Product Description

In contemporary North America, figure skating ranks among the most 'feminine' of sports and few boys take it up for fear of being labelled effeminate or gay. Yet figure skating was once an exclusively male pastime - women did not skate in significant numbers until the late 1800s, at least a century after the founding of the first skating club. Only in the 1930s did figure skating begin to acquire its feminine image.

Artistic Impressions is the first history to trace figure skating's striking transformation from gentlemen's art to 'girls' sport.' With a focus on masculinity, Mary Louise Adams examines how skating's evolving gender identity has been reflected on the ice and in the media, looking at rules, technique, and style and at ongoing debates about the place of 'art' in sport. Uncovering the little known history of skating, Artistic Impressions shows how ideas about sport, gender, and sexuality have combined to limit the forms of physical expression available to men.

4-0 out of 5 stars Axels, salchows, and the Dutch Roll
My sister and niece both figure skate competitively, so I figured it was time to learn something about their sport."Ice Skating" by Dan Gutman is a good beginner's book with lots of memorable quotations, although even I know that his description of a `death spiral' is incorrect:

"The couple originated the `death spiral' spin---the one in which the lady is held by her legs [sic] and spun in a wide circle so her head nearly scrapes the ice."

This book was published in 1995 and contains short biographies and color pictures of some of the skaters (mostly but not entirely American) who were popular back then, including Michelle Kwan, Christopher Bowman, Scott Hamilton, Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean.

One of my favorite biographies is that of Dick Button, who is pictured as an earnest young man in a flying sit spin.I have always loved him for his acerbic commentary on the TV ice skating championships, but he was first and foremost a top skater, and the first American to win an Olympic gold medal in figure skating.(He also used to have a full head of hair!).I had always thought Button was famous for his spins, but he also introduced many new jumps, including the double salchow, the double loop, the double flip, the double lutz, the double axel, and the difficult triple axel (which some men still have problems performing, including the current world champion).

The author spins a sprightly history of ice skating (mainly figure skating), starting with the unfortunate Swiss skater who tumbled through a hole in the ice and drowned some time around 3000 B.C.This accident preserved for posterity the first primitive pair of bone skates ever discovered, although historians believe the people of Finland were actually the first to don skates.

"Ice Skating" is a quick, enjoyable read for those of us who would like to learn more about this graceful sport.

5-0 out of 5 stars Figure Skating Sensation
Gutman has written a clear, concise book about figure skating. It has biographies on today's skaters, skating history and wonderful photos (both black and color). It has lists of competitions and their winners. However, you may want to read something a little more recent. But it's still a great read!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother!
I got the feeling that this book was hastily put together to cash in on the popularity of figure skating. There is an unbelievable amount ofincorrect information!Don't waste your money on this one!My recommendation for a great book to give a child on the subject of skating is "Boitano's Edge".The information in this beautiful book is accurate, inspiring and fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good info.loaded with interesting facts & trivia .
Is just as informative to adults as adolescents as both an outstanding introduction and detailed insight into figure skating.Gutman has virtually every sentence count and wastes few, if any words, in this succinct book.Touches a little of everything only to fire your interest even more.Probably best for countless engaging facts and trivia.Difficult to imagine another book on skating where you can learn any more in the same number of pages.American translation: Lots of fun to read. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Almost has it all...
I really like the format and the progression from basic skating through advanced skills. The author tried to make it a comprehensive skating resource, but didn't quite make it. If you have some skating experience or have attended a hockey skating school, this book should catapault you to the next level of your game. The drills are excellent and after doing them for a few months, I noticed a HUGE change in my skating style and fluidity as well as my speed incresing.

If you're new to skating, I'd recommendtaking a hockey skating class at your local rink or at worst get the Laura Stamm book (bring with to the rink for practicing) or get your hands on the Robby Glantz "secrets of hockey speed" videos and "dry-land" train yourself while watching them. Those will show you in slow motion and real time on-ice foot and body positioning to make you an efficient skater as well as some advanced skating techniques.

