Extractions: The Department of Classics at Florida State University will sponsor two archaeological excavations in Italy during the summer of 2003, at Cetamura del Chianti, and at San Venanzo, near Orvieto. Students may select one of the excavations for application depending on desires in regard to length of time of the excavation, field school fee, number of field trips and amount of academic credit available. Students may apply to both excavations, but they may be chosen to be a member of the crew on only one of these. (It is not possible to attend both since the dates for Cetamura and San Venanzo are overlapping). One may apply electronically, or by inquiry to Archaeology Programs in Italy, Department of Classics, Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL 32306-1510.

Extractions: Help John Robb This research, ongoing since 1990, focuses upon skeletal signs of health, violence and activity in prehistoric Italian skeletons. To date, about 400 skeletons from about 40 sites have been studied. The earliest site, Ripa Tetta, is a Neolithic village dating to the sixth millennium BC. The latest site, Pontecagnano, is an Iron Age cemetery dating to the 7th-3rd centuries BC. Prehistoric Italian skeletons reflect a number of cultural practices. Many were trepanned; about three fourths of trepanations are found in males. Some, however, are known in females (see Rivista di Antropologia 72, 1994). Trepanned male, Bronze Age, Grotta dello Scoglietto, Toscana; note also benign osteoma Dental remains reveal a practice of intentional tooth removal in Neolithic women, possibly for ritual, cosmetic or ethno-medical reasons (see Antiquity Pre-mortem loss of two incisors, Neolithic female, Fonteviva, Puglia Skeletal remains portray long-term changes in violence. Skeletal trauma appears highest in the Neolithic, uncommon in the Copper Age, and moderate to high in the Bronze and Iron Ages a pattern which contradicts the image of the peaceful Neolithic and the warlike Copper Age derived from art and artifacts, and which complex changes in the social use of violence (see "Violence and Gender in Early Italy", in Troubled Times: Violence and Warfare in the Past

Extractions: della Cala Prehistoric sites on the coast between Scario and Camerota Palaeolithic: artefacts in the area of Camerota Cala Bianca: biface from the archate series Prehistoric sites of the Camerota coast are an important testimony both for the density of built-up area and for the wide chronological arc they cover. In fact you can fix a temporal succession that, except for a few interruptions, starts from 500,000 years ago up to the thresholds of history. Above all, numerous are the finds of the Palaeolithic period when man, still in the cultural phases of hunting and harvesting, met a favourable habitat in the Cilento because of its climate, an environment that was rich in game and natural shelters, such as refuges and caves. The most ancient traces of human presence are near Marina di Camerota, in the bay of Cala Bianca, where stoned tools whose estimated age is about half a million years. The finds of Cala d'Arconte and Capo Grosso are more recent, but always related to the lower Palaeolithic, and include splendid bifacial siliceous stone tools. There was a wider diffusion of establishments during the middle Palaeolithic, in an interval of time ranging from 100,000 and 25,000 years ago, when the pressing of a glacial period induced man to seek shelter in caves. Therefore, many natural caves of the Camerota coast hold remains of human activities of the Mousterian period. These are tools made with splinters of stone, bones of hunted animals and layers of residual ash and charcoals of ancient hearths as well.

Our project centers on Insula 1 of Regio VI, which is located just inside of the Herculaneum gateway and contains the House of the Surgeon, generally considered to be one of the oldest houses in the city.
