2-0 out of 5 stars Not much substance
This book was very disappointing.Much of its 32 pages is made up of illustrations that are just "filler."For example, page 15 is a full page drawing of players apparently changing lines.Another full page is taken up by a drawing of a defenseman watching two offensive players approach. In my experience, the two most important rules for young players to master are the offsides rule and icing. This book devotes one sentence to offsides and two sentences to icing. It does, however, devote a whole page to "the puck" and another whole page to "the stick."Some information in the book is debatable or even wrong. For example, on page 18 the young player is advised that "icing is only called icing when both teams have an equal number of players on the ice."My son, who has 7 years of youth hockey experience, said that this book might be "OK for a little kid who knows absolutely nothing," but that a "kid that young probably would not be able to read the book."My daughter, who has 4 years of youth hockey experience, said, "Not so great."

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to teach Children the rules and sport of Hockey
This book is excellent.I have used it while coaching hockey and my son and I have spent many hours reading it over and over again. It is basic, and simple for young children to understand. The presentation of the bookis great, it has color illustrations for each of the rules. Its simplicitymakes it great for children, or even adults to learn from ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Short Course to Winning Hockey Strategies
This book covers most aspects of strategic play and principles in all zones of the ice and situations likely to be encounteredby coaches involved in the Novice to Peewee categories of ice hockey.Theexplanations and diagrams are easy to follow and would also be useful tothe arm chair enthusiasts who desire to upgrade their understanding andappreciation of the viewing of the game. The basic principles are wellillustrated and the more complex strategies are avoided which serves tokeep things simple and easily digestable. Some of the jargon tends to bespecific to the author's locale but generally is well explained. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hockey's Finest Photographic Record
I own many hockey books, and this book is, by far, the one I open up most often. Each picture takes you into a world of NHL hockey that has long passed away. The beautiful full-color photographs will cause you to forget that they are images of the fastest moving sport in the world. It's as if the players have posed for the camera in an attempt to recreate hidden moments of the game. The facial expressions alone will capture your eye. You'll find yourself scanning every detail of the pictures, looking for that elusive black puck (and you'll find that puck in nearly every picture). This book is a pure treasure for fans of the game of hockey, in particular those fans who remember the simple days of 6 teams, 120 players, 1 Cup.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practically better than watching hockey on TV!
You can literally spend hours looking at this book and not tire of the images. They're so life-like it's eerie.Harold Barkley's strobe photography techniques give the pictures a "3-D" quality that is completely absent in today's "flat" images.Of course, the fact that the stars in the photos are from the "Golden Era" (50's and 60's) make the book all that much better. These stills make you yearn for the hockey of yesteryear, even if you weren't there! The flat sticks, the glossy narrow skates, the bryl-cream donned hair (helmet, what helmet?) - it's all here right down to the ice-shavings littering the goal crease, all in awesome detail.

Frank Selke's introduction is excellent as well. Here is a man that makes no bones about why this was hockey's greatest era.My favorite example - fights were seen as a gentlemanly way to settle differences, not as an indication of a sport gone awry with "violence".My only complaint is that his anecdotes are only a few pages rather than a few chapters.

But the photographs are really what this book is about.Sure, the statistics and history of each player featured are there, but I found my eyes continually wandering from the print back to the image - they're that good. It's tempting to cut them all out and frame them.

This book will be enjoyed by any hockey fan, but if your over 40 it will be a treasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Crystalline color photos from hockey's glory years
Wow! Buy this book just for the fabulous photographs taken by Harold Barkley, a long-time photgrapher with the Toronto Star. Barkley pioneered the use of the strobe in sports photography, and the detail he captured inthese bright color photos is phenomenal--the texture of the ice, themeticulously greased and combed hair on the players, the rows ofdark-suited spectators in the audience. This is how hockey used to look! The text consists of 1-2 page spreads on individual players of the day. Thestars are all here, of course, but more interesting, to me anyway, are theplayers who've slipped from memory--Andy Hebenton, Norm Ullman, CamilleHenry, Elmer Vasko. These names ring bells for fans who grew up in thatera, but you seldom hear them now. Yet, here they are, preserved for usboth in prose and in pristine photographic detail. This book's a gem. ... Book Description
One of the oldest beliefs in racing is that it takes several years of track time before a young driver gains the experience needed to win at the NASCAR Winston Cup Series level. That notion, however, has been shattered over the last 10 years, due in large part to four-time Winston Cup champion Jeff Gordon.