Once you have skating down, you can go full-steam into this book as the descriptions make much more sense and the drills won't feel so uncomfortable. You should notice a change in your skating abilities in no time.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pales In Comparison To Laura Stamm's Power Skating
This book was extremely disappointing. I expected a book similar to Laura Stamm's Power Skating book, which I already own. However, this book was not even close to the quality of Stamm's book.

My biggest complaint about Cady's book is the lack of detail the author gives about each skating technique. The book is very short and only takes a couple of hours to read. Most of the techniques are covered in about 1 page of text. Then some tips are given, covering about 1/2 page. Then several pages of drills are given. So very little info is given on the actual mechanics of each skating technique. All the techniqes are discussed in a very general sort of way, and all the details which are essential to mastering the technique are missing. Furthermore, the techniques are very hard to visualize since no illustrations at all are provided - only general photographs in which it is hard to see what the author is emphasizing.

If you really want to improve your skating, I would highly recommend Power Skating by Laura Stamm and Herb Brooks. Stamm's book is a masterpiece and goes into great detail on each skating technique. Best of all, Stamm's techniques are very intuitive, so it is easy to apply when you actually go on the ice. Stamm's book is filled with illustrations and detailed photos so that you clearly understand each technique. As soon as I started applying the skills I learned in Stamm's book my entire game improved dramatically. I've been skating for 20 years, and this is by far the best book to teach you how to skate like a pro.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good fundamentals
Everyone who has played hockey knows that the most important aspect of the game is skating. This book and Laura Stamm's book on power skating are must reads for anyone seriously picking up hockey for the first time. Even players who have been slogging around the ice for some time will find his or her skating will improve after reading this book.

This book goes into step-by-step detail on forward stroking, backwards stroking, forward and backwards crossovers, hockey stops and transitions from forwards to backwards skating. If you read this book and practice hard you'll be the top player on your hockey team next season.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book I ever read
When I started hockey I wanted to be very good. After my first hockey season I got this book in Toronto. I used this book over the summer and now I'm one of the two fastest players on my team. This book concentrates on key points like good form and bad form. I would recommed this book for anyone who wants to be better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful for the first time skater.
As a first time hockey player this book made all the difference! The book is set up in such a way that you can progress at a good pace. The instruction on stopping was worth (to me) the cost of the book. As Iprogress the other drills will help all areas of ones skating. This book Iwould recommend without hesitation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I haven't read the edition pictured here,...
...but I did buy the first printing and have now re-read it about 3 or 4 times.I totally agree with all the reviewers here in that it is truly an unbiased and very un-sensationalized look into the world of figure skating.I especially loved the chapter that talked to several members of the judging community. If you are a fan of the sport or participate in the sport -- RUN, don't walk, to your computer and order this book ASAP.You will not be disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good read, but somewhat "nationalistic"
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as it covered topics, such as boot making and choreography, that are not often discussed in books about skating. However, its author, a Canadian, seems to have focused predominantly on theCanadian world of figure skating by frequently mentioning Canadian skaters, judges, choreographers, and coaches. It would have been nice to have had agreater "world" view of the topics discussed in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book for all figure skating fans
This book covers a variety of topics including the sacrificesmade for the skating child or children in the family, the importance of the proper fit in boots and the proper setting of the blades to the skaters, what a judge goes through to become a judge, what it is like to skate in an ice show and much more.I found this book so fascinating that I didn't want to put it down. This is a must have book for the library of all figure skating fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Can't Miss!
I wholeheartedly recommend Beverley Smith's "Talking Figure Skating." Smith goes behind the scenes, yet refrains from the bias and controversy that has surrounded Christine Brennan, author of "Inside Edge" and "Edge of Glory."

Beverley Smith clearly has a respect for figure skating and a love for the sport. This third book of hers is much more factually accurate than the first two and triply as interesting. It doesn't have pretty pictures like "Figure Skating: A Celebration" or "Talking Figure Skating," but the in-depth profiles are captivating to read.

