Product Description
Angela Ruggiero is the world’s best women's ice hockey player as rated by Hockey News magazine. She was the first female non-goalie to play in a men’s professional hockey league, and she has used her status as a top female athlete to promote education, health, and the value of sports across the globe. A Harvard graduate, humanitarian, and rare hockey “triple crown” winner (Olympic gold medalist, world champion, and collegiate champion), she traces in Breaking the Ice the growth of girls’ and women’s hockey from the fringes of the sports world to the center of the Olympic and world stage.Angela’s inspirational journey from a childhood in the suburbs of Southern California, where she had to overcome skepticism concerning girls in hockey and even about the sport of hockey itself, to stardom in rinks around the world is a remarkable story of determination and athletic achievement. A leading player for all three U.S. Women’s Olympic Hockey teams for which she has played, she recounts not only the joys of ultimate victory but also the physical and emotional challenges that confront a topnotch athlete, including strains on family life, a punishing training regimen, and the rigors of constant travel. It reveals Angela as a dynamic and outspoken woman who has packed a rucksack full of intense experiences and hard-learned lessons into her life. Her story will appeal not only to hockey and sports fans but also to readers of all ages who are interested in the triumph of a woman who would not be daunted by the challenges of blazing a trail and breaking through barriers. Angela has played in six International Ice Hockey Federation Women’s World Championships, and in April 2005 she scored one of the shootout goals that helped the U.S. team win the tournament for the first time. She was recognized by the NCAA as one of the Top VIII scholar athletes in the country. Since graduating from Harvard in 2004, Ruggiero has founded the All-American Girls Hockey School. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars hockey role model
I read this book after my 13 year hockey player finished. This is a life lesson book. She is one of the top in her field and like C.Gunn had things to overcome that made them stronger. This book lets girls know these are real people that worked hard, and it is possible to shoot for the stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for ALL female athletes
My daughter is a 10 year old girl hockey player and both she and I read the book, she actually did a powerpoint presentation for school on the book. This book is more than just a hockey book but an insiration to all girls about the obstacles Angela overcame in her life. After reading the book myself I am glad to know that my daughter looks up to Angela and wants to be like her, there is NO better role model for a young girl to look up to than Angela. This book is a must for all young girls, no matter what sport or activity they are involved in.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring.
This book talks about some of the early formings of girls/womens hockey in the USA. This is a very good book to read if you are familiar with hockey. Even if you are not involved with hockey you will like this book, because it talks about overcoming the odds and moving up in the ranks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Angela Ruggiero rocks my (hockey) socks
This book is less about hockey and more about getting a peek inside the life of one of the greatest athletes of all time.It details the dedication that excellence requires, combined with personal stories from Angela's life. This book should be a part of every female hockey player's library. As a bonus, Ruggiero is seriously hot. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book to Learn From
This book is truly a very good book for learning how to play the wonderful game of hockey both at the beginner level and advanced level. At the beginner level it shows and tell you how to skate, stop turn, foward and backward crossovers. It also has rules of the game which are especially helpful for the beginner level. It has drills that one should perform to get better. For the intermediate through advanced level it has even more drillsand techniques that even the beginners should get to know.It shows how to shoot the puck defensive, offensive and even goalie tactics. It has a conditioning with nutrition chapter, pregame stretches and even the mental game. And finally at the end it even tells you how to build a rink and how to organize and coach a team.Even if you think you know everything about hockey I can almost guarantee you there is something in this 220 page hockey-training masterpiece.I've been playing for only two years and I have learned a ton from this book and you will most definitely too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive guide for new players
I've bought about 7 or 8 books on various aspects of hockey over the pastfew weeks, and each has taught me something, but I really needed one thatcould tell me *how the game is played* -- where I'm supposed to be and whatI'm supposed to be doing in different situations. This book did just thatby explaining the basics of offense and defense with both text andeasy-to-follow diagrams. I have a good overall sense of the game now, aswell as specific admonishments to keep in mind (like not to chase a puckcarrier behind the goal, and not to follow crisscrossing forwards whenbackchecking). I plan to read this book again in a month (after I've playeda few games on an organized team), and I fully expect to absorb even more.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners learning the basics of ice hockey.
My team, the San Francisco Earthquakes, has several beginner players. Most of them had been to beginner hockey classes, but they still didn't know many of the basics. I set out to find a book that would provide these basiclessons and answer many of the new players' questions. I looked at severalbooks, but this one had the best fit. It is written for beginners, but willalso serve experienced players who need to review the basics. What to do,where to be, how to shoot, when to pass? These questions and many more areall answered clearly and simply. This is a book for beginners. Intermediateand advanced players may be looking for more insight than this bookprovides. My teammates now know what to do most of the time. If they'd onlyskate a little harder... ... Read more

Book Description
Maine’s long winters would seem the ideal place for hockey to develop, but blistering winter conditions, frigid temperatures, and windchill made the sport unpleasant and even dangerous. The problem was not solved until 1976, when Harold Alfond donated a large sum of money for the establishment of a suitable facility for indoor hockey. University of Maine Ice Hockey tells the story of how a small school from Maine with a student body of under 12,000 rose to be one of the top-tier hockey programs in the nation, one of the great success stories in modern collegiate sports. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Book We Can All Relate To
Brian Kennedy's Growing Up Hockey will take you back to the playground, reminding you of the politics of childhood. For Brian, this meant having the right hockey stick and having the rare hockey cards. But do not be fooled. This book is not just for hockey fans.Anyone can relate. As kids, we all wanted to be able to brag to our friends about our possessions or our accomplishments. And those things we loved as children we often take with us as adults. This is what this book is all about.