Gordon didn't win a single race during his rookie season, 1993.But in the years that followed many team owners, who had been relying on veteran racers, began to add young, unproven drivers to their teams.Gordon's third full season on tour saw him pick up seven victories to edge the late Dale Earnhardt by a mere 34 points and win first Winston Cup championship.

At that point, fans, the media, and team owners couldn't help but notice the sport's young drivers, who were eagerly awaiting the opportunity to get a Winston Cup ride.Gordon, now 31 years old, opened many doors for the young guns who have become a huge factor in Winston Cup racing.

If skeptics still found it hard to acknowledge the youth trend, they could no longer ignore it when Tony Stewart entered the Winston Cup scene during the 1999 season. He had the greatest rookie year in history with three victories and a third place finish in the final point standings.

During the following season, the 2000 campaign, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Matt Kenseth engaged in one of the greatest Rookie-of-the-Year battles in Winston Cup history. The young Earnhardt scored two victories and Kenseth earned one, but Kenseth edged his close friend and fellow competitor for the top rookie award.

After the last-lap crash at the Daytona 500 that claimed the life of seven-time champion Dale Earnhardt, Kevin Harvick moved up to NASCAR's top rank during 2001 as a driver for veteran team owner Richard Childress. In a painful season for many, Harvick picked up two wins and finished ninth in the final point standings to easily win top rookie honors over Kurt Busch.

The fight for the 2002 Winston Cup Rookie-of-the-Year award is down to first-year drivers Jimmie Johnson and Ryan Newman. While Johnson picked up two victories early in the season and is in position to become the first rookie driver to win a Winston Cup title, Newman has also had a great year. It's a rookie battle that won't likely be decided until the checkered flag is thrown at this year's season finale in Miami.

Race fans and the public now know that these young guns are a major factor in NASCAR Winston Series racing. These up-and-coming stars appear poised to help carry the sport into the future. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars EUROPEAN FAN LIKES IT
You know i really liked this book just because of that its nice to see great european players past and present in this book. unlike other books where it's just nhl players, this book has both nhl players and european players included. As a international hockey historian i really enjoyed it. gretzky-kharlamov-nedomansky-salming and many other great players are in this book. the price is my only problem with the book, it cost some bucks.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a pleasure
The best hockey book I’ve ever seen!!!

A friend of mine showed me this book.. What a pleasure!!!
I was so impressed. Not only by its appearance, but also by the quality and amount of information compiled. Not to mention unique photos. Then I saw a review of it on the Amazon.ca by
Mr. Peter Adler with a title “Do not waste your money”. Why ?! wondered. He said he reviewed it also for ‘The Edmonton Journal’.
(Why should he review it twice ?) So I surfed the archives of this journal and found an awkward style of a review using inadequate words such as : “extremely sloppy”, “rubbish”, “flop”, “fatal flaw” etc. What did he found in the 1020 pages of the book ?-May be a misspelled player name and two wrong dates???… Give me a break. He says : “Authors and editors should be ashamed of themselves”.Is it also because it is "beautifull" too??I say: shame on you Mr. Adler. Your style reflects your character. And I ask - WHAT IS HIS HIDDEN AGENDA ??

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not waste your money
I read this book because I had to: I was reviewing it for The Edmonton Journal. My conclusion is simple and straightforward: while beautiful, this book is so filled with glaring mistakes, howlers and omissions, its authors and editors should be ashamed of themselves. In fact, if it were possible, I would give this volume no stars at all: the first thing a book on history must have is its facts right. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book about hockey with Cam Neely
i read it and it taught me every thing about hocke

4-0 out of 5 stars A good intro to NHL hockey for those new to the sport.
Cam Neely does a good job of explaining the basics of hockey for the beginning fan.He shares his enthusiasm for the game well with the reader, and the book is very easy to follow. The plentiful photos and diagramshelp explain all of the concepts and rules of the game.He discusses thebasic positions and strategies, describes the NHL in detail and gives agood history of the league, and gives guidelines for learning to play.Thewriting style is simple and straightforward, but also a little redundant. I would definitely recommend this book for someone who is just discoveringthe game of hockey and wants to learn more about it.If you're already afan and want to learn more about strategies and other aspects of the game, pass this one by.I've been following hockey for several years and wantedto learn more details about the game, but I was somewhat disappointed bythe lack of depth in this book, as I already knew most of the information. Book Description
Rich, insightful, and highly engaging, Bruce Dowbiggin’s much-praised examination of the craft of hockey was hailed by critics as an enduring addition to the literature of sports.