If you only buy one figure skating book this year, make this it! I guarantee you won't be able to put it down!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lipinski, Kwan, Bobek, Lu, and More!!!
This book, unlike Tara Lipinski's and Michelle Kwan's autobiographies went behind just two or three skaters. This
showed the competition going into the 1998 olympics. The book
gave it's perdictions, and wasn't byist at all. This book also went behond what the skaters do on the ice.
This really gave insiders report. It was almost like reading a "People" magizine report--- it gave all
the details on all the skaters. I defainitly reccomend reading this book. ... Read more

Product Description
In this collection of lyrical essays, writer Jack Falla`s backyard hockey rink unexpectedly becomes a vital bridge to family and friends, a lens through which he looks at his life in a game he loves, a road leading back to the frozen ponds of a New England childhood and a mirror in which he stares down middle age. Or tries to. Essays in Home Ice range from a thoughtful, sometimes humorous account of Falla`s original attempts to build a rink - `The first law of Hydrodynamics as applied to rink owners: water seeking its own level fits in in your neighbor`s yard`- to a meeting with the world`s most famous backyard rink builder, Walter Gretzky, Wayne`s father. In other essays Falla skates with the ultimate pond skaters -hockey legends Wayne Gretzky and Paul Coffey, travels to Duluth, Minnesota and Thunder Bay Ontario to visit backyard rink builders, reflects on the death of a parent, the meaning of an early-morning skate with a grandchild, the connection between his 60-by-35 foot backyard rink and the magical Boston Garden, and the life lessons learned shoveling, resurfacing and skating with his wife, son, and daughter. A bonus chapter explains how to build your own backyard rink. Home Ice goes beyond being a sports book. It is a book for readers more interested in family, friends, and relationships than in last night`s hockey scores. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is why we love sports: Great stuff from the late Jack Falla
I wasn't a hockey player growing up.Basketball was my first love.My Dad put up a hoop in the driveway back in the early 70's, and the memories of playing 21, Horse, and three on three will last forever.Meeting neighbors and friends, playing by myself working on skills:those were the days.

And Falla's stories of his backyard rink inspire the same kind of love and committment to family and friends that my father's hoop did. What a wonderful book, made all the more important and influential by the author's passing away not too long ago.He was a wonderful writer who seemed to inspire many others through his life, teaching, and writing.

Thanks to Jack Falla...

5-0 out of 5 stars Home Ice
After reading the book I wanted to head right out and build the rink it was the spring thaw but I did clear out my back lot and leveled it got it ready for winter can't wait until the first freeze

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great One
I was geared up to read about the experiences the Fallas and their friends shared on the Bacon Street Omni. And Falla delivers the goods with humor and honesty, with wit and wisdom. But Home Ice, for me, has become more than a celebration of hockey and that which unites families and communities.

I, a relative newcomer to New England, didn't expect to learn so much about the Boston Bruins. I had heard of Orr and O'Reilly, of course, but I didn't grow up watching them as Falla did. He brings his memories of the Big Bad Bruins to life. Falla also mixes Black and Gold with the Oil. His skate with Wayne Gretzky enriches the book, giving it balance: the Great One juxtaposed to the average Joes who play on the pond.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Little Book
Even if you live in a climate that will never allow you to build a backyard rink, this wonderful little book should be read. In a age where youth sports are increasingly dominated by organization and structure and where the attraction of video games keeps kids inside on even the nicest of days, this book takes us to a place where play is unstructured, where one can lose themself in the early morning hours or under the stars, where family and friends can gather to play, skate and even sometimes compete, where the rituals of building, maintaining and disassembling the rink mark the passage of time.

Ultimately this book is as much about a family and a bond between them as is it about ice skating or hockey.Read, enjoy and take something away from the experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
A good easy read.A must have for hockey fans in New England and for builders of backyard hockey rinks. Not a big reader, but I couldn't put this on down.Very well written. ... Read more