And the writing style?Brian writes in a way that makes it hard to put the book down.He does not waste words, but he gives all the detail needed.I read the book in three days, even after having to steal it back from my wife.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Christmas Story, Hockey Style
"Growing Up Hockey" is about a little boy, this one a real-life hockey player named Brian Kennedy. If you enjoyed "A Christmas Story" and love hockey, you'll be glad to know that reading Kennedy's account of his love affair with hockey is like listening to Ralphie Parker talk about his obsession for a Red Ryder BB gun. The major difference is that Kennedy schemes for not a rifle to fend off Black Bart but rather a hockey stick with a banana curve and then a Ken Dryden hockey card so that he can boast to his playground pals. You read this story, and you'll boast to your hockey friends that you've read the funniest hockey book you've read in years.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST Own for Hockey Fans
Brian Kennedy's story of the average hockey lover/player growing up in Canada is one I think everyone who loves hockey will enjoy. Growing Up Hockey chronicles Mr. Kennedy's life as he grew up in Canada and later went to the US and England for school or work. Although I grew up in the US, where hockey was not the main sport, I enjoyed reading about what life is like for those who grow up with hockey as an integral part of their lives.

It's great that the US has so many options, but I found myself wishing I knew what it was like to be able to discuss hockey with almost anyone around. Since I've been a fan of hockey, I've always had a couple friends who enjoy the game about as much as I do, but it would be something else to experience an environment where those who did not follow hockey were the exception.

Mr. Kennedy's detailed account of his life growing up with hockey as a central influence is very interesting. He tells stories about playing hockey, watching hockey, hockey cards, living without being able to see much hockey, the differences between the NHL and ENL (in England), and life in Canada.I couldn't recommend this book more for anyone in your life who loves hockey!

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it even though I'm not a hockey fan.
My husband bought this book and I was curious about it when I read the title. I started reading and just couldn't stop. This is a book full of memories and moments that stayed in the mind of the narrator, and they take us (as readers) back to our own memories. These stories made me think about friends in the playground, about that one fleeting moment of athletic success and how it feels to be so close to my dreams of glory. Reading story after story reminded me about that past that we very often take for granted and easily forget, but that will always be a series of defining moments that make us who we are. It's also gratifying to read where the narrator ended up, since he reflects also on his own present life. I am not a hockey fan, but I enjoy good stories, especially when they're written in a way that grabs you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just sit back and enjoy the ride
Life is ultimately about love. We all recognize love, although we do not love in the same way. None understands the logic of our individual passions, but we count ourselves fortunate to be near its mystery. LA Car Editor-at-Large and sports journalist Brian Kennedy writes about his lifelong love and passion in Growing Up Hockey (Folklore Publishing, 2007). The book draws you in at the beginning, with Brian's preschool adventure onto ice in Montreal, and ends with his touching the Duck's Stanley Cup in Los Angeles. The section titles of his book say it well: Learning the Game, Living the Game, Loving the Game. This is a story of a boy who grows up in Canada 's suburbs living for his pee wee league and collecting NHL cards. This is a story of a man who still is the consummate fan watching games over and over so that the video wears thin. He played until it got too rough, he refereed, he bought tickets from scalpers. He finally finds opportunity to worm himself nearer the game by becoming a sports writer. Here is another instance where he writes so he can be closer to his favorite sport. You see, Brian has another passion and love. Brian also writes about cars and car racing. Hockey and cars are about the adrenaline of gliding speed. But why analyze. Growing Up Hockey should be approached in much the same way as Brian's automotive articles: Just sit back, hang on and enjoy the ride. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
Not only does this book provide you with detailed drills , it backs it upwith specifics on what areas the drill works on , and highlights. It alsohas well written introductions on individual areasand the skills neededto to become a better offensive player , well worth the time to read anddigest the knowledge it provides .

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book
I haven't read many books about hockey coaching, but after recieving this book, I'm pretty happy with it.It teaches you the basic shooting principles and spends some time on each type of shot. Then it goes into sections about buildings skills for each type of offensive play your team might need to work on: 1-1's, setting up plays, etc.A good variety of drills are offerred in this book and the nice thing is you can photocopy them out one by one because they are restricted to facing pages - so that you don't have to carry the whole book around.I'll be using these drills with my kids roller-hockey team and I think it will help.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best resources I've come across
Santa dropped this one in my stocking. It's great, particularly if you are searching for half-ice drills -- about half of the 75 drills are designed for half-ice.The strength of this book is its emphasis on puck movement to create scoring chances. The corollary is also true -- by emphasizing movement on the attack, goaltenders also improve their positioning and mobility. The drills are well-suited to kids aged 9 and up. I have shared the book with other coaches and, perhaps the strongest endorsement --my house league hockey association has ordered copies for all of our coaches! ... Read more