What makes the best in the hockey business the best? By analyzing forward Steve Yzerman’s superb talent for leadership, defenseman Chris Chelio’s two-way brilliance, goaltender Dominik Hasek’s unrivalled ability to stop the puck, and hockey executive Glen Sather’s gift for construction, shaping, and inspiring a team, Dowbiggin not only illuminates hockey greatness, he also documents the subtle evolution in how the NHL game is played.

1-0 out of 5 stars too many errors
The other reader only pointed out one major error in this book.I have only read ten pages in the Yzerman section and have identified four errors. Detroit is not located on the St.Clair River, New Jersey swept the Wings inthe finals the lockout season, obviously not the year they won 62 games,Yzerman did not lose the Calder Trophy to Steve Larmer, and Yzerman'soldest daughter is named Isabella.Perhaps the author should stick tobroadcasting and let people who know how to research or, at least findpeople who can research, do the writing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Flawed but interesting
A flawed but interesting book. It attempts to be a hockey version of Peter King's "Inside the Helmet," but without King's insight. What will truly annoy fans of the game are the factual errors that any competenteditor would have caught. For example, Dowbiggin writes ofClintMalarchuk's life threatening injury, but has him playing for the WashingtonCapitals. I am being picky sure, but how do you write about a scene no one"will ever forget" and then get the team wrong?! Overall though, the book is a welcome change from the suck up bios and transcribedinterviews passed off as books about hockey. ... Read more

Book Description

Once upon a time, Teena Dickerson endured months of hockey mania every year followed by endless weeks of playoff insanity while her husband sprawled out on the couch guzzling beer and shouting at the TV. Then she decided to change all that and become a devoted fan of this popular game.

The Girlfriend's Guide to Hockey demystifies the arcane language of hockey (such as butt-ending and chippy play), explains the rules and the rituals, and identifies the Stanley behind the championship Cup. It's all here: the teams, the players, the history and the trivia, written with clarity and humor. And there's the complete scoop on women's hockey, too.

With its simple, direct style and sprinkling of colorful anecdotes, this book is the perfect introduction for anyone new to the game and the traditions that accompany it.

This new edition is updated to include recent new stars, Cup winners and "best" teams.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not just for girlfriends
I had two reasons for buying this book. First I'm a Will Ferguson fan; I've read and loved most of his books and his being listed as co-author was good enough for me. Second, despite being Canadian, I am completely ignorant of ice hockey, which comes mostly from a lack of interest. As a Canadian living abroad, I realize that I have ambassadorial duties regarding the promotion of Canadiana, and ice hockey tops the list of Canadiana must-know items. So since girlfriends are seldom interested in sports (he he he) a book written by a woman for women would logically need to drum up interest in the topic, and this it did for me.

Teene Spencer wrote most of it and presents the history of the game, a basic overview of the rules, a survey of the organization, and lists of the greatest players and teams. Husband and boyfriend Bruce Spencer and family friend Will Ferguson pepper the pages with comments and disputes, most prominent of which is the fight-to-the-death over the Montreal Canadiens.

Good read, and informative if you want to get into hockey.

4-0 out of 5 stars Flip on ESPN and pass me a beer
Like the author, I found myself engaged to a die-hard hockey fan. This book is a great place to start for the newly-initiated hockey girlfriend. It's a quick read, the author's racy innuendos give it a Girls' Night Out tone that's a lot more inviting and easier to relate to than other intro books. The stats and trivia are great, but will need to be updated eventually. Nice to see coverage of women's hockey, too.
PS - the bit about defensemen on page 19 is totally true ;).