Excerpt: Albert Dwayne Roloson (born October 12, 1969) is a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender currently playing for the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League (NHL). He has previously played for the Calgary Flames, Buffalo Sabres, Minnesota Wild, and Edmonton Oilers during his professional career. He is often affectionately referred to by his fans as "Roli", which is on his mask, or even "Roli, the Goalie". A Hobey Baker Award nominee and NCAA All-American while tending goal for University of Massachusetts Lowell, Roloson went undrafted after graduating. He was signed as a free agent by the Calgary Flames in 1994. After splitting time between the Flames and their American Hockey League counterpart, the Saint John Flames, he was traded to the Buffalo Sabres to back up Dominik Haek. Following two years with the Sabres' organization, he was picked up in the 2000 NHL Expansion Draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets. Rather than joining the Blue Jackets, Roloson signed with the AHL team of the St. Louis Blues, the Worcester IceCats. Deciding to give the NHL one more try, Roloson earned a roster spot with the Minnesota Wild in 2001. In the 200203 NHL season, Roloson shared netminding duties with Manny Fernandez as the Wild made their first ever appearance in the post-season, defeating the Colorado Avalanche in the first round and the Vancouver Canucks in the second round. Despite splitting goaltending duties with Fernandez, Roloson earned his first All-Star appearance at age 34, appearing in the 2004 NHL All-Star Game with the Western Conference team. He also won the Roger Crozier Saving Grace Award for having the NHL's best save percentage. During the 200405 NHL lockout, Roloson played with the SM-liiga's Lukko. He returned to the Wild onc... Product Description
It was the story that rocked the 2002 Winter Olympics and directed the world's gaze to figure skating.

Canadian champions Jamie Salé and David Pelletier finished second to Elena Berezhnaia and Anton Sikharulidze by the narrowest of margins in the Olympic figure skating pairs final. But a judge later admitted she'd been pressured to put the Russians first. Acknowledging a wrong had been done, the International Olympic Committee awarded a second gold medal to Salé and Pelletier: Their silver was upgraded to a second gold after an uproar, ensuing controversy, and an investigation revealed that indeed a judge had succumbed to pressure to vote for the Russian pair instead. The twosome's story has placed a spotlight on the sport and will result in an overhaul of the way it will be judged in the future.

Gold on Ice: The Salé and Pelletier Story features more than 60 stunning, full-color pictures documenting the skating pair's early lives, as well highlights from their controversial Olympic program.

Chapters include:
- The Early Days
- Two Solitudes
- Together at last
- The Olympic Games
- The Scandal Erupts
- Happy Ending.

Salé and Pelletier embody the true spirit of the Olympic ideal, and have established themselves as world-class athletes. They have thrilled audiences everywhere, and here for the first time is their story that is sure to inspire legions of fans and young skaters across the country and around the world. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice story of the Olympic champions
How nice for these skaters to be remembered in print for something other than one tough moment in their otherwise stellar careers - the Salt Lake Olympic Judging debacle. Smith gives a warm, intimate account of Sale and Pelletier, from their early training to their close personal relationship and other athletic triumphs.Recommend for fans of this pair, figure skating, and anyone who wants to learn more about this charming twosome and their REAL story....not just one moment.

4-0 out of 5 stars 2 Thumbs Up!!
This book has some great color photos of Jamie Salé and David Pelletier. It also has good detail on how they each got into the sport of figure skating. There were a couple problems that I had with the book:

1. The other did not write original captions for the pictures. They are exerps from the text.

2. The author wrote that Salé and Pelletier received scores of 5.7's and 5.8's from the judges for their long program. They actually received 5.8's and 5.9's.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Brightest and the Best
What a Love Story!Anyone who watched the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City couln't help but feel for this young couple who skated their hearts out only to have their Olympic gold snatched from them by judges with their own political agenda. We will always remember their tears of sadness, then their tears of happiness when it was decided they did deserve a gold medal around their necks! The fact that they are a couple in real life made the story even more sweet. This book, while short on words, is not short on pictures which makes it well worth the money. These are two young people who definately have their hearts in the right place and they deserve every good thing that comes their way! ... Their courage to persevere through personal tragedies will inspire readers to do likewise.

After visits to orthopedists and podiatrists resulting in months of frustration, Amanda White finally receives a diagnosis for the crippling pains in her wrists, knees, and feet. She must battle rheumatoid arthritis.

Shae Andrews is a teen in love with skating. She would like to be in the Olympics before going on to study mechanical engineering. But Shae is deaf. Choreographed movements on ice to music looms as a mountainous obstacle facing her.

Twenty-year-old Heather Johnson is a true advocate for people with disabilities. Heather has had unpredictable epileptic seizures ever since the sixth grade. Her doctor tells her she must not skate without a helmet. How can she enter competition?

