1-0 out of 5 stars Too many errors make this book a bad choice
My son borrowed this book at his school's library when he wrote a report about Iceland. I was dismayed to find numerous factual errors throughout the book including: Incorrect translations of Icelandic terms, incorrect gender names of characters, incorrect descriptions of food and incorrect descriptions of Christmas traditions and many more.
In fact the errors were so many that this book should be considered useless. It reads like something a mediocre high school student would put together the night before an essay deadline.

5-0 out of 5 stars makes iceland sound interestering
this book is in the best information book series about different countries, enchantment of the world second series.the book about iceland is one of the best, and just by opening the book for the first time it makes you interested in iceland aswell as making you want to go there.the best part is the first chapter where the author tells about an adolescent boy named thorri going through conformation to become part of the lutheran church.the good thing about the first chapter a typical icelandic teenager, his family and their customs and gives you a good picture of iceland.it also has good information about icelands dramatic landscape with it's glaciers and mountains(a lot of them are volcanos),and it's early history which you can find in the icelandic sagas, but i like that it shows how far iceland has come since then and how it's become.i also introduced me to njal's sagaand other sagas and i love that they mentioned bjork(how couldn't they).it realy made want to go iceland especialy reykjavik and learn more about iceland from other sources. ,jeremy david biggs "world traveler someday" ... Editorial Review

Product Description
The text of this book deals with the individual experience that any traveller undergoes when faced with the unfathomable, sheer enormity of Mount Askja in the centre of Iceland. Using this deeply inspirational experience as a starting point, Pall Skulason goes on to draw a range of conclusions concerning the position of humankind not only in nature and the universe, but also in the 'man-made' world, for example in an enormous city like Paris. Askja strikes the observer as an independent world, and opens new insights into our overall understanding of reality. As Skulason comments, 'A natural experience of this kind brings any human being back down to earth, and provides them with an invaluable connection with a form of reality upon which all modern human society - a society of consumerism, stress and complicated plans made in the name of the race for material value - eventually comes down to rest. There are inumerable forces at work in Askja; natural forces that could break loose at any moment and cause human beings untold damage.' It is experiences such as this that have drawn - and continue to draw - thousands of foreign travellers to Iceland. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
During the first half of the nineteenth century, infant morality in Iceland was considerably higher than in most other European counties. In fact, levels of infant mortality on this European periphery were comparable only with a few regions in central and northern Europe, all known for a tradition of artificial feeding of newborns or weaning in the first weeks of life.Iceland was not only unique for its high levels of infant mortality. The pace of decline, which came in the late nineteenth century, was even more striking. Thus, by the beginning of the twentieth century, infant survival in Iceland ranked among the best in the world. This book narrates the story of the struggle for improving survival chances for Icelandic children. It focuses mainly on the agents of change - most important of whom were the local midwives. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Iceland," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Iceland in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Iceland when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Iceland, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Product Description
Scholars of Old Icelandic generally agree that Icelandic literature was influenced by the Gaelic world where oral literature was highly developed and written prose sagas were produced in the vernacular. Ireland and Iceland are the only countries in North Western Europe where sagas of this kind were written down. The problem arises, however, when the importance of that influence on Icelandic culture has to be assessed. In this book, the author looks at the possible channels by which Gaelic influence could have reached Iceland and looks at the nature of the numerous parallels in different genres of Old Icelandic literature with Gaelic literature, in particular Old Irish. The intention is twofold: first, to provide a comprehensive bibliography of the subject, and second, to assess what these parallels can tell us about the importance of Gaelic influence for Icelandic literary tradition. 2nd revised edition, with a new preface and a new general introduction. ... Product Description
The outdoor pool plays a similar role in Iceland as does the cafe in France, the pub in England, the Mediterranean plaza or the Finnish sauna - it is a source of overall well-being and enjoyment. Good clean fun! An abundance of renewable resources has become one of the most significant characteristics of Iceland and harnessing hot water from the earth is the country's dominant form of energy use. Geothermal Living focuses on a partial aspect of geothermal use, the culture of public outdoor bathing. It is based on the author's life-long participation in the pool culture of Reykjavik and provides an exceptional insight into the cultural meaning of water. ... Read more
