyrus flourished for over 2 centuries until it was overthrown in the 4th century B.C. by Alexander the Great, who burned down Persepolis. Alexander and his successors established a new dynasty and extended Greek cultural influence throughout the area. Zoroaster (Zarathushtra) Greek rule lasted until the 2nd century B.C., when the Parthians (people who were related to the Iranians) gained control. The Parthians considered themselves heirs of the Achaemenids and adopted Zoroastrianism as the official religion. After 350 years of rule, the Parthians were defeated by the Sasanids who established another Persian dynasty and ruled for 4 centuries until the Arab conquest of Persia.

Though Alexander the Great conquered Persia about two hundred years later, Persia did regain its independence after Alexander's death. The Persian Sassanian empire established in 226 A.D. was a formidable rival to the Roman Empire. It remained until Islam swept into the region in 641, displacing Zoroastrianism which had been the principal religion. The Mongols arrived in the early 1200s and their rule persisted until 1502. The Safavid dynasty ruled until 1736 but its end ushered in two hundred years of decline for Persia. Britain and Russia began to assert control over Persia in the 19th century. The defacto situation was formalized in a 1907 agreement between the two powers that divided Persia into specified spheres of influence. After the First World War, Persia was independent but in reality, the country was still treated as a protectorate of Britain. By 1921, the Soviet Union had given up all claims to Persian territory. That year, a military dictatorship was established by Reza Khan who then declared himself, Reza Shah Pahlavi, the first of what was to be a hereditary monarchy in 1925. The country became Iran in 1935. During the Second World War, the British (with an eye on Iran's oil) occupied the country and forced Reza Shah to abdicate. His son, Mohammed Reza Shah Pahlavi, took his place. In the early 1950s, the Shah was briefly ousted but returned in 1953, with the support of the US and British. The Shah was pro-Western, pro-progress and anti-communist. He was also repressive to his people and used the secret police to keep dissent buried. The Shah was exiled in 1979 after widespread violence erupted provoked by the religious fundamentalist elements in the country. The new government, led by austere Ayatollah Khomeini, was Islamic and totalitarian: thousands were executed as the new regime established itself. Militants took over the US embassy in 1979, holding over sixty Americans hostage for over a year. In 1980, war broke out between Iraq and Iran. It raged for most of the decade and cost the lives of at least a half-million people and probably closer to a million. In 1989, Khomeini died. Though Iran was no friend of the West, it tacitly supported the Gulf War against Iraq (its old enemy) by observing UN sanctions against Iraq and by grounding Iraqi planes that landed in Iran seeking haven from Allied bombing raids. Though a relatively 'moderate' government came into power in 1997, Iran remains deep in the grip of Muslim fundamentalism, showing few signs of moving towards democracy any time soon.