All of these courageous young women you will meet in Skating Forward. There are many books on the market about persons who must deal with staggering life problems. But this book is unique because ALL of the women described are skating heroines who face situations which could easily crush most of us.

For sure, this is not a woman's book; nor is it just a series of memoirs about ice skating. Skating Forward will leave all readers--female and male--in awe because it is one single tale of the stubbornness and flexibility of the human spirit. It will help people that are seeking a beam of light at the end of what could be a darkened tunnel of deep despair.

Author Joanne Vassallo Jamrosz's book would be a fascinating read for high school and college students to study and discuss--particularly youth who feel life has treated them unjustly. The women in Skating Forward amend their lives and their spirits against all odds. You will not forget them.

4-0 out of 5 stars For fans of Scott Hamilton
I have been a Scott fan since before the '84 Olympics and I enjoyed reading this book. His positive outgoing personality shines on every page, while overall the book reveals a side of Scott the public never sees. His triumph against cancer is just one part of his inspirational and touching story.I hope he will write more about his life and continue skating now that he unretired.

2-0 out of 5 stars I wished Scott could be more forgiving!
I just couldn't read Scott Hamilton after I read what he wrote about Tonya Harding. It would have been nice if he could have forgiven her. After all, Tonya's stupid actions allowed him and others in the figure skating community who benefited from it with all the attention and opportunities to make them richer.

It's sad that we live in a country where Mike Tyson, a convicted rapist, is allowed to box again and be forgiven while Tonya Harding's stupid actions get her treated like a leper for the rest of her life. She can't skate anymore nor train hopeful skaters to compete neither. Oh well, I guess figure skating is only a sport for those who could afford to skate, train, and compete in the skating world. Maybe that's why I gave up on figure skating after 1994, I couldn't take the scorn aimed at one person, Tonya.

Scott blames her for ruining Josee Chouinard's poor performance in the 1994 games; Nancy's attack; and the circus that Tonya brought to the games. I'm sorry but it's time to let go and forgive and move on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Landing It: My Life On and Off the Ice
A very good story about Scott Hamiliton's Life.I have followed his career and his problems with cancer. He is a very dedicated & honest person.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Star Of the Ice Show.
You might think that Scott Hamilton led a charmed life in the world of ice skating. Not so, he had many setbacks; but his determination to show the world that he is somebody and his talent (plus hard work) let him enjoy comebacks and show his mettle.Overcoming many personal obstacles, he proved that no one could surpass him on the ice.

He was grateful to his adopted family and was able to provide vacations in Hawaii and fishing in Alaska.Always on the road as his continued search for excellence kept himstriving to improve his skills, using Denver as his home base, he was actually a 'Star on Ice,' an Olympic champion, and a friend to his competitors.

A few years ago, he put on a spectacular show (out on video) with his skater friends, along with my favorite singer providing the music. Not Buble, the other Michael! After the 1994 Olympics, I had become sated with too much t.v. coverage of figure skatingbut a dear friend, Eva Ezell, loved Scott and all the elaborate outfits the girl skaters came up with.Scott was honest in his presentations with no deceit; he was authentic. He was true blue and God saved him from an illness few would have endured. Some of us can rise above the pain.It takes a special person, and he truly is one.

4-0 out of 5 stars What a guy!!! :-)
I loved reading this book.I am a big ice-skating fan and have watched it since I was a kid.
The book starts off in chapter one talking about his cancer discovery already. You start to get a feel for who he is based on the way he handled the news of his illness etc. Then he talks about his childhood and the sacrifices his mom made to drive him for miles to get to competitions. He goes on to talk about his actuall career (and this is the reason for losing a star - because he talks too much about his routines and the types of jumps and the scores.Enough already, just let us learn about him).He even includes a chapter about Sergei Grinkov (one of my other favourite skaters who died tragically and unexpectedly on the ice) which is nice and moving.
Scott has a real upbeat personality and a very positive attitude which will take him a long way.He is a great guy and a brilliant skater and I enjoyed reading about him and his career (just not all the endless jumps).I recommend this to all skating fans and cancer patients looking for a bit of inspiration. It's really good. ...
